Once research has reached the point of entry into Canada, ships' passenger lists provide extremely valuable genealogical information such as names of people in the party, ages, sex, occupations, destination and sometimes the origin of the immigrant.
In order to make effective use of these lists it is necessary to know the approximate date of arrival in Canada, otherwise research may prove too time consuming.
Although the keeping of regular passenger lists began in 1855 in Canada, with the passing of the British "Passenger Act", some earlier records are available. An Index Reel C-4252 covers the period 1817-31, but is by no means a complete list and consists only of names drawn from the correspondence of the British Secretary of State.
For the period 1855-65 exact records are very scarce. Probably the best course is to write to the Public Archives of Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa K1A 0N3, including as much relevant information as possible.
However, from 1865 for the Port of Quebec and 1881 for Halifax, records are complete. These were the two official ports of immigration to Canada and it was not until later that other ports became official:

Passenger Lists before 1865 Passenger Lists 1865-1935 Border Entry Records Immigration Records after 1935 ... Other immigration web sites and databases If you do not know the approximate year when your ancestor arrived in Canada , we suggest you search other records for clues. For example, the 1901 census returns indicate year of arrival for those people who were not born in Canada. If your ancestor homesteaded in the Western provinces, the date on the homestead application may assist you in narrowing the period of arrival. If an ancestor lived in a city, his or her name might be found in the annual city directories, which list the names of adults with their occupations and addresses. For example, if your ancestor's name first appears in the directory in 1910, it is possible that he or she arrived in 1909. City directories can be found in public libraries and also at the National Library of Canada . Another source is provincial death records , which sometimes indicate how many years the deceased had resided in Canada.

Introduction: This is a listing of indexes to passenger arrival records (also called immigration records or ship manifests) in the United States from 1820 to the 1940s, including microfilm, CD-Roms, books and online indexes. If you find your ancestor(s) listed in any of these sources you should then always consult the original passenger lists. Microfilm copies of the passenger lists themselves and the microfilmed indexes listed here are available from the National Archives (NARA) and some of its branches. They can also be ordered for viewing (for a small fee) at a Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the links marked "FHL" will take you to webpages with Family History Library microfilm roll numbers. Some public libraries (especially genealogy libraries) may also carry these items.
If you already know the exact date and port of arrival for your immigrant ancestor then you do not need to use these indexes. Instead visit this webpage to learn how to find the passenger lists themselves.

What You'll Learn from Passenger Lists
by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG Printer-friendly version What Did Passenger Lists Record? Did you know that passenger lists weren't required by federal law until 1820? Expert Myra Vanderpool Gormley goes over the three major time frames for passenger lists and what kinds of information you're likely to find within each. To be sure there is nothing quite like finding your ancestor on a ship passenger list. But be prepared to do some serious digging. There are three major time frames important to researching American ship passenger lists. They are: 1891-1954, 1820-1890 and pre-1820. The two major repositories for these microfilmed records are the National Archives and the LDS (Mormon) Family History Library (FHL). If your ancestors arrived between 1891 and 1954, Immigration Passenger Lists are valuable. Immigrants were asked to provide information such as:
    • Marital status
    • Last residence
    • Final destination in the U.S.

    Finding Naturalization Records
    Introduction
All Americans, except those descended entirely from Native Americans, descended from people who migrated to this continent within the past 500 years. This means that, at some time, all serious genealogists will need to use immigration and naturalization records. It is important for you to have worked on your genealogy enough to get back to the immigrant ancestor. In order to properly search immigration records, you will need a name (the fuller the better), a list of possible alternative spellings, an idea of the time the person arrived in this country, and an idea of where they lived in the country of origin. It is especially helpful to know through which port or coast they entered the U.S. If relatives or family records do not provide enough information to allow you to use the immigration records, the following sources may help. Obituaries and county histories often list a person's country, region or town of origin, and an arrival date. Birth and marriage records often give the birthplaces of a child's parents or of the couple being married.

    Ocean arrivals 1919 to 1924
NOTE: If you are going to use these records, we suggest that you print off a copy of this page for reference.
    About the Records:
From 1 June 1921 to 31 December 1924, the Department of Immigration and Colonization required that individual manifests (Form 30A) be completed and submitted to the immigration officers at the ports of arrival, instead of the large sheet passenger manifests previously in use. A form had to be submitted for each passenger, including children, except those in transit to the United States. The use of Form 30A was discontinued as of 1 January 1925. From that date, the use of large sheet manifests was reinstated. Each Form 30A usually included the following details: name of ship, date of sailing, port and date of arrival, name, age, occupation, birthplace, race, citizenship, religion, previous residence in Canada, destination, nearest relative in the country from which the immigrant came. Note that in the earlier version of Form 30A used in 1919, the names of accompanying dependents were usually included with the head-of-household, not on separate forms.
    Form 30A: Dmytro Zmendak, 1923
