From Scapigliatura to Futurism Alongside the exhibition devoted to Picasso, Palazzo Reale in Milan is also hosting an extraordinary exhibition that spans almost sixty years. A historical time of intense political and cultural change, the half century in question goes from the second half of the Nineteenth Century to the end of the First World War. In those days, Milan played a leading economic and moral role in an Italy heading towards its difficult unification. It was a city of modernity and change, spawning and adopting artists with fresh cultural and artistic aspirations. This is the essential focus of the exhibition: to throw light on the modernity of Lombard art during that period, as it emerged and then grew increasingly strong.
A hundred works illustrate the development in theme, style and form, progressing from the Scapigliatura movement by way of Divisionism through to Futurism. This theory concerned with history and art, corroborated by scientific studies, is presented to the general public for the first time at the new exhibition. The exhibition focuses on the continuity that existed between the Futurist movement and the two preceding trends.

Russian Futurism
Vladimir Mayakovsky, from 'Mayakovsky A Tragedy' (1914)
The first use of the word futurism by a Russian art movement, was by a group known as the (Ego-Futurists) in 1911. Most of the individuals involved in this group were only 'half-baked' aestheticisms. A far more radical literary movement in Russia at this time were the Hylaens . However, in the beginning they did not consider themselves to be futurists at all. It was only after the decline of the Ego-Futurist group around 1913, that the Hylaens started to examine a set of ideas that were a synthesis of Italian Futurism and French Cubism. The Hylaens were originally organized by a graphic artist by the name of David Burliuk (1882-1967), who was their F. T. Marinetti. Among the members of this group was Velimir Khlebnikov (1885-1922), Alexei Kruchenykh (1886-1970), and the well-known 'Poet of the Revolution,' Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930). Eventually the Hylaens became known as Russia's only futurist group at the expense of several other Russian avant-garde cliques who had also existed at the same time. Perhaps the greatest 20th century experimental poet of Russia, as well as the rest of the world, was Velimir Khlebnikov

  • Futurism (art) Futurism was a 20th Century art movement. Although a nascent Futurism can been seen surfacing throughout the very early years of that century, the 1907 essay Entwurf einer neuen Astetik der Tonkunst (Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music) by the Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni is sometimes claimed as its true jumping-off point. Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Futurism is a term referring to writers Though anyone who creates a written work may be called a writer , the term is usually reserved for those who write creatively, professionally and/or those who have written in many different forms. Skilled writers are adept at using language to portray ideas and images, whether it be in fiction or non-fiction. A writer may compose in many different forms, including, but not limited to, poetry, prose, music (see: composer), technical writing, journalism and academic papers.

The term is often used among writers and publishers who wish to break out of what is commonly called the "sci-fi ghetto". There is an unfortunate tendency among both many publishers and a large segment of the reading public who tend to expect only science-fiction stories from a person who has once written science-fiction. Writers such as Harlan Ellison have deliberate rejected identification as a science-fiction writer for precisely such reasons; they don't reject the SF genre (which Ellison, for example, still participates in) but they do reject the ghettoization of their work.

Futurism is NOT Dead!
I appreciated a ping I received from IFTF's new blog " Future Now " today. It brought to my attention a challenging post "Futurism is Dead!" just published in Wired. It brought back Michael Marrion words at the WFS meeting in July. However Michael was constructive rather than dismissive and while I've included quotes from Hope's article below it troubles me that Wired published it. So in a world of uncertainty Wired should one have a point of view? First some background: Alex provides a thoughtful evolution of the field in response to Hope's criticism. To make it a little more interesting the editor of "The Futurist" responds and of their response you may be the judge. Alex's response to Hope Cristol's Wired Magazine article, "Futurism is Dead." [Future Now] is a worthy read for background. This was fueled by comments by Hope Cristol who writes in Wired Futurism is doomed and not just because fools are endemic to the field. It's doomed because the loosely informed, jack-of-all-trades, trend-watching pontificator (read: professional futurist) is obsolete.

Translated by Sven-Erik Soosaar The First Conference of Young Finno-Ugrian Authors on Ethno-Futurism took place on May 5 to 9, 1994 in Tartu. The conference was held in the honour of the fifth anniversary of the Estonian Kostabi $ociety, which itself was founded in the spirit of ethno-futurism. All in all, about a hundred guests were invited to the Tartu days of ethno-futurism, representing Udmurts, Komis, Maris, Karelians, Finns, Livonians, Erzyas, Hungarians, the Saami, Võro and Seto peoples. To all these peoples, Tartu is a place well known as well as a symbolic meeting place: the University of Tartu has bundled together Finno-Ugric peoples, and, even when under the rule of the Russian Empire, offered hope for the future for the peoples living in the territory of the empire. The aim of the conference was to introduce ethno-futurism to young Finno-Ugric artists and writers by means of speeches, films, exhibitions, songs and meetings. The last day of the conference was entirely dedicated to the discussion of intentions, common and individual, concerning ethno-futurism and the planning of co-operation.

    Futurism: The Third Foundation
by Thomas Ice The third biblical foundation for a systematic understanding of the pretribulation rapture is futurism. An important, but seemingly little-recognized aspect of proper interpretation of Bible prophecy is the role of timing. When will a prophecy be fulfilled in history? There are four possibilities. The four views are simple in the sense that they reflect the only four possibilities in relation to time-past, present, future, and timeless. The preterist (past) believes that most, if not all prophecy has already been fulfilled, usually in relation to the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. The historicist (present) sees much of the current church age as equal to the tribulation period. Thus, prophecy has been and will be fulfilled during the current church age. Futurists (future) believe that virtually all prophetic events will not occur in the current church age, but will take place in the future tribulation, Second Coming, or Millennium. The idealist (timeless) does not believe either that the Bible indicates the timing of events or that we can determine their timing in advance. Therefore, idealists think that prophetic passages mainly teach great ideas or truths about God to be applied regardless of timing.

    Futurism (art)
Futurism was a 20th Century art movement. Futurism was a largely Italian movement, although it also had adherents in other countries, most notably Russia. The Futurists explored every medium of art, including painting sculpture , poetry, theatre, music and even gastronomy. The Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was the first among them to produce a manifesto of their artistic philosophy in his Manifesto of Futurism (1909), first released in Milan and published in the French paper Le Figaro (February 20). Marinetti summed up the major principles of the Futurists, including a passionate loathing of ideas from the past, especially political and artistic traditions. He and others also espoused a love of speed, technology and violence. The car, the plane, the industrial town were all legendary for the Futurists, because they represented the technological triumph of man over nature.

    File Under Futurism

(Caipirinha) Despite his fairly young age, DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller) has had a wide and varied career already. He'd released mix discs ( The Necropolis Project ), solo albums ( Songs Of A Dead Dreamer and Riddim Warfare ) and has even scored films ( Slam ). Not only that, but he's written for the Village Voice and several other publications and has even done art installments. He's always had lofty goals in terms of the sounds that he produces, and has written a lot of material about what he likes to accomplish with his music. It shouldn't be surprising to hear that his work are greatly varied affairs. Not only do his mixed releases go all over the musical map, sometimes straying into nothing more than noise, but his original work varies just as greatly. After having said that, though, I can honestly say that File Under Futurism is probably his most cohesive and solid work to date. Sure, he still changes up tempo a ton on the work and can rip a fast breakbeat as well as a downtempo groove, but this work has a feel that some of his other work doesn't. Of course, one of the very interesting elements of this disc is the concept itself. It's literally like worlds colliding when the first album-titled track starts out with a strain of strings while some strange electronic squiggling swirls in the background. Eventually, there's a bit of scratching and the track goes full-bore into rapid-fire beats and a slap bass while the strings still curl in the background. The short second track "Interstitial A" is more familiar as DJ Spooky territory in its experimental sound-collage nature, but the album goes back to more of a collaborative mode on the slow, thick beat of "Bring Me My Mental Health." This time, the strings play at a weeping pace while Spooky drops a clunking beat down behind it all and some spoken rhymes by Gnomad drift in and out of the mix.

In fact, he said, science serves whoever holds power. If the people who hold power are evil, then they will use science for evil purposes—and Russell was not impressed with the people who held power. “I am compelled to fear that science will be used to promote the power of dominant groups, rather than to make men happy,” he wrote. “Icarus, having been taught to fly by his father Daedalus, was destroyed by his rashness. I fear that the same fate may overtake the populations whom modern men of science have taught to fly.”" TeleDude May 29, 3:30am:

    Futurism e-visited Steve Dixon
    Abstract
The paper argues the centrality of Futurist aesthetics and philosophies to current performance work utilising computer technologies, and suggests that Futurism’s legacy to ‘digital performance’ has been greatly underestimated. A close analysis of Futurist theatre manifestos reveals clear relationships between theatrical plans and practices separated by almost a century. These include fundamental principles of Futurist performance art such as alogicality, parallel action, photodynamism, luminous scenography, virtual actors, ‘synthetic theatre’ and the cult of the machine.
‘Typist’, Anton and Arturo Bragaglia (1911)
    Introduction
The work of art is valuable only in so far as it is vibrated by the reflexes of the future.
    André Breton
In the early twentieth century, the Italian Futurists worked towards a new synthesising and technological theatrical form, just as theatre practitioners using computer technologies are attempting today. Exalting ‘the machine’ and the new technologies of their day, the Futurists sought a multimedia convergence of artforms and the marriage of art with technology (see Berghaus, 1998; Kirby, 1971). In 1916, this Gesamtkunstwerk was afforded a mathematical formula, like a piece of computer code designed to activate a virtual event: what they termed ‘synthetic theatre’:
