Finding Maps and Atlases in The Map Collection A s the Library of Michigan's maps and atlases are located throughout the building, you should consult ANSWER , the Library's online catalog system, to find exact locations. Because some of the maps and atlases are not on ANSWER, please ask a librarian for further assistance. Our bound collections of maps illustrate places, themes or subjects. Oversized volumes usually are located on the bottom shelves, beneath the regular-sized materials with similar call numbers. The easiest way to locate maps on ANSWER , by subject is to enter the place name or subject, followed by the word maps Examples:
ingham county mich maps michigan maps china maps cemeteries michigan maps atlases
Unless otherwise noted in ANSWER , maps and atlases do not circulate. Many maps and atlases are too large to photocopy. Please check ANSWER , or ask a librarian to see if the materials also are available on microform for copying. Below is a list of the Library of Michigan's nine collections where you can find major types of maps and atlases. They are arranged by series titles or broad categories, with notes as to their locations and their core call numbers. Also consult

County and Town Street atlases Modern maps from motoring atlases covering thewhole country, via street atlases for individual counties, down to street maps
http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/maps/ordnancesurvey.htm
Maps of Hertfordshire Ordnance Survey Maps Ordnance Survey maps were originally drawn up by military surveyors, in the first half of the 19th century, to cover the whole country with a uniform mapping and there is no intention of attempting to describe the history, or the very wide range of generalist and specialist maps that have been produced over the last two centuries, except to say that the modern mapping is fully digitised, and that virtually all modern road and street maps are derived from the data. Instead I will concentrate on the maps which are readily accessible and useful to the family historian. First Edition 1 inch maps : These have been reprinted and are at a scale of 1 inch to the mile. The original survey was engraved on copper plates and major changes - such as the building of railways - were added later. Rural areas are usually much as the original survey. The scale is too small to show individual fields or smaller buildings.
The above shows the kind of detail available on the 1880 maps
(from A Short History of Bernards Heath Large scale maps from circa 1880 : The 6 inch to the mile maps have been digitised and are available online from old-maps - who will sell you a map centred on the area of interest to you. This shows individual woods and fields and even buildings, and for a larger farm it should be possible to identify a number of buildings. It should be noted that for most rural districts there would have been very little change over the preceding centuries, except where open fields had been enclosed.

Joan House

Genealogy Forum Every genealogist needs an atlas for everyday reference. In fact, it would be difficult to keep up with the news without one if you weren't working on genealogy. To be even more efficient it would be very useful to have a series of atlases going back as far in the recent era as they can be obtained. An 1800s atlas in a bookstore would be a very lucky find and well worth getting. Since all of the North American population originally came from the Old World we have the potential of at least starting our family history by recounting the word of mouth origin stories that have been passed down to us. Names of places change from time to time, so we may have to make some assumptions if we see a different name in the place where great-great-great-grandfather came from. This may seem like it's getting awfully involved, but it is ordinary in the biographies of families that are in many genealogy libraries. Atlases often are part of sets of encyclopedias. Those sets used to be sold by door to door salesmen and were sold by the thousands. Almost every estate sale includes them. Before atlases there were maps, these also going far back. With the maps or atlases we could trace a family group from one end of a continent to the other end. A while back, I made some outline maps of the United States and traced the pioneer trails of an ancestral line on each one then put them in each group's notebook.
