Culture
Gabonese are almost exclusively of Bantu descent but are subdivided into ten large ethnic groups. The largest of these is the Fang, who hail primarily from the north and north-east. The Mb©d© (which also includes the T©k© and the Mb©t©) are from the southeast, and the Eshira from the southwestern areas. Most of the coastal areas are the province of the My©n© people. On paper, somewhere between 65% and 75% of the population are true to the one holy apostolic church, but traditional religions and animism remain strong influences. Consequently Catholicism in Gabon is more a matter of regional sensibilities than papal bull. About 1% of the population are Muslim, an extraordinarily low number for an African country Although French is the official lingua franca, over half the population also speak the African language of Fang. You will also hear Bapunu spoken in the south, and Bandgabi in the east and south, around Franceville. Gabon is particularly noted for its woodcarvings and masks. The former gave visiting missionaries palpitations when they first set eyes on them, and the exquisite but sensual forms of the statues, with their emphasis on the fleshy tones of the human body, does suggest an earthiness at odds with Protestant and Catholic chastity. It's little wonder that they were banned as pagan idols by these buttoned-down proselytisers.

Gabon With a vast sprawl of virgin rainforests and teeming wildlife, Gabon is The Ghost Who Walks territory. Its major cities, however, are a sophisticated bustle of glitz, lights, and casinos. Gabon offers a little of everything to just about everyone. It's not high on the list of most travellers' itinerary because visas come tied in a mile of red tape and day-to-day expenses, especially in Libreville, are mind-blowingly expensive. But if you can overcome these drawbacks Gabon is worth a visit. The combination of Texan-tea money and French influence has unfortunately all but destroyed traditional Gabonese culture, but it's still worth passing through if you're taking the western coastal route north or south. Inland it's a different story; despite its wealth, Gabon's roads are not in the best of conditions and once you get off the main roads and railways, getting around is a hard slog. Gabon - Culture Overview
Gabon is a country of dense tropical forests astride the equator. Its original inhabitants were pygmies and other forest peoples but many other African groups subsequently settled there. Contact with European navies and traders has also shaped Gabonese culture. The capital, Libreville, was established as a base for freed slaves just before the colonization of the entire territory by the French. Though Gabon is now independent, its people value their ties with France more than many other former colonies. However, French influence over education, religion, and finance is much more pronounced in the coastal cities that have benefited from Gabon's oil boom than in the interior villages where half of the people live.
French is the country's official language, but the Gabonese speak about 40 native dialectsall of which fall within the Bantu language category. The largest ethnic group is the Fang who reside principally in the north. Other areas are home to the Myene-Mpongwe, Bateke, Babamba, Bakota, Okande, Bandzabi, and Pygmy peoples. Some 65% of the people are Roman Catholic. Protestants and animists make up the remainder except for a very small percentage of Islamists, whose influence is bolstered because a long-time president of the country is Muslim.

The forests of Gabon may rival those of South America. They house 8,000 plant species with an endemism rate possibly as high as 20%, and almost 200 mammal species and 600 bird species. Much of the traditional African culture has disappeared under the onslaught of oil money and French influence. Gabon is a haven of prosperity and stability in equatorial Africa. Gabon was discovered by the Portuguese in 1470 and began to attract French traders around 1840. It became a French colony in the second half of the nineteenth century, and integrated into French Equatorial Africa. Libreville is an industrialized city and is also the center of education for Gabon. It is the site of universities, libraries and research institutes. Lambaréné’s biggest attraction is the Albert Schweitzer Hospital about 8 km from town. Manganese mining centers are located in Moanda.

Gabon Time and Date Gabon Culture Back to Top A great deal of the cultural life of Gabon continues to be derived from or influenced by France. Gabon's contemporary writers express themselves almost exclusively in French. At the same time, there has been continued interest in the precolonial history and traditions of Gabon's peoples. Examples are the research on the Fang epic (mvet) and the art of the Mpongwe, Fang, and Kota. In 1983 the International Centre for Bantu Civilizations (Centre International des Civilisations Bantu; CICIBA) was created, with its headquarters at Libreville. Gabon has newspapers in French, national and provincial radio stations broadcasting in French and local languages, and television broadcasting from Libreville that can be received as far away as Lambaréné. French publications circulate extensively, and television programs are relayed from France.

"It's Africa's Eco Capital. Living in this successful West African country,
I soon grew to love its people and lifestyle.." by Muguette Goufrani A s part of my decade living on Africa's West Coast, our family spent a memorable year in the Republic of Gabon, which hugs the Atlantic, straddles the equator and is roughly the size of France. Being health fanatics and outdoor types, my mother Suzanne, brother Jean Pierre and I thrived in the hot, humid climate - and in 12 months, managed to visit much of the countryside. This gave us an intimate connection with the Gabonaise culture and was valuable in my future career in tourism. We enjoyed a laid back, tropical lifestyle; food was delicious and varied, the shops and stalls were full of interesting items and tempting snacks. What's more, to our delight, the traditional West African culture had in no way disappeared with the oil boom." Thanks to mineral wealth and a relatively low population growth, Gabon is better off financially than most of Africa. This fact is reflected in their care and attention to basic ecological concerns. For example, the vast coastal wetlands and marshes, are still largely intact. This is something with which ATA members will heartily agree, the Association being a strong advocate of ecotourism. Gabon, which hosted the Africa Travel Association (ATA) International Congress in 1980, is easily accessible from the USA and Canada.

GABON The Bushmeat Project has been established to develop and support community based partnerships that will hel p the people of various African countries, to develop alternatives to unsustainable bushmeat commerce. The programme is a long-term effort to provide economic and social incentive to people to protect great apes and other endangered wildlife. Some of the largest wildlife and animal welfare organizations in North America have joined them in agreement that the Bushmeat Crisis is a top priority concern and that it is time to act. Some of the largest wildlife and animal welfare organizations in North America have joined them in agreement that the Bushmeat Crisis is a top priority concern and that it is time to act. To learn more about this effort check the website or email to hq@biosynergy.org . Donations will be used to help turn poachers to protectors, educate people about the intrinsic values of wildlife, and to create new protected areas in which apes will be safe for people to study and observe. Much of Africa's habitat and its wildlife is threatened by overpopulation and unsustainable use of natural resources by poor people. Raptors are no exception; over 100 species either breed in Africa or migrate there each winter from Europe and Asia. Conservation of far ranging species like raptors and other migratory birds presents special problems to biologists. How do we protect animals that range so far and need widely dispersed habitats in which to survive?

The Republic of Gabon is situated in West Africa astride the Equator. Gabon was discovered by the Portuguese in 1473. The British, Dutch, French and Spanish followed thereafter, many of the engaging in the slave trade. However, in 1849 the French established Libreville as a colony for freed slaves. Gabon gained its independence in 1960.
The biggest attractions for Gabon are its rainforests, birds and many species of primates. The rainforests are rich with wildlife and contain over 8000 species of plants and 600 species of bird. The forests, savanna, swamps and rivers provide an ideal habitat for elephant, buffalo, panther, antelope, hippopotami, crocodile, gorilla, chimpanzee, brilliant butterflies and colourful birds, including the grey parrot. Gabon's long Atlantic seaboard offers some of the best deep-sea fishing in the world.
Tourism is still in its infancy and the restrictions caused by lack of infrastructure are the very reason for the lack of environmental damage. Visitors should not expect the same levels of service as in countries where tourism is well-developed. Modern facilities are not always available, so having a adventurous spirit keeping an open mind, and being willing to exercise understanding and patience will assure you of a wonderful experience during your visit. Gabon is rich in art and culture, having a great number of ethnic groups. Masked and costumed dances accompanied by music and singing are the most important ritual ceremonies and take many forms. Gabon People Back to Top Gabon has a population (2001 estimate) of 1,221,175. The overall population density is 5 persons per sq km (12 per sq mi). Some 54 percent of the people live in urban areas. Much of the country’s interior is uninhabited. All of Gabon's 40 or so ethnic groups, except the few thousand Pygmies, speak Bantu languages and, on that basis, can be classified into 10 larger groups. The Myene group (including the Mpongwe and Orungu), though only a small part of the population today, has played an important role in the history of the country as a result of its location along the northern coasts. The Fang, who belong to the larger Ewondo or Pahouin group also found in southern Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, account for one-third of the population; they live north of the Ogooué River. The largest groups south of the Ogooué are the Sira (including the Eshira and Punu), the Nzebi (Njabi), and the Mbete; these groups together form close to half the population. Less numerous peoples include the Benga and Seke (Sheke) in the far northwest, the Kota and Teke in the east, and the Vili along the far southern coast.
