Creek County in east-central Oklahoma was created at statehood [1907]. Intended to be named Moman County in honor of the mother of Moman Pruiett, the name was changed at the last moment by the Constitutional Convention; in the alphabetical list of counties in the copy of the constitution, Creek County appears following Mayes County. Named for the Creek Nation. The word is from the term "Ochese Creek Indians," used by the early British settlers.

Murray County, Georgia
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Georgia Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Georgia, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web pages.

WELCOME TO MILTON COUNTY, GEORGIA
Last updated June 06, 2004
My name is Edna Strickland (ednab@mindspring.com) and I have been the person responsible for the Gagenweb Milton County page for several years. I have enjoyed hosting this web page.
However, I am not interested in the politics involved in administering the Gagenweb, so I will be combining my page with the Old Milton County History and Genealogy Page. The reconstructed website will be up shortly.
Information from other contributors will remain on this page. I'm afraid I don't have email addresses for the contributors. If any of you would like to have your information removed from my new page, just email me.(ednab@mindspring.com).
HISTORY OF MILTON COUNTY
Milton County was named for John Milton, Georgia's first secretary of State. He was credited with saving the official records of Georgia when the British occupied the state. Some of his descendants were General Homer V. Milton of the 1812 war, Governor John Milton of the state of Florida, General William H. Milton of the Confederate Army, and Mrs. William Y. Atkinson, wife of the Governor Of Georgia. Thanks to W.S. Bates for this information. Milton County was formed in 1857 from parts of Cherokee, Forsyth and Cobb Counties. Portions of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties were annexed in 1859. The county seat was Alpharetta.

Houston ["H-o-w-s-t-o-n"] County was named for John Houstoun, son of Sir Patrick Houston, one of the companions of Oglethorpe. Before the Treaty of Indian Spring on 8 January 1821, Georgia's jurisdiction extended only to the Ocmulgee River. Beyond, to the west, was Indian country in possession of the Creeks . On that day, the Creek tribes ceded their lands lying between the Ocmulgee and Flint rivers to Georgia. On 15 May 1821, an act of the General Assembly was approved and provided that the lands acquired be divided into 5 counties: Henry, Fayette,Monroe, Houston, and Dooly. Houston County's eastern boundary was the Ocmulgee; it's western, the Flint River. It extended to the north to a line commencing on the Ocmulgee river opposite Fort Hawkins (now the city of Macon), and to the south to another line commencing on the Ocmulgee opposite the town of Hartford. On 21 December 1821, an act was approved and passed by the General Assembly of Georgia to organize the five counties. For Houston County, the following individuals were appointed commissioners for the superintending of an election of five Justices of the Inferior Court: Turner EVERETT, Daniel CORNWALL, Nathaniel MCCALL, John KEENER, Thomas HARVEY, Washington ROGERS, and Eli NUNN. The Inferior Court would organize the new county and set in motion its machinery. The five Justices of this Inferior Court were Kinchen CURL, John MATHIS, Davenport LAWSON, Newdaygate OUSLEY, and Daniel W. MANN.

About White County Genealogical-Historical Society The White County Genealogical-Historical Society was organized at a meeting on Thursday October 7, 1993. The purpose of this society shall be to bring together those people interested in their family genealogy and the history of White County. Understanding the history of our community is basic to our democratic way of life, gives us a better understanding of our state and nation, and promotes a better appreciation of our American heritage. The society's functions will be to discover and collect any material which may help to establish or illustrate the genealogies and history of the area: its exploration, settlement, development, and activities in peace and in war; it's progress in population, wealth, education, arts, science, agriculture, manufacturing, trade and transportation. It will collect printed material such as histories, genealogies, biographies, descriptions, gazetteers, directories, newspapers, pamphlets, catalogs, circulars, handbills, programs, and posters; manuscript material such as letters, diaries, journals, memoranda, reminiscences, rosters, service records, account books, charts, surveys, and field books; and museum material such as pictures, photographs, paintings, portraits, scenes, aboriginal relics, and material objects illustrative of life, conditions, events, and activities of the past and the present.
