What sort of epistemic status do the various claims of biology have?  What kinds of investigatory tools does biology employ and how are they evaluated epistemicly ? Beyond the methods and results of biology proper, philosophy of biology is interested in the relations between biology and other human inquiries.  One sort of question looks downward to more fundamental sciences and asks how biology related to physics and chemistry?  Another looks upward to the social sciences and the humanities and asks does biology have implications for such things as human social conduct and ethics? Our investigation of biology will look both at its history and its contemporary practice.  The reason for turning to its history is that many of the fundamental ideas that guide contemporary biology

http://fig.cox.miami.edu/Faculty/Dana/ether.html
ETHERBUN
...is an electronic mailing list devoted to care, health and behavior of domestic companion rabbits. The list is free of charge, and is a wealth of information, especially for the new rabbit "parent."
Almost all our participants are owned by companion rabbits, and a great number are seasoned rabbit rescuers who have a great deal of experience in dealing with the unique challenges our beloved rabbits pose.
Also, EtherBun is a good resource for those interested in learning more about rabbit medical care and general health. Presently, our subscribers include veterinarians, vet students, microbiologists, nutritionists, chemists, biologists and others whose areas of expertise are very helpful in getting to the root of a rabbit health problem.
Obviously, there is no substitute for taking your bunny to your rabbit- experienced veterinarian. But when an unusual problem rears its head, EtherBun folks put theirs together and can offer ideas and suggestions based on experience and a strong background in the sciences.
The list is "subscribers only," so if you post a question directly to the list, it will not appear unless you are subscribed to EtherBun.

http://my.erinet.com/~lebordo/PKD/
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Last Updated (see also LeBordo PKD Testing Results LeBordo Home Page About Our Cattery About Our Cats ... Our Affiliations Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic disease found in approximately one-third of all Persians (including Himalayans), Exotics, and to a lesser extent in other breeds and even in domestic cats. Unlike some, we won't try and tell you how you should react, but we do feel all breeders, and particularly Persian, Exotic, and Himalayan breeders (where the majority of PKD positive cats have been diagnosed to date) need to be knowledgeable about PKD in order to make informed decisions about the proper course for their own breeding programs. Please see our PKD FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for answers to many common questions regarding PKD. We completed testing all our breeders and show cats August 29, 1998. The results of those tests, including scanned images of all positive kidneys, are available here on our web site. From personal experience, PKD can lurk in even the healthiest appearing cat. According to available information, PKD doesn't show any symptoms unless and until the cat goes into renal failure. So the only way to know whether a cat has PKD is to ultrasound the kidneys. Regardless of how breeders use the information, we strongly believe all persian, himalayan and exotic breeders should test their cats. We have, and were surprised by the results . And its a key ingredient in making informed breeding decisions.

Administration Proposal to Serve Irradiated Beef to School Children Poses Cancer, Genetic and Other Risks
Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. 6apr01
CHICAGO The recent proposal by the Bush Administration to allow irradiated ground beef into the National School-Lunch Program will endanger the health of tens of millions of school children and should be withdrawn immediately. "The government's assertion that irradiated food is safe for human consumption does not even pass the laugh test," states Samuel S. Epstein, M.D., emeritus professor of environmental medicine at University of Illinois School of Public Health, Chicago. "Exposing America's school children to the hazards of irradiated food is reckless negligence, compounded by the absence of any warning to parents". Irradiated meat is a very different product than natural meat. This is hardly surprising as the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approved irradiation dosage of 450,000 rads is approximately 150 million times greater than that of a chest x-ray. Apart from high levels of benzene, new chemicals known as "unique radiolytic products" were identified in irradiated meat in U.S. Army tests in 1977 and recognized as carcinogenic. Later tests identified other chemicals shown to induce genetic toxicity. In sharp contrast to FDA's claims of safety, based on grossly inadequate testing which fails to meet the agency's minimal standards and which were explicitly rebutted by its own expert committees, there is well-documented scientific evidence that eating irradiated meat poses grave risks of cancer and genetic damage. Irradiated meat is also highly susceptible to cross-contamination with food poisoning bacteria.

What are Electronic Mailing Lists?
Electronic mailing lists provide forums for Internet users to participate in discussions or receive information on thousands of topics. The software responsible for the management and distribution of these mailing lists to thousands of subscribers are commonly called "list servers". A list server automatically distributes an e-mail message from one member of a list to all other members on that list. However, not all list servers are the same. There are different varieties of list server software that allow a user to create and manage mailing lists. Digests, electronic journals, announcements, and discussion groups are some of the types of content that are delivered through the thousands of lists available on the Internet. When you subscribe to a list, your name and e-mail address is automatically added to the list. You will receive a standard letter of welcome (via e-mail) telling you about the list. From that time on, you will receive all mail (postings) sent to the list by its members. You may follow the discussions or join in on them. If you respond, you can send your response to the list (in which case, all members of the list will receive it), or to an individual on the list. You can signoff (unsubscribe) from a list at any time. You can also get a listing of all the members of a list and their e-mail addresses.
