Upon meeting with their leader, you are informed that previous visitors brought sweets and junk foods to the island. The natives are no longer interested in eating the fruits and vegetables found there. As a result, their health has deteriorated. They will need information about proper nutrition and a balanced diet. Your job as a "foodologist" is to create a brand new exciting recipe or presentation to help save the islanders.
The Task Working with your group, gather information about fruits and vegetables. You will investigate the following, to be used in a HyperStudio presentation or recipe cards with nutritional information, to be created in ClarisWorks:
  • What is the food pyramid and its importance to the islanders? What are vitamins, minerals and nutrients? Why are they necessary? Which fruits and vegetables contain them? What measurements are used in the food pyramid and recipes?

The Garden of Eden Raw Fruit and Vegetable Recipes > Customer Review #1: Good, but needs a proofreader

This book is a good, tasty collection of no muss, little fuss raw recipes. The author assumes you know how to make sprouts (although a brief recipe is included) and have a working ability to substitute for hard-to-find ingredients. Most of the recipes are tasty and work well. My main gripe is that some recipes, particularly those using garbonzos, are very unclear whether you are to soak only, soak and sprout, or what. Some editing/proofreading could have solved these problems. Otherwise, try them out. The "brown bag" lunch ideas alone are worth the cost of this little book, and the cookies are tasty.
The Garden of Eden Raw Fruit and Vegetable Recipes > Customer Review #2: Garden of Eden AFTER the snake Although I want to eat healthier, having a lunch of raw corn on the cob, spinach, pickling cucumber and sprouts isnt going to do much for my McDonalds appetite. Where do you get sunflower sprouts? What is cherimoya? Dried pulse? Many of the ingredients were not available. My grocer hadnt even heard of some of them. Very disappointing book

Ultimate Juicing : Delicious Recipes for Over 125 of the Best Fruit and Vegetable Juice Combinations > Customer Review #1: A Complete Guide that Doesnt Take Itself too Seriously!

Allow me to be bluntI dont buy into the whole health-craze notion that juicing is the silver bullet for ultimate physical health and spiritual awakening. Im just a no-frills, moderately healthy woman who wants to enjoy the luxury of fresh-squeezed juices in her own kitchen without having to pay a gourmet price for them. To that end, I splurged on a good but affordable juice extractor and bought this book to learn the basics of making homemade juices. As with everything I purchase online, I checked out other customers reviews of various juicing information and cookbooks beforehand, and Rodnitzkys book appeared to contain what I needed without too much fru-fru, "juicing will change your life" craziness.

What fruits and veggies to use and how to cook them
You can use almost any fruit or vegetable that you like to eat. Of course, it's best to keep the more acidic fruits, like citrus and pineapple until your baby is a little older. You should wait until your baby is 9 months old to introduce spinach, that's when their digestive system can handle the nitrates found in frozen and baby food spinach. As for cooking the fruits and vegetables in preparation for baby food, it's pretty basic. Peel the fruit or vegetable if necessary, then steam or cook in some other low-liquid way until tender. Sweet potatoes can be microwaved in their skins, then just scooped out. Some very soft fruits and vegetables may not need to be cooked at all. Bananas are just mash-and-serve, as is avocado. Always make sure you baby does well (ie. no allergies or stomach upset) with the food in question separately before serving it in combination with another food.
