Finding a resting place for your research
GENEALOGY E-mail: Click her e Archive By DONNA MURRAY ALLEN Published May 20, 2004 We've all seen "the look." The mere mention of your latest research caper causes eyes to glaze over. But rooters can deal with disinterest from the unknowing. What we can't face, though, is the possibility that the documents we have laboriously collected will end up in a landfill. If you can't guilt someone into promising to store your work, you have other options. Historical and genealogy societies and public libraries, especially those where most of your ancestors lived, are potential recipients. Many don't have room to store personal papers, but a few do. The special collections department of a university library may make room if your work pertains to that locale. Consider scanning documents, charts and photos onto a CD. Relatives and repositories are more apt to hang on to CDs because they take up little space and are easy to duplicate.

SOCIETIES
Kentucky has many societies that have been organized according to peoples’ interests. Genealogical, historical, and lineage societies are especially helpful to genealogists because of the records and resources they collect, transcribe, and publish. Some societies now have Internet sites. Societies include: Lineage societies (the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution [DAR], Colonial Dames, and Sons of the American Revolution, for example) require members to prove they are descended from a certain group of people such as colonists or soldiers. The applications for membership in these societies are usually preserved and occasionally published. National lineage societies such as the DAR have a large Kentucky membership. These are described in the “Societies” section of the United States Research Outline (30972). The Kentucky DAR is located at:
