It obtained registration with the Charity Commission in February 1998. The founding members and the Charity Commission agreed that the charity's objectives are to advance education into gender identity and intersex issues. GIRES therefore:
    Initiates, promotes and supports research particularly to address the needs of those in whom there is a strong and ongoing desire to live and be accepted in the gender, although it be different to that assigned at birth, in which they identify;
    Publishes the outcome of such research and other relevant information in order to inform interested parties and the general public;
    Enables the public to achieve a wider understanding of these issues and thereby provide equal treatment within society of those whom they affect.

    The Disparate Classification of Gender and Sexual Orientation in American Psychiatry
    Katherine K. Wilson, Gender Identity Center of Colorado, Inc., Denver, Colorado, U.S.A. Abstract In 1973, the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association voted to delete homosexuality as a mental disorder from the seventh printing of the second edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM-II. Twenty-three years later, the inclusion of diagnostic categories for Gender Identity Disorder and Transvestic Fetishism in the fourth edition of the DSM continues to raise questions of consistency. In this paper, issues of gender identity and sexual orientation are compared in light of current definitions of mental disorder. Introduction Although human sexual orientation and gender identification represent distinct phenomena and are considered largely orthogonal, they are intricately intertwined in medical theory and social consequence. Since Magnus Hirschfeld (1910) coined the term "transvestite," studies have revealed that most gays and lesbians do not crossdress and most crossdressers are heterosexual. Nonetheless, sexual orientation and gender identity share many common elements pursuant to the definition of mental illness, including theories of etiology, social stigma, cross-cultural occurrence, and perceptions of distress, disability, and disadvantage. These parallel elements raise questions of consistency in light of the deletion of homosexuality as a mental disorder from the seventh printing of the second edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM-II, in 1973. If homosexuality and transgender identity or expression were classified as mental disorders for essentially the same reasons, then it remains unclear how those reasons uphold the continued inclusion of diagnostic categories for Gender Identity Disorder and Transvestic Fetishism in the DSM-IV today.

    GAIN: Gender in Africa Information Network
    "two small pieces of wood separated will not burn but put together they will blaze up." GAIN aims to: facilitate communication, discussion and information sharing between organisations and people interested in gender and women's issues in Africa. As a network, GAIN is committed to making indigenous information on women and gender valued, visible and accessible globally and participate in the global information society in order to promote gender justice and women's rights in Africa. GAIN seeks to:
    • link people across Africa working in the field of gender information
    • act as a platform to share news, information and issues
    • facilitate the training of members in the use of new technologies
    • assist organisations in the disseminating publications
    • facilitate resource sharing and partnerships
    What is GAIN: GAIN is a network of participants with no formal membership. However, people are welcome to join the GAIN listerv as 'members' and to complete a standard application form so that the secretariat has a database of participants. The network encourages participation of not only documentalists, but activists, researchers, journalists etc who have an interest and commitment to gender related issues in Africa and the dissemination of information. At present participation is limited to those working and living in Africa. Background: In March 1997, The African Gender Institute hosted a pan-African workshop for librarians and documentalists who work with gender related material in Africa. Twenty participants met in Cape Town for five days and through a participatory process aimed at maximum participation, discussed and debated issues of collective concern. The overall goal was: to work towards sustainable and appropriate communicative mechanisms for documentation centres and libraries committed to the collection, management and dissemination of information on gender in Africa. with Transgender Parents
    Why COLAGE is committed to serving people with transgender parents:
    We feel that the issues affecting kids with gay, lesbian, bi, and transgender parents, stem from our parents not conforming to "normal" gender roles. We all have issues about "coming out", our own identity, school-based harassment, and so on. As with kids with bisexual parents, the issues are too similar to ignore. We won't change our name (we like the acronym!), but our mission includes transgender families. Interview of a teenager with a transgender parent (from our newsletter).
    Definitions:
    (there are no commonly agreed upon definitions for many of these terms, but here's a general idea). We're always trying to improve our explanations, please contact COLAGE with suggestions .
    Transgender: a blanket term often used to describe everyone who does not conform to the social roles that their biological sex is supposed to play. This is independent of sexual orientation.
    Transsexual : Someone who feels that their biological sex does not match their psychological gender. Usually a transsexual is living as the preferred sex, and will, or has had operations to change some of the physical aspects of their sex. Transsexuals can be straight, gay, or bi.

    The 2002 addendum
    In order to meet the needs of students in today's world, access to technologies must be equally available to all students. Accessibility to technologies in schools involve complex and vast issues. Several components to accessibility issues exist, but these issues fall into the following major categories: gender bias and gender gap accessibility to all regardless of social, economical, or educational status, funding issues hearing disabilities visual disabilities , and other disability issues There is a gap between male and female interest and access to computers and the Internet. Access is not available to all students in part because of socio-economic issues and funding for technologies. Students with impairments have additional challenges, needs and access concerns that also must be met. Addressing these issues and finding ways to equalize access are the first steps to providing access to all. gender bias accessibility funding hearing disability ... other disabilities Other white papers dealing with similiar topics can be found at:

    Geo counter: For an accurate geo counter reading add to the number at the right: D evoted to information on transsexualism, concerns couples experience when one is gender variant, and issues transsexual parents face when raising children The Short Bio: Linda is a former male to female transsexual who transitioned in the early 1990's. Linda had GRS (Gender Reassignment Surgery) in Montreal in January 1997 after a life long struggle with Gender Dysphoria. The term "former transsexual" is used as Linda is no longer in transition nor undergoing any on-going gender related processes. Linda is simply living life as the woman she is in a slightly variant form of the traditional family.
    Linda has been married to Jeri since 1982. Jeri and Linda are too much in love to split up over a little thing like surgery for Gender Correction (after all we are hopeless romantics). Linda and Jeri have since joined the minority ranks of persons who are legally married same-sex couples in the United States.
    Our main focus is on family, as our three children grow up in this non-traditional alternative family. Our goal is to raise our children to be educated, well rounded but also devoid of the prejudices from our past. As we continue our gender journey our children, as well as ourselves, are learning acceptance and the beauty of the differences that lie in the diversity of people. Beauty that flows far beyond the limitation of gender.
