This web page is intended to enhance the student's learning experience and not supplant the classroom, the instructor, textbooks or other resources. Obviously nothing can replace going out into the woods and learning the FUNGI!! Course format:
The course will consist of lectures (10-11 am) and laboratories (1-4 pm) every Monday and Friday. Lectures will cover basic information on life histories, systematics, ecology, genetics and cell biology of fungi. Laboratories will focus on fungal taxonomy. Laboratory exercises will include microscopy, isolation techniques, learning to use keys and describe fungi. A total of five field trips will be made to local forests to provide the student with the opportunity to observe and collect fungi in their natural habitat. Students will have time to work on collections during laboratory periods, however, outside time will be necessary to complete to collection. Examinations: Exams and practicals will given during laboratory periods. There will be three exams and three practicals. The content of the exams will cover the lectures from the previous lectures and relavent chapters from the textbook. The content of practicals will be strongly influenced by what fungi are fruiting at that time and relavent information from the field guide. The final examination for graduate students will include a 50 pt comprehensive section.

undertakes research on the systematics, population biology, biogeography and ecology of mushrooms and their relatives, and the diversity and ecology of mycorrhizae. Current projects include monographic studies on mushrooms and false truffles, a survey of Costa Rican Agaricales, a comparison of U.S./China mycogeographic relationships, and studies in restoration biology and of the impact of air pollution on fungi.
    Sabine Huhndorf's
research program focuses on the systematics, biogeography, and floristics of Ascomycetes, especially Pyrenomycetes and Loculoascomycetes. Her primary current research is a multifaceted study of the Lasiosphaeriaceae, a common group of wood inhabiting Ascomycetes. This project is funded through a NSF Partnership for Enhanced Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET) grant. Sabine also is investigating factors influencing the diversity of tropical wood inhabiting Ascomycetes.
Fernando Fernandez studies the systematics of Ascomycetes. Currently, he is working with Sabine Huhndorf on the Lasiosphaeriaceae project. His research focuses on the systematics and biogeography of the genus Chaetosphaeria and allied genera.

    http://www.fmnh.org/research_collections/botany/collections_fungi.htm
The Mycology Collection at The Field Museum is a major resource for mycological systematic and biodiversity studies. It consists of approximately 157,000 specimens with world-wide coverage and broad taxonomic representation. It is rich in type collections, especially of Neotropical taxa. The greatest strengths of the collection are the Agaricales sensu lato (e.g., mushrooms, boletes, false-truffles, puffballs, chantrelles, tooth fungi, and coral fungi) and the lichenized Ascomycetes of the Western Hemisphere. The collection is especially significant in that it is one of only two active, large centers for Neotropical Agaricales in North America, and one of only a handful of herbaria active in such studies in the Western Hemisphere. Specific components of the collection are discussed below. Agaricales-

    http://www.botany.hawaii.edu/faculty/wong/bot135/LECT04.htm
Naming and Classification of Fungi Introduction Although it is something that we give little thought to, the naming and classification of objects play an important role in society. Imagine the problems that we would have if we were not given names and if we did not name our cities, streets or pets. Now imagine if we did not classify the books that are in our libraries, tools in hardware stores, video tapes in video stores, etc. Without names for objects and a system to classify them, it would be impossible or at least be very difficult to organize, categorize and find information for which we are searching. It should not be a surprise then that there is a discipline in biology called taxonomy that studies the classification and naming of organisms. Presently, there are approximately 1.5 million species of organisms that have been described by biologists and each year thousand of new species are described by science. It is estimated that the total number of species may range from 5 to 30 million. With such a rich diversity of life on this planet, naming and classifying this many organisms would be a difficult task, to say the least. However, such a system must be constructed if our knowledge in biology is to advance. The job of the taxonomist is a difficult one. The general public thinks of them as snobbish because they refer to organisms with "fancy names". The reputation of the taxonomist is often not regarded in high esteem even among scientist because of its descriptive rather than experimental nature. Christensen (1961), a well respected mycologist-plant pathologist, describes taxonomist as "those who spend their time putting living things into pigeonholes, a low but necessary form of scientific endeavor". The lay person often wonders why taxonomist must refer to onions as

or TomVolkFungi.net Updates to this workshop syllabus may be found online at http://perth.uwlax.edu/Biology/volk/plpath (this page) There have been many exciting changes in Mycology in recent years. The very concept of what belongs in the Kingdom Fungi has changed. Along with those changes have come changes in level of classificationelevation of most classes to phylum status and a cascade of changes underneath that. Most "annoying" to plant scientists have been changes in the accepted names of some familiar fungal pathogens. This lecture/discussion workshop will help you to catch up on what’s happened in mycology since you were in school. We’ll also discuss what students need to know about mycology by the time their degree is awarded. Registration Information: 1. Register early to ensure your place. You can register for this shortcourse when you register for the annual meeting. Registration materials are also available on APS
