of the Foundation of
Futurism and Preterism
The papacy suffered a major setback through the Reformation. The help of the monastic orders was sought, but they were so decadent that they had lost the respect of the people. The Dominicans and Franciscans, peddling relics and indulgences, had become the butt of ridicule and mockery. At this crisis Loyola and his companions offered their services, to go wherever the pope should designate, as preachers, missionaries, teachers, counselors, and reformers. A new order was created, authorized in 1540, which infused a new spirit and spread rapidly in Europe. Like a wounded giant, Romanism arose in desperation to recover her lost prestige and shrunken territory. Their ambitious goal was to become the universal and principal order of the Roman church. Though they took the name Society of Jesus (Jesuits), the Protestants termed them Jesuwider (against Jesus). Their influence was immediately felt. They grew more powerful and comprehensive year by year, employing science, art, culture, politics, foreign missions, trades and industry. They began to preach, as Protestants were accustomed to do, in the streets and marts, coming to be among the most eloquent preachers of the age. The churches were too small to accommodate the multitudes that flocked to hear them. At Rome, they were scattered throughout the various churches. Then they began to spread throughout Italy, Portugal, Germany, and especially Austria and Bavaria. They hemmed in the Protestant movement on all sides. Some cities, such as Ingolstadt and Cologne, opened their doors; others opposed them.

Futurism (art)
Futurism was a 20th Century art movement. Although a nascent Futurism can been seen surfacing throughout the very early years of that century, the essay Entwurf einer neuen Astetik der Tonkunst (Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music) by the Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni is sometimes claimed as its true jumping-off point. Futurism was a largely Italian movement, although it also had adherents in other countries, most notably Russia The Futurists explored every medium of art, including painting sculpture poetry theatre ... music and even gastronomy . The Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was the first among them to produce a manifesto of their artistic philosophy in his Manifesto of Futurism ), first released in Milan and published in the French paper Le Figaro February 20 ). Marinetti summed up the major principles of the Futurists, including a passionate loathing of ideas from the past, especially political and artistic traditions. He and others also espoused a love of speed technology and violence . The car, the plane, the industrial town were all legendary for the Futurists, because they represented the technological triumph of man over

("The Foundation of Futurism" ["Manifesto of Futurism," 1909], translated from the French by Eugen Weber, reprinted by permission of Dodd, Mead and Company from Paths to the Present We have been up all night, my friends and I, beneath mosque lamps whose copper domes, as open-worked as our souls, yet had electric hearts. And while we trod our native sloth into opulent Persian carpets, we carried our discussion to the farthest limits of logic and covered sheets of paper with insane scrawls. A vast pride swelled in our breasts, to feel ourselves standing alone, like lighthouses or advanced guards, facing the army of enemy stars that camp in heavenly bivouacs. Alone with the greasers in the infernal engine-rooms of great ships, alone with the dark phantoms that rummage in the red bellies of bewitched locomotives, alone with the drunks fluttering, battering their wings against the walls! And unexpectedly, like festive villages that the Po in flood suddenly unsettles and uproots to sweep them off, over the falls and eddies of a deluge, to the sea, we were disturbed by the rumbling of enormous double-decker trams, passing in fits and starts, streaked with lights. Then the silence got worse. As we listened to the exhausted prayer of the old canal and heard the grating bones of palaces moribund in their greenery whiskers, all of a sudden hungry cars roared beneath our windows.

Futurism
Entertaining comment from Will Davies in The Work Foundation's iSociety Blog Futurology hits the mainstream media at this time of year. Witness this from Peter York, via the BBC Trends which started in the mid- to late-90s, such as the "dome-fever, young country, Cool Britannia" sort of thing will come to an end [in 2004], marked by a single defining event. "I can't say with clarity what it will be," he says, "but some event will happen to set the seal on it." Well thanks Peter, but excuse me if I don't rush straight down to Ladbrokes clutching a fist-full of twenties. Below are some critical reflections on futurism. Firstly, its always amused me that many futurists base their case upon two entirely contradictory claims, these being:
a) That we live in rapidly changing times, meaning that the future is less and less certain.
b) That despite the future being less and less certain, futurists are somehow able to unlock its secrets! (err... so how come people didn't used to go around making endless predictions, if things were once so much more predictable?) Making predictions is fine, I know I like to indulge. But so often this can lapse into something more like cod-astrology. Also, making predictions is sometimes a way of avoiding saying something more personal and authentic (for example saying "that won't work" is a cop out from saying "I feel threatened by that idea".) I daresay Peter York thinks the whole Cool Britannia thing sucks, but maybe making a prediction of a mysterious defining event feels more important?

Our Mission
The Neo-Futurists are a collective of wildly productive writer/director/performers who create:
  • Theater that is fusion of sport, poetry, and living-newspaper. Non-illusory, interactive performance that conveys our experiences and ideas as directly and honestly as possible. Immediate, unreproducable events at headslappingly affordable prices.
We embrace those unreached or unmoved by conventional theater-inspiring them to thought, feeling, and action.
Our Statement of Purpose
As a group, we are dedicated to:
  • Strengthening the human bond between performer and audience. We feel that the more sincere and genuine we can be on stage, the greater the audiences identification with the unadorned people and issues before them. Embracing a form of non-illusory theater in order to present our lives and ideas as directly as possible. All of our plays are set on the stage in front of the audience. All of our characters are ourselves. All of our stories really happened. All of our tasks are actual challenges. We do not aim to "suspend the audience's disbelief," but to create a world where the stage is a continuation of daily life. Embracing the moment through audience interaction and planned obsolescence. In order to keep ourselves as alive on stage as possible, we interweave elements of chance and change — contradicting the expected and eliminating the permanent.

    Italian Futurism and Fascism
How an artistic trend anticipated a counterrevolutionary tendency
    By Alan Woods
During my recent speaking tour of Austria, I was taken to visit an exhibition of Italian futurist art in Vienna. It was a very revealing experience. The connection between Italian Futurism and fascism is well known, but here for the first time I was able to see with complete clarity the psychology of the Italian bourgeois and petit bourgeois intellectuals in the period before and during the First World War that gave rise to this singular phenomenon. It is an object lesson on how art and politics can become inextricably linked, and how this mixture arises from a definite social and class basis. This is not to say that the two things are the same, or that the relation between them is automatic and direct. On the contrary, the development of art, literature and music follows its own immanent laws. The development of art and politics form two entirely separate lines, with their own determining features, turning points, complex relations and revolutions. However, since all social phenomena share a common ground, the two lines frequently meet and bisect. The study of this complicated and dialectical interrelationship would be a fascinating but difficult exercise. It is not often that the connection can be clearly established. But in this case it is quite transparent. Futurism arose as part of the general artistic ferment that characterised the intellectual life of Europe, and particularly France, in the period before 1914. This was a period of spectacular advance of capitalism, which was developing the productive forces at a dizzying pace. Europe and the USA were industrialising rapidly. Industry was advancing at the expense of agriculture, the proletariat at the expense of the peasantry. Old ideas were crumbling. In the field of science the basis was being laid for a twin revolution, connected with relativity theory and quantum mechanics. The human mind was gradually penetrating beyond the world of appearance and discovering a deeper reality in the sub-atomic world, where the laws of the ordinary world of sense perception do not apply. The sensation existed that this was a new age, an age of progress in which the machine was king. Out of this idea arose

Discussions of Futurist music have been incorrect and misleading because after the period, musicians and critics have known only a concept of the music, which has been modified by subsequent theorizing and interpretation. Everything that does not fit into the theories has been regarded with suspicion, considered not to be music, and "relegated'' to the domain of the visual arts or theater. History needs to be reevaluated in terms of avant-garde movements such as Futurism so that those attempts that have opened the path to later artistic activity may be distinguishable from those which have fallen back on themselves, and have therefore failed to connect with the evolution of artistic thought. Early in the 20th century the Italian musical world was characterized by the persistence of the late Romantic tradition, The curtain had already come down many times on Parsifal and on "program music'' but the "season" continued (with inferior imitations). During this time one figure stands out as the initiator of a new musical concept (one that can be located at the root of Futurism and other avant-garde movernents) Ferruccio Busoni, who was also one of the greatest pianists of his time. Seeds of all the ideas that were later enthusiastically expressed by the Futurists Balilla Pratella and Luigi Russolo can be found in Busoni's essay, Entwurf einer neuen Astetik der Tonkunst (Sketch of a New Esthetic of the Art of Sound), 1907, published in Trieste by Schmidl.

It was inspired and promoted by the poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who published the Futurist Manifesto in the Paris newspaper Le Figaro historical avant-gardes The themes of machines and modernity remained a characteristic of the second phase of Futurism, which in the years between the two world wars constituted one of the most advanced components, also on the official level, of Italian artistic production. Marinetti continued to be its indisputed leader, and it was he who invited Sassu to contribute to the Futurist room at the 1928 Biennale in Venice. SASSU AND FUTURISM The Factory Sassu’s Futurist period, which was part of the second phase of Futurism, dates from the earliest years of his activity until about 1930. His fundamental model was Boccioni, many of whose works Sassu could see directly in the studio of another exponent of this second Futurism, Fedele Azari. However, Sassu’s greatest response was to what could be defined as the most "classical" aspect of Boccioni’s Futurism, that is, the search for a solidity of figure within a dynamic structure of the painting. His typically Futurist works are Plastic Nude , 1928, for which two preparatory drawings survive, and Man Drinking at the Spring Mafarka il futurista

Futurism Futurism, a unique phenomenon to the modern era, not only found its roots in many of the arts, but also and most persuasively in politics. The Futurists were the first artists of this century who pledged themselves to ideological activism and devoted their energies and talents to converting he masses to that ideal, rather than to formalizing and promoting their individual artistic merits." The Futurist artistic movement began not through a series of works as most other artistic movements do, but through a series of manifests. Marinetti's bellicose manifesto generated interest and brought Italy into the Twentieth century. His militant views on politics and is visionary artistic mind created a public demand for a forward thinking society. Many artists were drawn to Marinetti's empassioned statements; others only in spirit. Some artists pointed out that there was nothing new in the Futurist movement, while although it was most likely true, did not dissuade its followers Marinetti turned his political efforts to reacquiring land in the northern portion of Italy that had been claimed by Austria. He was again rewarded and in 1915, Italy won back the rights to most of these northern territories. When World War I started shortly after, the Futurists all enlisted. Some of them, such as Luigi Russolo, became officers in the army and became highly decorated soldiers. At the end of the war, the Futurists returned to their promotion of their forward thinking philosophies. These interested a forward-thinking, young Fascist named Benito Mussolini. It was Mussolini who became one of the most politically active in conjunction with the positions of the Futurists, during the years 1918 to 1920. After the successful reintegration of the position of the Futurists in society, Mussolini used his political clout to silence them. The discarded Futurists became embittered by the political situation, and with drew them selves from political activism.
