Studio Art

Art
A hallmark of the studio art program has been its focus on a broad liberal arts experience and its small classes that enable each student to receive individualized guidance. Foundation courses serve as an introduction to two- dimensional and three- dimensional thinking. Intermediate- and upper- level courses stress more advanced and comprehensive work in drawing, painting, design, printmaking, computer/ multimedia, and photography. The computer is a critical component in the visual arts and the studio curriculum acknowledges that it will become one of the key means of forming connections between disciplines. The studio curriculum encourages experimentation and explorations of all media to prepare students for a future as a visual artist. The flexibility of the advanced program provides the student with endless potential for exciting and stimulating study. On the undergraduate level, three degrees are available. The department offers a comprehensive B. A. degree in studio art, or students can pursue the studio art B. A. with an emphasis in graphic design/ photography. The B. A. in art is a more general degree option that combines art history and studio art. Students interested in art education can pursue an undergraduate program of study leading to teacher certification. Developed with the School of Education, this program provides students with extensive studio training and a strong foundation in aesthetics and art history. It is a five- year program, with the last two years involving courses in education and student teaching. Students graduate with a very competitive dual degree in studio art and secondary education.

An Undergraduate Course, University of Virginia
Spring Semester 1998
Benjamin Caleb Ray Course Description: Each student will design an exhibition of African art for presentation on the World Wide Web, incorporating the results of the student's study of African art. The exhibitions will contain an introductory explanation of the exhibit's theme, a map of Africa locating the societies whose art objects are represented, images of selected African art objects, relevant field-context images, descriptive labels, and other explanatory textual materials. The images students will use are taken from collections at the Bayly Museum of the University of Virginia , the Fowler Museum of Cultural History , the Hampton University Museum Monday and Wednesday classes will be devoted to illustrated lectures on African art; Friday computer lab sessions will be used for computer instruction, digital image processing, and Web page construction. The course includes the following curricular components: a brief history of African art studies; African ritual and cosmology; analysis of African art exhibition catalogues; library research on selected art objects; the exhibition of African art in museum contexts; training in Web skills and image processing. The special challenge of the course is to create exhibitions of African art that attempt to be true to the objects themselves while placing images of them in a cultural environment of educational value to the exhibitor and the viewer alike.

Virtual Catalogue for Art History (VKK) General Information Deutsch Francais Italiano The "Virtueller Katalog Kunstgeschichte (VKK)" / "Virtual Catalogue for Art History" is a specialized search engine based on the technology of the well known KVK (Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog). It is an initiative of a working group of German art libraries, formerly known as the AKB (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunstbibliotheken). The working group is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, or German Research Foundation). The VKK has been accessible since September 1999 and is still "under construction." Currently the participating libraries offer well over 2 million bibliographic records including many articles and reviews from periodicals and collections. The VKK’s primary aim is to be a gateway to the holdings, and above all to the bibliographic data, offered by the working group’s art libraries. Together, these holdings form a virtual national art library, since the libraries in question coordinate their acquisition policies according to their different specializations. Under the general national acquisition policy of lending libraries (SSG), the two German university libraries belonging to the working group are responsible for art history; their acquisition policies are coordinated accordingly by the DFG.

Department Policy
The Ph.D. Program in Art History at The Graduate Center (GC) of The City University of New York (CUNY) is dedicated to the development of scholars, teachers, museum personnel, art critics, and other professionals, specializing in the history of modern and contemporary art and architecture, both European and American, as well as art criticism and theory; Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture; and African, Oceanic, Native American, and Pre-Columbian art and architecture; while providing students with a full general background in the history of art. Students in the Program are prepared to serve their discipline and their communities in all areas of cultural endeavor in which these areas of specialization may play a strong and meaningful role. Back to top Structure of the Program
The Doctoral Faculty consists of professors drawn from the GC and from each of the CUNY senior colleges substantially participating in the program. The faculty's specializations cover the Program's major fields of concentration: European art from ca. 1300 to the present, American art, and also African, Oceanic, Native American, and Pre-Columbian art. Courses in these major fields, in addition to courses focusing on earlier periods of the history of art, are given at the GC. Other courses covering the broad spectrum of the history of art are given at the senior colleges in their master's programs. Schedules for the courses of the GSUC and the senior colleges such as Hunter, Queens, City, and Brooklyn are available in late May (for the fall semester) and in January (for the spring semester) from the Assistant Program Officer.

Art History: Japan and Its Contacts With the West
Japan and the West: a continuing dialogue
Ileana B. Leavens . Seattle Central Community College The following is a syllabus for an art history course dealing with Japan and its contacts with the West to be given in spring 1996. Introduction: In art history survey books Japan, like China, Africa and India among other countries is considered as a separate entity from the west. In reality this is not correct, since Japan had direct contacts with Europe since mid 16th century and indirect contacts with it through China and the Silk Road. It is the purpose of this course to deal with Japan's connections with the European countries from mid 16th century to 1945; to indicate what contributions were provided by Europe and those given by Japan. The picture that emerges, especially during the l9th century is one of mutual interactions, which provide an excellent example of what has been called as transculturation. Transculturation at the present time is a worldwide phenomenon. It is hoped that by presenting this topic in relation to Japan and its contacts with the West, we can provide a model for the understanding of present day interactions.
