Fuel Cells at Watershed?

Once again Lucerne, Switzerland, will become the Mecca of fuel cell developers. From July 1 to 5 the fifth world conference "FUEL CELL 2002" will be even more international and significant than all four conferences previously organized by the European Fuel Cell Forum (www.efcf.com). About 500 participants from over three dozens countries will take part in two parallel conferences and a major exhibit of the most interesting fuel cell products being offered worldwide. The event is endorsed by the World Fuel Cell Council, the European Fuel Cell Group and Fuel Cell 2000 of the US.
The first of the two conferences, "THE FUEL CELL WORLD", is designed for the practitioner. It focuses on technical developments and interesting fuel cell applications. The conference further explores issues related to fuel sources, fuel storage solutions, initial entry product marketing and venture financing. New product introductions will be highlighted. Overall, the conference, as in previous years, is designed to create confidence in the application of fuel cells for everyday energy needs.
This year's scientific symposium, "5th EUROPEAN SOFC FORUM", is devoted to the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) technology. Over 170 papers in this area will be presented, making this symposium the world's largest SOFC convention to date. Never before has any electrolyte-specific meeting attracted more attention. For fuel cell initiates, this interest is not accidental but a clear indication of burgeoning interest in the "high temperature" SOFC devices.

GM believes the answer is hydrogen power. The secret to harnessing hydrogen's power is the fuel cell, which produces a continuous electrical current directly by the oxidation of a fuel. When that fuel is hydrogen, the fuel cell's only emissions are water vapor and heat. The power produced can be used to run electric motors. Christopher Borroni-Bird, head of GM's Design and Technology Fusion Group, explains how fuel cells can impact vehicle design. "They don't have to be bunched together like the cylinders of today's internal combustion engines. They can virtually be spread around the vehicle and take any shape you can imagine."

    Stuart Energy Systems Corporation has received a Toyota fuel cell hybrid vehicle (FCHV), which is based on the automaker's Highlander mid-sized sport utility vehicle (SUV). Stuart Energy's California-based staff will drive the FCHV and provide on-road operational data to Toyota on the vehicle's performance. Hawaii Natural Energy Institute Governor Lingle signs renewable energy bill at HNEI test facility
Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle chose HNEI’s Hawaii Fuel Cell Test Facility (HFCTF) as the venue for signing into law a bill defining and increasing the renewable portfolio standards (i.e., the percentage of a utility’s electricity sales that must be composed of renewable energy). In addition to the move for more renewable energy in Hawaii, this law calls for HNEI to perform studies for the Public Utilities Commission on the capability of utilities to achieve the new standards. HNEI’s Director, Rick Rocheleau, spoke on this subject at the recent NHA meeting in Los Angeles. The presentation received many compliments and the conference leaders felt that since it was so well received, they wanted him to submit his manuscript for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings. The document provides an excellent summary of the growing presence of hydrogen technologies in Hawaii. Most of the research and demonstration efforts are being spearheaded by HNEI.

Fuel cells offer the opportunity to replace the internal combustion engine with a clean, quiet, efficient, and environmentally sound alternative. Environmental benefits include the potential for zero-emissions in dense, urban neighborhoods, substantial reductions in noise levels with the use of quiet, electric drive systems, significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and the potential use of renewable sources of energy – solar, wind, and hydropower – to produce hydrogen fuel. AC Transit, with nearly $14 million in grants, and SunLine Transit of Thousand Palms, California, with grants totaling $4 million, are together initiating an internationally recognized fuel cell demonstration program. As members of the California Fuel Cell Partnership, the primary objective is to work in partnership with the private sector to develop and commercialize fuel cell technology for the transit industry.
Fuel cell buses are quiet, electrically propelled vehicles, environmentally friendly, and only emit distilled water exhaust from the tailpipe in the form of steam, which evaporates and does not adversely affect air quality.

Special Treatment: Fuel cell draws energy from waste
Alexandra Goho A team of environmental engineers at Pennsylvania State University has created a fuel cell that breaks down organic matter in wastewater and, in the process, generates small amounts of electricity. The researchers say this dual activity could significantly reduce the costs associated with current water treatment in industrialized countries and make such treatment more widely available in developing countries. POWER SLUDGE. As wastewater flows through this new type of fuel cell, microbes break down the organic matter and release electrons, which flow from negative electrodes to a central positive electrode.

Schindler/National Science Foundation The prototype fuel cell consists of a cylindrical Plexiglas chamber, 15 centimeters long and 6.5 cm wide, in which the researchers arranged eight graphite rods around a hollow carbon-and-platinum tube. The rods serve as negative electrodes, or anodes, and the tube serves as a positive electrode, or cathode. When the researchers pump a sample of wastewater from the local treatment plant into the fuel cell, bacteria in the water stick to the graphite rods.
