Interested in Mennonite Genealogy? Do your Mennonite roots trace to Russia and Prussia? Do the names, Neumann, Gaede, Bergen, Regehr, Loewen, and Heidebrecht sound familiar to you? How about names like, Chorengel, Suydam, or Bay? Hopefully this site will be able to help you in finding resources for your search. Something usually happens in a family for someone to become interested in genealogy. For me it was the death of a great aunt that I knew nothing about. My love of genealogy has just grown with "leaps and bounds". When I make a discovery I am flying so high. I love to share the information with my family members and hope they receive as much joy from this as I do. I dedicate this site to my family members as well as other genealogist out on the front lines continuing their quests on a daily basis. Once you begin your quest you will find yourself addicted beyond belief. I check my mailbox daily hoping new information has arrived. The contacts I have made online have been invaluable. I have met distant cousins in far away lands and enjoy the continuing contact.

THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND
The UK and Ireland are regarded, for the purposes of this Genealogical Information Service, as being made up of England Ireland (i.e. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland Wales , and Scotland , together with the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man . Together, these constitute the British Isles - which is a geographical term for a group of islands lying off the north-west coast of mainland Europe. (Legally, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are largely self governing, and are not part of the United Kingdom.) The Administrative Regions into which the UK and Ireland are divided have changed frequently in recent years. However, in line with normal genealogical practice, this Information Service is structured according to the counties as shown in these maps of England, Scotland and Wales , and of Ireland , i.e., as they were prior to the re-organisation that took place in 1974 (1975 for Scotland).

1890 Special Veterans Census
A lucky break for some researchers trying to trace ancestors through the 20 year period between 1880 and 1900, a special Veterans census was taken in 1890 along with the regualar census . Since the 1890 census was all but completely destroyed in a fire in January 1921 at the Commerce Building in Washington D.C., this 1890 Veteran's schedule is an alternative means of documenting veterans or widows of veterans from the Civil War and War of 1812 who were still living and collecting pensions in 1890. The special census schedule still exists only for the states of Kentucky - Wyoming (the first group of states alphabetically appear to have been destroyed), and documents only Union veterans since the U.S. government obviously had little interest in keeping track of Confederate soldiers.

I) Notes
  • All following pages are in German, but most of the text is addresses and literature citations; most of the common German terms are listed and translated below
  • All cited phone numbers are representing the "within Germany" form, dialing from abroad requires to drop the leading and adding the national area code for Germany (probably 0049) (Example: 01234-456789 -> +49-1234-456789)
  • All cited locations, administration districts and countries are representing the German spelling
II) Common German Terms
  • Bundesland -> land of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • Regierungsbezirk -> primary administrative division of a "Bundesland" - something like a district
  • Landkreis -> administrative division of a "Regierungsbezirk" - something like a county
  • kreisfreie Stadt -> town with the administrative rank of a "Landkreis"
  • Hauptstaatsarchiv, Landeshauptarchiv
