Natural Gas Fuel Cells
Technology for Improving Energy Efficiency While Reducing Environmental Emissions
Abstract
The natural gas fuel cell (NGFC) energy system is a simple, reliable way to improve natural gas utilization and efficiency. This technology converts natural gas into electricity to provide a quiet, clean, and highly efficient on-site electric generating system and thermal energy source that can reduce facility energy service costs by 20% to 40% over conventional energy service. The NGFC utilizes an alternative cogeneration technology for improving natural gas utilization and efficiency. It is an environmentally friendly fossil-fueled energy generator with cleaner emissions than the ambient air in some cities. NGFCs can serve effectively as an on-site energy supply to meet needs for base-load electricity, heat, and hot water, while local electric and natural gas utilities provide for energy demand beyond the NGFC capacity. Driving the hydrogen economy.
ADVERTISEMENT "There is an energy revolution happening that is similar to what we saw with the PC revolution," says Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends and author of The Hydrogen Economy. "Moore's Law has set in with fuel cells," he says, referring to the falling cost and increased efficiency of fuel cell technology. The first wave of fuel cell adoption is likely to happen with miniature, methanol-based fuel cells for laptops, tablet computers, handhelds, and cell phones. Such fuel cells promise longer life and ultimately lower expenses, because methanol costs next to nothing. Toshiba recently demonstrated a prototype of a direct methanol fuel cell that can power a notebook PC for 5 hours. Fed by a small cartridge of methanol, this type of cell works by converting chemical energy directly into electricity. The by-products are oxygen and water, which are recycled back into the cell. About the size of a notebook port replicator, the cell is neither as portable nor as long-lasting as consumers need, but it is a significant step. Toshiba plans to start selling it next year. Smaller players are also working furiously on their own micro fuel cells for notebooks. Neah Power Systems, with backing from Intel, has developed a silicon honeycomb design for the electrode of its direct methanol fuel cell. The design increases power density, allowing for a much smaller size than Toshiba's design. "In terms of all-day computing, we plan to release a fuel cell in 2005 or 2006 that can power a notebook for 8 hours," says Gregg Makuch, Neah's marketing director. But convincing a computer maker to outfit an entire line of notebooks with fuel cells is no simple task.

Shedding New Light on Fuel Cells
By Amit Asaravala Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1
02:00 AM Dec. 02, 2003 PT Chemists at the University of Massachusetts at Boston say they have discovered a way to double the efficiency of a solar-powered process used to generate hydrogen fuel. The breakthrough could clear the air of concerns over the environmental record of the auto industry's much-anticipated fuel-cell vehicles. Currently, the majority of hydrogen fuel is produced through steam reformation, a process that mixes steam with natural gas. Critics of fuel-cell technologies have argued that shifting from gasoline to a fuel created from natural gas will do little to help the environment, nor will it reduce U.S. dependence on fossil fuels.

Fuel Cells and Hydrogen
Electricity is an enormously important and versatile energy carrier. Unfortunately, traditional methods of producing it are messy and inefficient, and it can't be stored in large quantities.
RMI's team offers consulting services on integrating fuel cells into new products and services, commercialization strategies, and related issues. When used in concert, electricity and hydrogen form an ideal energy-carrier system. Electricity can be generated from intermittent renewable sources, and hydrogen can be safely stored. Fuel cells can then produce on-demand electrical energy to power your home, your laptop or your cell phone, and even power your car. For a variety of reasons (see: Why Hydrogen? ), hydrogen will displace fossil fuels as the blood of our future energy infrastructure. Fuel cells will play a critical role in this coming hydrogen economy. RMI is helping leading companies, policy-makers, and researchers worldwide to accelerate this clean-energy revolution on various fronts. Fuel Cells
Inside most fuel cells, hydrogen from a fuel tank and oxygen from the air combine to produce electricity and warm water. Fuel is not burned in this simple electrochemical process (see: How Do Fuel Cells Work?
Though fuel cells have been widely publicized in recent years, they are not new: the first one debuted in 1839. Fuel cells powered the 1960's Gemini spacecraft, continue to power the Space Shuttle, and have been used by NASA on many other space missions. Today, all major auto companies have fuel-cell powered vehicles in the works, and a nascent fuel cell industry is growing rapidly. While their operation is simple, fuel cells have historically been expensive to make. Until a few years ago these devices had to be assembled one at a time in the hands of Ph.D.s. Yet extensive research and development over the past few decades have promised the widespread use of fuel cells in the near future. Fuel cells still cost more today than conventional power sources. But more and more companies are choosing fuel cells for their dependability, fuel efficiency, and clean operation. To learn more about fuel cells as distributed energy resources, download

    Welcome to Fuel Cell Knowledge
This site presents information on the research, development and adoption of Sustainable Energy Systems based on fuel cells. The site focuses on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), which is the author's field of study.
The site is designed to present the growing body of knowledge on fuel cells efficiently and coherently. Introductory material is included under the "Fuel Cell Basics" menu (above), and there is plenty available elsewhere
There has been a tendency to consider fuel cell technologies as 'the solution' to problems with existing energy technologies, when in fact they are only one component of a sustainable energy system. This attitude has led to two problems: the marketing of fuel cells for applications for which they are not the most sustainable solution; and the public misunderstanding of the need for sustainable hydrogen (energy) production in order to realise the potential of fuel cells. To this end, the "Related Technogies" and "Commercialisation" menus aim to place fuel cells in a wider context.

What Is A Fuel Cell?
In principle, a fuel cell operates like a battery. Unlike a battery, a fuel cell does not run down or require recharging. It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes sandwiched around an electrolyte. Oxygen passes over one electrode and hydrogen over the other, generating electricity, water and heat. A fuel cell produces electricity. The fuel cell is similar to a battery. It produces electricity using chemicals . The chemicals are usually very simple, often just hydrogen and oxygen. In this case the hydrogen is the "fuel" that the fuel cell uses to make electricity. Another very important difference is that fuel cells do not run down like batteries. As long as the fuel and oxygen is supplied to the cell it will keep producing electricty for ever. The oxygen needed by a fuel cell is usually simply obtained from air.
