Eliza Beulah Blackford (1847-1935)
Papers
Biography: Eliza B. Blackford* was born Eliza P. Larsh in Eaton, Ohio in 1847*. She was educated in the public schools there and married a classmate. Her husband became a minister and they moved to Boston where she began to study drawing and painting under the best teachers at the "Museum School". When she graduated, she had pupils of her own and was a substitute teacher at the school. Eventually she joined the staff of the Museum of Fine Arts where she stayed until her retirement in 1925. She travelled abroad and read French, German and Italian. She took a great interest in Botany, particularly, fungi. Besides her work at the Museum School, she was President of the Boston Mycological Club for several years and had four mushrooms named for her by Prof. Peck of NY. She also belonged to the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Boston Malacological (sp.) Society, the Copley Society, and the Ramblers Group of the Field and Forest Club. She died in January 1935 after a short illness, and left paintings and specimens to the Farlow Herbarium. * Biographical information taken from a letter by Sarah B. Pierce of the Boston Mycological Club (April 24, 1847).

Collected Fungi Links
These links are all from my favorites folder relating to Fungi. They are sorted by country of origin, but otherwise exactly as collected. I have added comments as I can manage it, but it must be said that they are more or less raw collection of links which I have located whilst hunting for information on a variety of topics; hence it cannot be regarded as a complete or balanced collection.
Please note that the term "mushroom" is widely used in North America and Europe as the generic term for all higher fungi, whereas in Australia and the UK, it is often used in the more restricted sense of "edible mushrooms", especially Agaricus campestris, the field mushroom.

They represent the phase of asexual multiplication (anamorph) of the higher fungi (mostly Ascomycetes, and to a lesser extent Basidiomycetes). It is the second largest group of fungi (around 2400 genera and 20,000 species) after the Ascomycetes. The Deuteromycetes are omnipresent in litter, soil, substrate media like faeces etc. It can produce harmful toxins thus cannot be ignored for its economic impact. An estimated 760 million dollars loss incurs in the United States alone due to the harm caused to cattle. The work presented here is based on the modern classification of this group. Barring some tropical examples, it covers essentially genera found in the temperate zone of the Northern hemisphere. The book will interest medical and veterinery mycologists, phytopathologists, food scientists, and ecologists.

A second major research thrust in my laboratory involves the study of characters that have been hypothesized to be preadaptive for the ability of ascomycetes to infect vertebrates. To this aim, my colleagues and I are constructing molecular and morphological data sets for members of the Onygenales, an order of ascomycetes that includes the only pathogens capable of infecting healthy hosts. The purpose of this study is to establish the number(s) of origins of parasitism within the Onygenales and to investigate the evolution of specific characters associated with parasitism. This study has been undertaken in collaboration with Randy Currah (University of Alberta) and Rytas Vilgalys (Duke University).
