Basic Programming Concepts
What a Program Does
At the most basic level, the job of a program is to process some input data and produce results. @ifnottex The "program" in the figure can be either a compiled program interpreted When you write a program, it usually consists of the following, very basic set of steps: @ifnottex
Initialization
BEGIN rule (see section The BEGIN and END ... Special Patterns ). If you were baking a cake, this might consist of laying out all the mixing bowls and the baking pan, and making sure you have all the ingredients that you need.
Processing
Clean Up
END rule (see section The BEGIN and END ... Special Patterns ). After the cake comes out of the oven, you still have to wrap it in plastic wrap to keep anyone from tasting it, as well as wash the mixing bowls and other utensils.
An algorithm is a detailed set of instructions necessary to accomplish a task, or process data. It is much the same as a recipe for baking a cake. Programs implement algorithms. Often, it is up to you to design the algorithm and implement it, simultaneously. The "logical chunks" we talked about previously are called records , similar to the records a company keeps on employees, a school keeps for students, or a doctor keeps for patients. Each record has many component parts, such as first and last names, date of birth, address, and so on. The component parts are referred to as the

This module assumes knowledge of the basic concepts of spreadsheets and how they can be used to manipulate information. It then builds on this to cover the automation of tasks using macros and the use of Visual Basic programming within Microsoft Excel, thus enabling the construction of customised, user-friendly interfaces for a spreadsheet. A variety of Operational Research problems are used as the basis for this module, although no prior knowledge of OR is required. Topics covered include simulation, logical programming ideas and debugging. This module can be taken successfully by any student who is prepared to learn the basics of computer programming, and who wishes to learn some practical problem solving skills which may be of benefit in future employment.

Microsoft's Gates sees a software-driven future led by computer science
After Microsoft's Bill Gates addressed a Call Auditorium audience Feb. 25, Cornell President Jeffrey Lehman presented him with a sweatshirt commemorating Cornell's role in Microsoft's growth. The legend reads "When I heard Steve talk about Cornell I began to take the Internet seriously," a reference to Gates' response to Cornell alumnus Steve Sinofsky's famous "Cornell is wired" message to Gates, which influenced Microsoft's mid-'90s strategic reorientation toward Internet-based products. By Bill Steele Microsoft Corp.'s Bill Gates sees a future in which technology manages all our information for us, with devices at work, at home and in our pockets all seamlessly linked. The hardware is already here or coming soon, he says, but the challenge is to create the software. And, he says, he needs today's college students to produce it. On Feb. 26 Gates brought that message to a Cornell audience packed with computer science students in Call Alumni Auditorium of Kennedy Hall. His appearance was part of a whirlwind speaking tour of five colleges. "I want to share some of my excitement about the impact computer science is having on our lives," Gates began, and he went on to argue that the major developments in technology over the next 10 years will be in software. "Of course," he added, "I'm biased."

A Note on Declarative Programming Paradigms and the Future of Definitional Programming
Olof Torgersson

Abstract:
We discuss some approaches to declarative programming including functional programming, various logic programming languages and extensions, and definitional programming. In particular we discuss the programmers need and possibilities to influence the control part of programs. We also discuss some problems of the definitional programming language GCLA and try to find directions for future research into definitional programming.
Introduction
Even though declarative programming languages have been around for some thirty years by now they have still not gained any widespread use for real-world applications. At the same time object-oriented programming has conquered the world and is the methodology used for most programs developed today. This is a fact even though the used object-oriented languages like C++ lacks most features considered important in declarative programming like a clear and simple semantics, automatic memory management, and so on. It should be obvious that the object-oriented approach contains something that is intuitevely appealing to humans. Accordingly many attempts have been made to include object-oriented features into declarative programming and several languages like Prolog and Haskell have object-oriented extensions In this note we discuss some existing declarative programming paradigms including definitional programming. In particular we will focus on control and also try to identify some characteristics that we feel it is necessary to incorporate in the next generation definitional programming language to gain success.

This is a book for people who want to master VB.NET at a professional level and are willing to spend the time and energy that it takes. It is hard to find a VB.NET topic that isn't covered well, but for my purposes, the chapters on XML, Web forms, ASP.NET and Web services are very valuable so far. The excellent code and the walkthroughs are well done, although the listings are sometimes longer than they might need to be and sometimes force you to flip back and forth several pages.Even though ...

CSIS 1560: BASIC Programming Assignment 2: Arithmetic Computations Due Oct. 9
Programming Exercise 3, page 177
Before you begin writing the code, think carefully about your design o What basic steps must your program take, and in what order? o How will the necessary computations be done? o What variables will you need, and what type should they be?
Since there are a number of steps your program must accomplish, consider implementing it incrementally – that is, writing it one step at a time, and using the debugging tools to check the correctness of each step.
Since there are a number of things in this problem (particularly related to costs) that are subject to change in the future, use constants where appropriate.
Make sure that your code is well documented . In particular, make sure it is clear what each variable in your program represents. As mentioned in class, this can be based on your initial design

Health Access Projects Health Access News The Challenge With the arrival of the digital age has come a flood of health information on the Internet, and at the same time, changes in the health care system have shifted the burden of health education from doctor to patient. Individuals and community health organizations are seeking answers to their health questions outside the doctor's office and encountering a bewildering array of information that is often out-of-date, inaccessible, biased or conflicting. The Strategy Health Access is a model for building partnerships among libraries and local organizations and agencies with the goal of promoting healthy communities and increasing awareness and use of library resources for prevention and wellness. The program is built on the idea that health literacy, or the ability to read, understand and use health information, is the key to improving health, and that libraries are a critical partner in the effort to address health literacy and provide quality, understandable health information.

MSX BASIC PROGRAMMING CONTEST
MSX BASIC programming contest The MSX Association has started a programming contest for MSX-BASIC. The winning programs will be listed in the upcoming MSX-Magazine 2, which will be released this autumn. There are little rules to the contest: The code must be BASIC. The program must work in MSXPLAYer. The program may not be longer than 72 lines of code (3 screens in WIDTH 40). If you want to send in BASIC code, you can mail it to ant-msx@ml.ascii.co.jp Relevant link: MSX Association programming contest Submitted by: snout on June 26 2003, 23:22 By ballarena on June 27 2003, 01:40 Little rules, but does the code have to be legible/understandable? I mean, what does the contest try to do? Show off the power of BASIC or trying to educate people in the use of BASIC? Also, I assume that in either case the BASIC program isn't allowed to carry any machine language (z80) code?

Download: Gm_dll.zip DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library, and it is also the 3 letter extension used for the file type. Basically it is a collection of procedures and functions that can be used often and by any language (to a certain extent). The entire windows API is made up of DLL's, look through your system folder and you'll find upwards of 600 different DLL files. Most of the directX files are DLL's. Windows comes with lots of DLL's, almost all of them are the API, the rest that you'll find are probably for other applications. They are used to extend the programs that they are associated with, by offering new functions and optimized code. One common use for DLL's is to simplify the original program; Say you had a memory access program, that used lots of extremely complex maths formulas. If you needed to use it often you would make a procedure to handle it - but it would still be in the original EXE program. If it were in a DLL it would work the same, but it would be independent from the original EXE; this would allow you to update it without having to recompile the exe (more on this later). The main advantage is that, in vb, you would only have to declare the DLL in the declarations section and you could call the procedure from anywhere in the program, and not worry about it cluttering up your project.
