"ague"
For six weeks when he was 15, Garfield drove horses along the narrow towpaths running beside the Ohio canal network. After falling into the water for literally the 14th time, Garfield developed fever, chills, exhaustion, and became bedridden for weeks. This illness was diagnosed as an "ague," which was then a term applied generically to any malaria-like illness. He was treated with large doses of calomel, a chloride of mercury with cathartic properties. At that time it was the standard treatment for any fever. [
bad cold
Garfield had a bad cold in 1851 that was treated by a homeopathic practitioner, Alpheus Morrill, with "cold cloths applied to the chest and infinitesimal doses of medicine." [
anal fissure
Garfield developed a painful anal fissure in 1875 that kept him in bed for several weeks. Ultimately, John Shaw Billings (later the Surgeon General of the US Army, and the architect of the Johns Hopkins Hospital) operated on him. [

James A. Garfield As the last of the log cabin Presidents, James A. Garfield attacked political corruption and won back for the Presidency a measure of prestige it had lost during the Reconstruction period. He was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. Fatherless at two, he later drove canal boat teams, somehow earning enough money for an education. He was graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1856, and he returned to the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute (later Hiram College) in Ohio as a classics professor. Within a year he was made its president. Garfield was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1859 as a Republican. During the secession crisis, he advocated coercing the seceding states back into the Union.

Garfield: From fervent lay-minister to president of the United States On March 4, 1850, an eighteen year old student committed his life to Jesus Christ. Baptized in the icy waters of the Chagrin River by the Disciples of Christ, he took his faith seriously and immediately began sharing it with others. Because of his warm personality, he found many opportunities to do so and soon added preaching to carpentry and teaching as skills he practiced.

The newly published book by William Dunham entitled The Mathematical Universe , contains an intriguing story about U.S. President James A. Garfield the same Garfield who was assassinated in 1881 by networks, according to historian Anton Chaitkin, that were controlled by the British Monarchy. Garfield, Dunham reveals, was the author of a unique proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. This, obviously, was back in the days when U.S. political leaders still admired a classical education. How far are we now from the oratory of an Abraham Lincoln, or from the inspired crusade for classical education in free, public schools by a Thaddeus Stevens! And how unusual for a U.S. president and Congressman to be involved in geometrical constructions! But perhaps this story further fills in the picture of why such a political leadership was considered a threat to the British aristocracy who had just seen their support for the Confederacy go up in flames. Dunham's book, which is arranged to present different discoveries and personalities in the history of mathematics "from A to Z", includes under the letter "H", the chapter "Hypotenuse", in which he discusses 3 different proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. These include the "Chinese Proof" embodied in the
