http://www.tradeshop.com/gems/enhance.html
Gem Enhancements
M any gemstones are altered to enhance their appearance. This may be done to produce colors not usually found in nature, to improve color, to improve clarity, to reduce porosity and stabilize color (by preventing absorption of discoloring oils and other substances), or to enhance durability. Depending on the stone and the treatment, such alteration may be easy or impossible to detect. It is unethical and unlawful to sell any artificially enhanced gems without full disclosure of information about the treatment. Unfortunately, full disclosure seems to be the exception rather than the rule in the marketplace. Here are a few examples of some of the methods frequently used: heat treatment irradiation impregnation, assembled stones
Heat treatment
M any gems are routinely heated under controlled conditions to improve color (aquamarine, sapphire, ruby, tourmaline), alter color (sapphire, amethyst to citrine, topaz, zircon), or improve clarity (sapphire, ruby). Since natural heating also occurs (e.g., in volcanic areas), the artificial effects are sometimes indistinguishable from natural effects. In most cases, the results of heat treatment are permanent. http://www.tradeshop.com/gems/invest.html
Are Gems Good Investments?
W ell, in the opinion of this gemcutter/Graduate Gemologist , there are two correct answers to this question:
  • No . If you think you can buy any gemstone today and sell it in a year or five years or ten years and make a profit on it, you are probably going to lose money. If you do not have sufficient savings and more normal investments, speculating in gemstones or other collectibles is not for you. The gem market poses several major problems for the small investor/speculator. First, when you buy a stone, it can be difficult to know exactly what you are buying, as there are many clever gem substitutes and enhancements , many of which are difficult to detect, even for experts. Grading and pricing of gemstones are also difficult and require considerable experience and training. Then, when you try to sell a stone, it is often very difficult to find a buyer. The gemstone market is highly illiquid when compared to the financial markets, commodities, or even real estate. When everyone is looking to buy low and sell high, the spread between bid and ask prices is usually very high. Jewelers often sell stones for 2-3 (or more!) times their cost, but they are unlikely to buy stones from the general public for more than half their normal wholesale cost (i.e., they may buy a stone at a regular wholesale cost of $100, sell it at retail for $200-300, but only buy it back from an individual for $50). If you can find a retail buyer, they will be very unwilling to pay a normal retail price and will want to pay wholesale prices. Clearly, buying at retail prices and selling at wholesale prices is not going to make you any money.

These marvels of the mineral kingdom should never reach the lapi dary's wheel. However, the preponderance of gem rough must be fashioned to reveal its full beauty. Minerals have been shaped by man since the beginning of the Old Stone Age a million years ago. This early working was not to give symmetry to objects of adornment but to make tools and weapons. Significant Points:
    • About one-fourth of all jewelers were self-employed. Jewelers usually learn their trade in vocational or technical schools, through distance-learning centers, or on the job. Prospects for new jewelers should be excellent; many employers have difficulty finding and retaining workers with the right skills to replace those who retire or who leave the occupation for other reasons.
Nature of the Work About this section To Top
Jewelers and precious stone and metal workers use a variety of common and specialized handtools and equipment to design and manufacture new pieces of jewelry; cut, set, and polish gem stones; and repair or adjust rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and other jewelry. Jewelers usually specialize in one or more of these areas and may work for large jewelry-manufacturing firms, for small retail jewelry shops, or as owners of their own businesses. Regardless of the type of work done or the work setting, jewelers require a high degree of skill, precision, and attention to detail. Some jewelers design or make their own jewelry. Following their own designs or those created by designers or customers, they begin by shaping the metal or by carving wax to make a model for casting the metal. The individual parts then are soldered together, and the jeweler may mount a diamond or other gem or may engrave a design into the metal. Others do finishing work, such as setting stones, polishing, or engraving. Typical repair work includes enlarging or reducing ring sizes, resetting stones, and replacing broken clasps and mountings.

    Asking the right questions
is the key to knowing what you are getting when it comes to buying gemstones. It is also the only way you can be sure what you are comparing when considering gems from different jewelers. Be sure the jeweler can answer your questions, or can get the answers for you. Then, be sure the jeweler is willing to put the answers in writing on your bill of sale. Finally verify the facts, double check that the stone is as represented, by having it examined by a qualified gemologist-appraiser.
Diamond Basics , the factors used to determine the quality and value of a diamond are referred to as the "Four C's". In terms of their effect on the value of a diamond, in order of importance, we would list them as follows: -1. Color (body color), -2. Clarity (degree of flawlessness), -3. Cutting and proportions (often called the make), -4. Carat weight.

    http://www.africagems.com/articles/gemgemology1.html
At the 1997 Tucson AGTA show, one of the authors (CYW) saw some unusual tourmalines that were reportedly from recent workings in Zambia. Marc Sarosi Co., of Los Angeles, was marketing this material as "mixed-color" tourmaline: Colors available include light to medium toned desaturated pink, orange, green, and yellowish green, as well as colorless, and individual fashioned stones frequently contain regions of two or more of these colors. Coincidentally, we found that the chemistry of these tourmalines was unusual, with elevated contents of Bismuth(Bi). Location and Access
The multi colored tourmalines described in this report were found in a field in the Kalungabeba area of the Lundazi district, according to Mr. Sarosi, who visited the site in early 1997. The stones were originally discovered by a person who was digging a hole for an outhouse. A rough dirt road leads to this site from Lundazi; it is best traveled by four-wheeled drive vehicle. During the rainy season, from about late December until March, the area is often inaccessible. Mining and Production
The Kalungabeba deposit is alluvial, and the tourmaline-bearing gravel also contains spessartine, aquamarine, and dispersed quartz. At the time of Mr. Sarosi's visit, there were no known gem-bearing pegmatites in the immediate vicinity of this field, although Mr. Sarosi reports that subsequent mining has unearthed spessartine garnet-bearing pegmatites.

What is a gem? A gem is something which has Beauty, Durability, Rarity, and Value A butterfly's wing has beauty, rarity, and value, but no durability. A fine Opal may have the same colors and beauty. It has rarity and value and is relatively durable (if not abused), so it is considered a gem. Gems can be classified as Organic and Inorganic . Most gemstones are inorganic. Rubies, Sapphires, Topazes, etc., form as crystals of minerals and are inorganic. Some "gem materials", however, are formed organically. Pearls, Coral, Amber, Jet, Ivory, and Shell, are all organic gem materials. We also have some gem materials that were organic, but come to us as mineralized fossils. Ammolite, and Opalized bone are examples of this. It is important to know the difference between Natural, Treated, Synthetic
