Things don't turn up in this world until somebody turns them up. Poverty is uncomfortable; but nine times out of ten the best thing that can happen to a young man is to be tossed overboard and compelled to sink or swim. If the power to do hard work is not talent, it is the best possible substitute for it. A pound of pluck is worth a ton of luck.

The Presidency (True Books, Government) What I Learned Section 1 Answer the Following Questions:
1. In May, 1787, how many delegates met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the Constitutional Convention?

Fifty-five. George Washington was a delegate to and the President of the Constitutional Convention. Other famous delegates were Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. The Constitutional Convention lasted four months in the sweltering heat of a Philadelphia summer. Inside the State House, the discussions were also heated. The delegates engaged in many disagreements and compromises before a final agreement was reached. On September 17, 1787, the plan for the new government was signed by thirty-nine of the remaining forty-two delegates. It was called the Constitution of the United States. The Constitution was ratified in 1788. Did you know Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution? Ratify means to accept. Top of Page 2. The White House Web Page on James A. Garfield is a good place to start. You've probably heard about the 20 Year Jinx when it comes to the assassination of presidents. Garfield was no exception to this curse. The web page James Abram Garfield offers a brief overview of his career and assassination. The facts of the shooting on this site seem to be more consistant with the real story than other pages. For further information on the death of President Garfield, check out: Panati's Extraordinary Endings of Practically Everything and Everybody by Charles Panati (1989, Harper and Row, Publishers). Oops! by Paul Kirchner (1996, Rhino Records). If you have some spare time, go to your local library and read the newspaper articles related to this subject starting on July 3, 1881. They are quite fascinating, although typically found on microfilm.
How Alexander Graham Bell helped kill the President. James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States may have been shot by a would-be assassin, but he was actually killed by his great team of doctors. Don't try to figure out what Garfield did as President that was so memorable - there was very little. In fact, most Americans barely recognize his name.

Pros

The house is impressive; Guides are knowledgeable; Museum is informative Cons Can only walk through designated parts of the house- the rest is roped off The Bottom Line This is an interesting piece of the National Park System that honors one of America's least- known presidents Full Review Many American Presidents are honored by the National Park Service of the United States. The birthplaces of such noteworthy chief executives as Lincoln, Washington, Kennedy, T. Roosevelt, and others are preserved as National Historic Sites, monuments, memorials, etc. Each one offers some insight into the man who reached the highest office in the land, displaying articles, books, and important presidential belongings, explaining his contributions to the United States and the world. Some units of the National Park Service, however, honor presidents that were not very popular or who did not really have the opportunity to build a strong presidential legacy. An example of the latter is President James Garfield. He was president for one of the shortest tenures of any U.S. chief executive serving just over 6 months, his life cut short by an assassin's bullet. At James Garfield National Historic Site, the National Park Service has preserved Garfield's estate along with some important letters, books, and other items that shaped the life of America's 20th president.
