Fuel Cells
Hydrogen's potential use in fuel and energy applications includes powering vehicles, running turbines or fuel cells to produce electricity, and generating heat and electricity for buildings. The current focus is on hydrogen's use in fuel cells. power vehicles or to provide electricity and heat to buildings. The primary fuel cell technologies under development are: Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells
A phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) consists of an anode and a cathode made of a finely dispersed platinum catalyst on carbon paper, and a silicon carbide matrix that holds the phosphoric acid electrolyte. This is the most commercially developed type of fuel cell and is being used in hotels, hospitals, and office buildings. The phosphoric acid fuel cell can also be used in large vehicles, such as buses. Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
The proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell uses a fluorocarbon ion exchange with a polymeric membrane as the electrolyte. The PEM cell appears to be more adaptable to automobile use than the PAFC type of cell. These cells operate at relatively low temperatures and can vary their output to meet shifting power demands. These cells are the best candidates for light-duty vehicles, for buildings, and much smaller applications. Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) currently under development use a thin layer of zirconium oxide as a solid ceramic electrolyte, and include a lanthanum manganate cathode and a nickel-zirconia anode. This is a promising option for high-powered applications, such as industrial uses or central electricity generating stations.

Vendors While the concept of fuel cells has been around for more than 100 years, the first practical fuel cells were developed for the U.S. space program in the 1960s. The space program required an efficient, reliable, and compact energy source for the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft, and the fuel cell was a good fit. Today, NASA continues its reliance on fuel cells to power space shuttle vehicles. Because of technology improvements in recent years and significant investment by auto companies, utilities, NASA , and the military, fuel cells are now expected to have applications for distributed power generation within the next few years.

Driving the hydrogen economy. "There is an energy revolution happening that is similar to what we saw with the PC revolution," says Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends and author of The Hydrogen Economy. "Moore's Law has set in with fuel cells," he says, referring to the falling cost and increased efficiency of fuel cell technology. The first wave of fuel cell adoption is likely to happen with miniature, methanol-based fuel cells for laptops, tablet computers, handhelds, and cell phones. Such fuel cells promise longer life and ultimately lower expenses, because methanol costs next to nothing.

One reason the change is not noticeable yet is that much of it is being carried out at the regional level, by provincial and state governments rather than headline-grabbing national governments. ...Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of California set the tone by urging their counterparts to pledge their states to developing at least 30,000 megawatts of clean energy from sources such as wind power and photo-voltaics in the west by 2015, and to increase the efficiency of energy use by 20 per cent by 2020.

Fuel cells are devices used to produce electrical power, and are beginning to receive a large amount of public attention . This fact sheet is intended to provide an introduction into fuel cells, what they are, what they can do, why they're important, what the commercial implications of are and what we are doing in Nevada on fuel cells.
What is a fuel cell?
A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that produces electricity from a combined chemical reaction and electrical charge transport that occurs within the fuel cell. This is very similar to the way a battery produces electricity. However, unlike a battery, a fuel cell only produces electricity while fuel is supplied to it. The reaction is at relatively low temperatures, and no combustion takes place in the fuel cell. The primary fuel used in fuel cells is hydrogen. When hydrogen is supplied, a chemical reaction, between hydrogen and air produces electricity, pure water and some heat. The electrical power available is proportional to the rate of fuel flowing into the fuel cell, limited by the physical size of the fuel cell.
