BIOGEOGRAPHY There are a number of ways to distinguish bird species, the most common being morphology. Beaks, scales on legs, jaw muscles, syrinx, feather tracts, etc. all work to some degree. Physiological aspects also work - blood serum proteins, hemoglobin, and bile salts have all been used as taxonomic characters. Behavioral characteristics are sometimes used: hopping vs. walking, dust bathing, nest building, song, etc genealogical affinity . Penguins and Auks look similar but they are only distantly related - they look similar due to evolutionary convergence ; that is, they are adapted similarly because they do similar things in similar habitats, not necessarily because they are related. DNA hybridization is useful because it applies across the entire class of birds and is objective and measurable and not subject to interpretation. Double-stranded DNA consists of two strands with complimentary nucleotide sequences that can be separated by heating. If two single strands from single species are recombined, they reassociate at different strengths, depending on the number of matching base pairs. Again they are separated by heating. The more heat it takes to separate these hybrid pairs of DNA strands, the more base pairs were matched, and the more closely the species are related. As a general rule, for every 1 degree C temperature lower than the dissociation temperature of single-species DNA, there is a 1% difference between the nucleotide sequences.

Geography 530: Island Geography Seminar
Among the many reasons why islands are an interesting subject for geographers to study: Measured by its areal extent on the surface of the Earth, Polynesia is arguably the largest nation. (Note that the ethnically-defined nation of Polynesia includes several political states and territories of France, Great Britain, U.S.A., etc.). The South and North islands of New Zealand, both ranking among the 20 largest islands on Earth, were never occupied by human beings until approximately 1,000 years ago. During the late Pleistocene, the Mediterranean island of Malta was the home of an endemic species of dwarf elephant that stood about three feet tall, as well as an endemic species of “giant dormouse” that was the size of a large rabbit. This course title falls under the Geography Department’s intermittent offerings in “Advanced Topics in Physical Geography.” However, as at least two of the three geographical bullet points listed above suggest, human geography must play an important role in understanding island environments and ecosystems. Regardless of their background in physical geography, ecology, and biogeography, all motivated students should be able to succeed in this class because the study of islands encourages emphases across such a wide range of disciplines.

An Introduction to Ecuador
By Mike Yaeger and Matt Lepkowski Related Articles Descending into the Quito airport, one sees a sprawling city sitting in a deep valley surrounded by white stucco houses cascading down the mountainsides. The stench of scorched land fills the air, mingling with the smell of exhaust from the many diesel-burning buses that flood the streets of the Capitol City. Quito is a city that blends the rich traditions of it's European and Indian architecture, culture and relaxed way of life, with a constant striving to break into the modern age of business and commerce. It is a city characterized by old churches next to glass office towers, modern banks with crumbling sidewalks, and rich mixture of people living by the old traditions and others firmly entrenched in the new world. Quito represents a country in the midst of change, attempting to preserve the old, yet take advantage of the new.
Geography of Ecuador
These diverse habitats create a country that offers much to the visiting tourist. There are very high active volcanoes to climb, such as Mount Cotopaxi, sitting at almost 20,000 feet. There are lush tropical rainforests, some virgin and some not, providing adventures into a vanishing lifestyle and ecosphere. There is a long coastline providing small fishing villages, ecoresorts, untouched beaches, and the Galapagos Islands.

W ELCOME to G ALAPAGOS G EOLOGY ON THE W EB . For those interested in natural history, there are few places quite as facinating as the Galapagos. The intention of this web site is to provide information on the Galapagos Islands to both scientists and non-scientists alike. Charles Darwin was the first geologist to explore the Galapagos. He made many important observations of Galapagos geology and drew conclusions that remain valid today. Darwin was also fascinated by the remarkable and unique biota of the islands. His careful biological observations later led him to propose a theory, that of natural selection , that revolutionized the way scientists think of life. While the emphasis of this web site is on geology, we too have found Galapagos wildlife difficult to ignore, so you will find many images and observations on biology, as well as geology, on this site. We hope you enjoy your visit.
