When searching for birth, marriage, death and divorce documents you should start with the your most recent ancestors . It may seem futile to request records when you already know the facts, but what you think is true may actually be an incorrect assumption. Vital records may also include little nuggets of information that will either corroborate your work or lead you in new directions. It may also be tempting to start your vital records search at the beginning with the birth record, but you should actually consider looking for a

Genealogical Searches What is a genealogical search? A genealogical search is generally what someone does to find out more about their family tree. Vital Statistics is often used as a research resource. When using the Vital Statistics records it is important to understand a few facts.
  • Vital Statistics only has the records for birth, marriage, death and stillbirth registrations that were registered and occurred in Alberta. Vital Statistics have Alberta birth records dating from approximately 1850 to present and Alberta marriage and death records dating from approximately 1890 to present. An individual requesting a genealogical search should ask for a photocopy of a registration, as this document carries the most information of any document that is produced through Vital Statistics. New York State Vital Records (except New York City)
The New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records provides birth and marriage records from 1881, death records from 1880 and divorce records from 1963. Divorce records are maintained for the entire state, including the five boroughs of New York City. New York State Vital Records does not maintain records filed in Albany, Buffalo or Yonkers prior to 1914. New York State does file birth records for Queens and Richmond counties for the years 1881 through 1897. Anyone may obtain records of births that occurred at least 75 years ago and records of marriages and deaths that occurred at least 50 years ago. Access to more recent records is restricted to immediate family members with proof of identity. The Department of Health adds index information only once a year.
Genealogical Records
The Bureau of Vital Records requires that requests for genealogical recordsrecords for family history purposes, not needing certification for legal purposesbe submitted by mail, or you may obtain forms and submit genealogical requests at the Department of Health's Satellite Office in Menands (800 North Pearl Street, 2nd Floor). Submitting requests at the Satellite Office saves time. You cannot save time by mailing genealogical requests by faster than ordinary mail. Applications may also be dropped off in the New York State Archives reading room reception area on the 3rd floor of the Cultural Education Center.

Vital Records
Overview
Vital records document births, marriages and deaths. They are maintained by governmental agencies and are used as primary sources in genealogical research. The researcher should be aware that recording, particularly of births and deaths, was very incomplete. Although Wisconsin law required counties to register these events since 1852, only a limited number were actually recorded by the counties before 30 September 1907.
Search Strategies
Vital records were maintained at the state and/or county level. The Society owns state level vital records. The researcher should also check the appropriate county courthouse for possible additional birth, marriage and death records. One of the most important details about a birth, marriage or death record is the informant. This person varies and, therefore, the accuracy of the information varies. A parent may give the information on their child's birth record. A bride or groom will usually provide the information for the marriage record and the widow or nearest family member may give information on a death record. It is also possible for non-related persons to give information on any and all of these types of records. Many records will provide the name of the informant toward the bottom of the form.
What the Society Owns
Pre-1907
The Society Library holds microfilm of the births, marriages, and deaths recorded in Wisconsin at the state level before October 1, 1907. These records on microfilm are arranged by county and by date of registration. They are not filmed by the date of the event. Therefore, it is necessary to use the indexes first.
