James Garfield - 20th President of the United States
Portrait of James A. Garfield (National Archives) James Abram Garfield (November 19, 1831-September 19, 1881) was the 20th Presidentof the United States, the first left-handed President, and the second U.S. President to be assassinated. He was born in Orange, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, southeast of Cleveland. He was named for his older brother James Ballou Garfield, who died in infancy, and his father, Abram Garfield. His father died in 1833, when James Abram was 18 months old, and he grew up cared for by his mother and an uncle. From 1851-1854 he attended the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later named Hiram College) in Hiram, Ohio. He then transferred to Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, from which he graduated in 1856, as an outstanding student who enjoyed all subjects except chemistry. He then taught at the Eclectic Institute. He was an instructor in classical languages for the 1856-1857 year, and was made president of the Institute from 1857 to 1860.

JAMES GARFIELD 20th President of the United States Born in a log cabin to poor, uneducated parents, James Garfield went on to be a scholar, a Civil War hero, a U.S. congressman for eighteen years and, eventually, President of the United States. Unfortunately, Garfield's rags-to-riches story came to an abrupt end when a disgruntled Republican supporter, Charles Guiteau, shot Garfield twice on July 2, 1881. Garfield lingered on through the summer and died in Elberon, New Jersey on September 19, 1881. His vice president, Chester A. Arthur , was sworn in as president at 2 a. m. on September 20, 1881.
Extra credit : It is said that Garfield used to amuse friends by simultaneously writing Latin with one hand and Greek with the other.

Garfield was the only man in U.S. history who was a congressman, senator-elect, and a president-elect at the same time. He campaigned for the presidency from the front porch of his house. His mother, Eliza Ballou Garfield, was the first mother of a president to live in the executive mansion. Lincoln's son, Robert Todd, was Garfield's secretary of war. Served as president in 1881 James Abram Garfield (1831-1881), was the last president to be born in a log cabin. Nobody knows what kind of president he would have been because he was assassinated only a few months after taking office. Garfield, a Republican, was the fourth president to die in office and the second to be assassinated.
Possibly Garfield accomplished more by his death than if he had lived to complete his term. A major characteristic of national politics in his day was the so-called spoils system, in which thousands of government employees were fired every time a new president took office. Garfield spent most of his short time as president filling these jobs with his political supporters.
Although not a reformer, he wrote in his diary shortly before he was shot: "Some civil service reform will come by necessity after the wearisome years of wasted presidents have paved the way for it." The assassination of Garfield by a disappointed job-seeker shocked the nation into action. Two years later, Congress began civil service reform with the Pendleton Civil Service Act.
His character
Garfield was a big, athletic, handsome man with blond hair and beard. Before becoming president, he was successful as professor, college president, Civil War general, and U.S. congressman. He spoke and wrote well, read widely, and even composed poetry. He occasionally entertained his friends by writing Greek with one hand and at the same time writing Latin with the other. Warmhearted and genial, Garfield wanted to be well liked and generally was. But his eagerness to please everyone sometimes led him into questionable dealings with unscrupulous people.

Name: James Garfield (1831 - 1881) Categories: President of the USA US Congressman from Ohio Burial Location: Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. See the Death in Office Rule for Presidential Monuments Mike's Notes: Arriving at the James Garfield Monument, I found that the doors to the interior of the mausoleum were locked. Being the inquisitive type that I am, I went to the cemetery office and asked them if the doors are ever unlocked. The lady said that the mausoleum was closed for the winter. Since it was mid-March, I asked her when winter was going to be over. She said that they would be opening the doors the following Monday (I believe this was Thursday that I was there). I told the lady that I was only there for one day, and I didn't know when I would get back to see the inside again. Her sarcastic answer: "Well, I'll tell Mr. Garfield you stopped by." So, if you're ever in Cleveland and decide to visit Lake View Cemetery, give the office staff a hard time for me! Webmaster's Note: Since adding this grave, I have been in contact with the community relations director at Lakeview Cemetery. She has been very kind and helpful, as well as apologetic to me for the actions of their wayward staff member. So, not being one to harbor hard feelings, I rescind my request that people give the office staff a hard time!

Inaugural Address of President James A. Garfield Friday, March 4, 1881 Fellow-Citizens:
WE stand to-day upon an eminence which overlooks a hundred years of
national life—a century crowded with perils, but crowned with the triumphs
of liberty and law. Before continuing the onward march let us pause on this
height for a moment to strengthen our faith and renew our hope by a glance
at the pathway along which our people have traveled.
It is now three days more than a hundred years since the adoption of the
first written constitution of the United States—the Articles of
Confederation and Perpetual Union. The new Republic was then beset with
danger on every hand. It had not conquered a place in the family of nations.
The decisive battle of the war for independence, whose centennial anniversary will soon be gratefully celebrated at Yorktown, had not yet been

His Presidency: The Republican party was divided between the Stalwarts, who backed President Grant and the Half-Breeds, who supported Senator Blaine. When Garfield was elected with Senator Blaine's support, he made enemies by giving Half-Breeds important government jobs. After six months in office, he was shot by a Stalwart and died from blood poisoning.

  • Through a compromise with the British over a northern border, Polk managed to gain the territory which now make up Washington and Oregon. This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

For only the second time in our country's history, the son of a former president has himself been elected president. Is there something in the presidential gene pool that propels the sons of chief executives into the political fray? Or is it just the learning experiences, connections, and family name that give them an advantage? More of the latter than the former, probably, but surprisingly few presidential "sons of fortune" toss their hat into the political ring. Of almost 90 boys born to presidents, we've found only 18 that have held political office. (The list below may not be complete, but should be pretty close!
