C.I.S. 047 Spring 2002 Visual Basic Programming Class Hours: Monday and Wednesday 2:30-4:00pm, Room D119
Lab Hours: MW 4:00-5:30pm, Room D114
Instructor: Jonathan Traugott
Office Hours: Monday 1:30-2:30 D114
Instructor Email: alamedavb@hotmail.com
Course Prerequisites: CIS 47 is an introductory course for which there are no specific prerequisites. Familiarity with Windows is recommended. Class Format: CIS 47 will have two tracks designed to accommodate both beginning and experienced programmers. Each lecture will be broken up into a basic section and an advanced section. Following the basic lecture, beginning students may go directly to the lab and get started on their programs. Those who opt to stay will benefit from an informal discussion of additional VB features and programming concepts. Lab assignments will contain a subset of more advanced problems to complement this material.
Course Overview: Visual Basic is an object oriented, event driven and graphically based computer language. As such it differs radically from a so-called procedural language like C where none of these concepts are part of the language. Programming in VB includes essentially two separate processes. First the programmer designs a user interface using pre-made components such as forms, buttons, labels and dialog boxes. Once the interface has been created the programmer writes code to handle a user's actions (e.g. clicking on a button). This second phase involves the classic elements of program construction: variables, subroutines, control structures, looping, arrays, input and output and algorithm design.

A method of teaching Visual Basic Programming
  • Using our text books
Guided Programming Activities Using Visual Basic published 1996, now out of print; a printable version on CD-ROM may be available late 2001 Guided Database Applications Using Visual Basic published 1998 by Cambridge University Press Our books are instruction manuals which, if followed carefully, will bring quick results. Each chapter begins a new project introducing new skills. The skills are cumulative, and the books are best used if the exercises are followed sequentially. In each project we follow the same order of tasks, thus establishing a systematic routine to simplify future programming activities. We explain what is to be achieved at each step of the instructions. While trying to avoid confusion, we indicate where there are alternatives that could be chosen. At the conclusion of each project is a 'Computer Talk' section where we explain what the computer understands by the kind of language that the programmer uses. This section takes up elements from the project and formalises them so that they can be used later in other contexts. Thus the theory follows the practice.

Updated: 17/4/04 To create games, utilities, drivers or applications you need to learn to program and the Amiga (or PC) has loads of programming languages to choice from, the question is which one to use? It really depends on a number of factors: skill of the programmer, the software to be developed, time to be spent on it, speed, stability, and type of software. For example, a device driver would not be written in Basic or Logo but more like C or even assembler for extra speed and stability required. If you are a beginner, then you need to learn the basics of programming and there are many books, guides, tutorials and courses available. You need to learn commands, syntax, variables, arrays, memory, input and output, files, structured or object orientated programming as so on. At lot of these concepts are shared between many languages, so learning them will allow you to almost develop in any language! For a list of programming terminology, try these Terms

http://www.fys.ruu.nl/~bergmann/history.html
A brief history of the development of BASIC
Read here about the illustre past of our favourite language.... BASIC (standing for Beginner's All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) is a system developed at Dartmouth College in 1964 under the directory of J. Kemeny and T. Kurtz. It was implemented for the G.E.225. It was meant to be a very simple language to learn and also one that would be easy to translate. Furthermore, the designers wished it to be a stepping-stone for students to learn on of the more powerful languages such as FORTRAN or ALGOL. From " Programming languages: History and fundamentals " by Jean E. Sammet.
Daniel P. Hudson writes:
Bill Gates and Paul Allen had something different in mind. In the 1970's when M.I.T.S.'s Altair personal computer was being conceived Allen convinced Gates to help him develop a Basic Language for it. When M.I.T.S. answered with interest, The future of BASIC and the PC began. Gates was attending Harvard at the time and Allen was a Honeywell employee. Allen and Gates licensed their BASIC to M.I.T.S. for the Altair. This version took a total of 4K memory including the code and data used for a source code. Gates and Allen then ported Basic to other various platforms and moved back to their hometown of Seattle where they had attended grade school together. It was at this time that the Microsoft Corporation began it's reign in the PC world. By the late 70's, BASIC had been ported to platforms such as the Apple, Commodore and Atari computers and now it was time for Bill Gates's DOS which came with a Basic interpreter. The IBM-DOS version of this interpreter became known as BASICA, and at the time IBM was in major competition with clones so it was setup to require the BIOS distributed with IBM computers. The version distributed with MS-DOS was GW-BASIC and ran on any machine that could run DOS. There were no differences between BASIC-A and GW-BASIC which seems to make IBM's idea useless.

Summary
Introduction
The Component Object Model (COM) is founded on the idea of interface-based programming; COM would have no meaning without the concept of the interface. If you are a Visual Basic programmer who is trying to understand how COM really works, you should spend the time to learn how and why interfaces are so valuable in object-oriented software design. An understanding of interface-based programming will make you a much stronger COM programmer. This, in turn, will prepare you for creating COM-based applications for distributed environments such as Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS). Interface-based programming exists outside the world of COM. It is a programming discipline that is based on the separation of the public interface from implementation. It was pioneered in languages such as C++ and Smalltalk by software engineers who discovered that using distinct interfaces could make their software, especially large applications, easier to maintain and extend. The creators of Java saw the elegance of interface-based programming and consequently built support for it directly into their language.
