April 16, 2004, Hour Two: Evolution, the Galapagos, and the “Tooth and Claw” Play Program Summary Guests Books/Articles Related Links and Resources ... SFKC Home Program Summary In 1995, at the Charles Darwin Scientific Research Center in the Galapagos, local fishermen staged a strike to protest limits on fishing imposed by the Ecuadorian government. At the center of the conflict was Chantal Blanton, an American woman, who was the director of the Charles Darwin Research Station. As the story broke about the battle between fishermen and conservationists, a playwright living a continent away was listening to the radio and got an idea. Inspired by real-life events—the conflict between scientists’ work, conservationists’ work and the troubles they got into when they began placing restrictions on the fishermen’s activities—Ira’s guest Michael Hollinger wrote “Tooth and Claw” a new play that opened recently at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York. What happens when priorities conflict—when economics clash with environmental ideals? Ira and his guest talk about Darwin, drama, evolution, conservation, and the environment and how art and life inspire each other.

Galapagos Islands: Overview The Galapagos Islands are located 600 miles west of Ecuador and offer some of the most spectacular wildlife found anywhere in the world. Nowhere else on this planet will you find penguins which live on the equator (The Galapagos Penguin) or iguanas which swim and feed in the ocean (The Marine Iguanas)! Because these islands have only recently been invaded by man, the literally 1000s of animals that inhabit these islands have never learned to fear us. This means that you can literally walk right up to hundreds of blue-footed boobie birds, red-footed boobie birds, masked boobie birds, albatrosses, penguins, land iguanas, marine iguanas, lava lizards, sea lions, fur seals, red-chested frigate birds, flamingos, finches, tropic birds, lava gulls, giant tortoises, and flightless cormorants. The marine life which inhabits the waters that surround the Galapagos Islands is just as fantastic as the wildlife found on shore making Galapagos one of the premier dive destination in the world. The sheer abundance of life is amazing. On most dives you will see several hundred large marine animals. On any given dive it is not uncommon to see sea lions, turtles, hammerhead sharks, white tip sharks, manta rays, Galapagos sharks, and huge schools of eagle and/or golden Rays, sometimes numbering between 50 -100 individuals. There is also the possibility of seeing whales, whale sharks, thousands of dolphins and large schools of hammerheads, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. Between dives you can snorkel with penguins or sea lions.

New Years 2004/5
E CUADOR Ecuador's 13 million citizens live in four distinct geographic regions: the Andean highlands, the coast tropical plains, the rainforest and the Galapagos Islands. Covering 109, 484 sq. miles, Ecuador contains some of the most varied geography in South America. Quito and the central highlands are on or near the equator, with altitudes of between 7,000 and 10,000 feet. (2,100 and 3,000 m).
In the highlands, the weather is surprisingly comfortable year round. The driest months in this region are July and October. The time that we recommend travellers to visit Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands is during the winter months when our winters are bitter and cold!
Listed below are just some of the many tours that we can offer our clients. If you have a particular interest (ie. trekking or birding) please consult us for details.

Research Summary
Over the past 50 years biological invasions have increasingly been recognized as one of the greatest threats to intact ecosystems and to human security. In spite of this concern and a growing body of evidence that it is justified, many fundamental questions remain unresolved.
The Galapagos Islands' simplified ecosystems provide a unique opportunity to research fundamental questions of invasion ecology. A single species, Psidium guajava , has invaded several islands, each to varying degrees over the past hundred years and each of which possesses a characteristic flora and vegetation zonation which further facilitates such a study.
This research has the following objectives:
1) develop and analyse a comprehensive dataset of invasive vascular plant species for the Galapagos Islands and determine the extent to which it conforms to or refutes existing models describing plant invasiveness;

97. Adventure In Ecuador
Location, geography , Climate. Made famous by Charles Darwin, the GalapagosIslands are no less enthralling now than they were a hundred years ago.
http://www.geographia.com/ecuador/ecuad02.htm
Adventure in Ecuador Ecuador Homepage Latin America Homepage The World Geographically, Ecuador can be divided into three primary regions: the Coastal Lowlands, the Central Highlands, and the Eastern Rainforest Basin.
The Coastal Lowlands Guayaquil Located at the mouth of the Guayas River, this coastal city has always been the largest and most liberal-minded in Ecuador. Its fiercely independent and progressive populace has at times rebelled against the government in Quito. Today, it is a city of 2 million, and some historians explain that the reason Guayaquil is not the nation's capital is because the Spanish found Quito easier to control. Guayaquil's history of trading dates back thousands of years, and its markets are still a big attraction. People come from all over Ecuador to hawk their goods here, and bargains abound. The Central Highlands The most dramatic geographical feature of Ecuador is its central highlands. Here, a soaring stretch of the Andes splits into two local ranges, demarcating a magnificent central valley. The German explorer Humbolt aptly dubbed this valley the Avenue of the Volcanoes, for along it range most of Ecuador's 51 volcanic peaks, 21 of which are presently active. Many wear snowy crowns all year round. The highest peak is Chimborazo, rising 6,310 meters. At the northern end of the valley is Ecuador's capital city
