“Civilizations that get too far from the land are bound to decay.” –J.I. Rodale Hello, my name is Tim Beckman and welcome to my Square Foot Gardening Page. I have been gardening since about 1988 and gardening in my current location of Indianapolis, Indiana (USDA Zone 5) since 1994.
Current Picture of My Garden (Updated 6/6/2004)
WHAT IS SQUARE FOOT GARDENING?
Square Foot Gardening is a technique of intensive planting developed by a retired civil engineer, Mel Bartholomew, in the 1970's. Mel describes the technique in his book, Square Foot Gardening as "a system of laying out, planting, and maintaining a productive, attractive garden in any amount of space. The garden is based on a grid of 1-foot by 1-foot squares, with single seeds or plants placed in carefully determined spacings." Mel goes on to say, "The square foot system lets you make the most of your garden space to conserve the amount of water, soil conditioners, and labor needed to produce a maximum amount of food in that space. A square foot garden takes only one-fifth the space and work of a conventional single-row garden to produce the same harvest." 145. Vegetable Gardening In Containers
Offers tips and techniques, including variety selection, planting information, and common problems. From the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.
http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/container/container.html
Vegetable Gardening In Containers
Sam Cotner, Extension Horticulturist
If your vegetable gardening is limited by insufficient space or an unsuitable area, consider the possibility of raising fresh, nutritious, homegrown vegetables in containers. A window sill, a patio, a balcony or a doorstep will provide sufficient space for a productive mini-garden. Problems with soil-borne diseases, nematodes or poor soil conditions can be easily overcome by switching to a container garden.
Crop Selection Almost any vegetable that will grow in a typical backyard garden will also do well as a container-grown plant. Vegetables which are ideally suited for growing in containers include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, green onions, beans, lettuce, squash, radishes and parsley. Pole beans and cucumbers also do well in this type of garden, but they do require considerably more space because of their vining growth habit. Variety selection is of extreme importance. Most varieties that will do well when planted in a yard garden will also do well in containers. Some varieties of selected vegetables which are ideally suited for these mini-gardens are indicated in Table 1.

The History of Gardening: A Timeline
From Ancient Times to 1600
35,000 BCE (BCE = Before the Common Era or Christian-Roman Era)
Evidence from archeological sites (tools, corprolites) indicates that Homo Sapiens at the end of the Paleolithic period
had knowledge of many plants dervied from food gathering techniques. Different kids of fruits, nuts, and roots were
only gathered , not cultivated. 15,000 BCE
"The history of the origin of human civilizations and agriculture is, of course, much older than the documentation in the form of pyramids, inscriptions and bas-reliefs or tombs can tell us. A close acquaintance with cultivated plants and with the multitude of types and their differentiation into geographical groups as well as their frequently sharp physiological isolation from each other compel us to refer the very origin of cultivated plants to such remote epochs, where periods of 5-10,000 years such as concern archeologists represent but a brief moment."

Our World Wide Web pages give you a flavour of what to expect from a visit, tell you about our programmes of activities and lectures, report the work of the Tradescant Trust, and provide links to other Internet sites and sources of interest. Our churchyard contains a recreation of a 17th century knot garden and the graves of many famous people, including six and a half Archbishops of Canterbury, the mother of Queen Anne Boleyn, Captain Bligh of the Bounty, Elias Ashmole, founder of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and several members of the Tradescant family - the 17th century plant hunters who provide the connection and inspiration for the Museum.
