Order Anura
Ranidae
Old World Tree Frogs

All frogs and toads make up this order and can be found on every continent except for the poles. The name Anura means "without tail" and that is a characteristic of the amphibians that make up this order. They have four legs, the front being shorter than the back. And, while they can walk on land, their primary means of locomotion is hopping. Male Anurans chirp to attract females and define territory. Eggs are laid either in water or in a moist spot on land and the larvae grows up in water. As larvae, they are primarily herbiverous. After metamorphosing into adults they are carnivorous and can eat pretty much anything they can get in their mouth.

FROG / TOAD FEATURES:
  • Michigan frog and toad breeding begins in late winter - early summer depending on the species. The males go to breeding sites (shallow water areas) and call the females. Males may fight over breeding sites. Fertilization of frog and toad eggs is strickly external in Michigan. All Michigan frogs and toads have a larva (tadpole) stage in their life cycle. Tadpoles mainly feed on algea but will also eat dead animals (including their dead brothers and sisters). Adult frogs and toads are carnivorus. They will eat animals that fall into their predatorial size range (in most cases this means insects, however a large bullfrog may eat another frog, a turtle, a snake, a rodent, or a bird). All frogs and toads absorb small amounts of their oxygen supply through their skin. Frogs and toads absorb water through their skin as well. Frogs and toads have poison glands in their skin to help deter predators.

http://www.threadnaught.net/~caleb/ukanura.html
FROGS AND TOADS IN THE UK Frogs and toads (anurans) are a well known group of amphibians. They have no tails as newts do, and their hind legs are elongated for jumping, and folded in a characteristic way when at rest. There is no scientific distinction between 'frogs' and 'toads'- 'toad' is generally used to describe a dry-skinned or warty animal, while 'frog' is reserved for those with smooth, moist skin, which are generally more fast-moving. Three species of these tailless amphibians are regarded as native to the UK- the common frog, common toad, and natterjack toad. A fourth species, the pool frog, is also thought to be native, though this is not universally accepted. COMMON FROG Rana temporaria Common frog- an unusually dark specimen. The common frog is the species most commonly encountered in the UK, and is often to be found in garden ponds. This species has a moist and smooth skin, which is usually a yellowish or brown colour. There is a dark 'mask' on each side of the head, behind the eyes. This frog moves by means of large hops or jumps. Common frogs reach a length of up to 8 cm total length. Common frogs breed in late winter or early spring. The male frog will grab the female in an embrace known as amplexus. The pair will remain in this embrace for several hours. The male's grip on the female's slippery skin is helped by his 'nuptial pads'- areas of rough skin on the 'thumbs' of the front legs. The pair produce a clump of frogspawn, which is a familiar sight in many ponds. Frogspawn consists of up to 2000 eggs, each consisting of a black embryo about 2mm in diameter, surrounded by a mass of protective jelly. This jelly swells on contact with the water, eventually becoming a sphere around 8mm in diameter. Tiny tadpoles develop from these embryos and will emerge within about two weeks, the exact time depending on temperature.

Set-up for Tree Frogs Tree frogs are simple to maintain, as long as your set up is right. A simple set up is easier to disinfect, and it should be disinfected once a week. Heating Never at any time, use heat rocks with amphibians! Those will cause deadly thermal burns! Water Nutrition Crickets are the main diet. They must be gut- loaded and dusted. Larger frog species will eat pinkies, feeder fish, and zoophobas. Variety if possible is best. Frog diets are not well researched and it is believed that an eye disease called Lipid Keratopathy that leads to blindness is caused by nutritional deficiencies. Wild caught insects such as June bugs, moths, grasshoppers and pill bugs that are not exposed to pesticides or herbicides may help alleviate the problem. Set-up For Horned Frogs Set up for this frog doesn't differ very much from the tree frog set up. Gravel is not a good substrate because they may swallow it. This would cause an intestinal blockage that will kill the frog. You can use a large plastic storage container for housing them. These guys can grow up to about a pound, so they are large as adults. Females are larger than males. In the wild they spend their lives buried under leaves or brush and wait for prey to walk by. This needs to be simulated in captivity.

Frogs and Toads
Two species of frogs and one species of toad are known in Alaska. These small amphibians are the spotted frog Rana pretiosa ), the wood frog Rana sylvatica ), and the western toad Bufo boreas
The spotted frog is rarely seen far from the water while the wood frog is frequently found away from water and in diverse habitats. The western toad is the only toad found in Alaska. The wood frog is the most widely distributed frog in Alaska. Individuals have been observed from southeastern Alaska to north of the Brooks Range, inhabiting diverse vegetation from grasslands to forest, muskeg, and tundra. This smooth-skinned frog is generally light brown or gray in color and has many pattern variations. A dark eye mask is usually evident, and undersurface color is uniformly cream white. A light stripe down the back is often present, and many northern individuals have dark spots on the dorsal surface. The darker coloration of northern frogs is thought to be important to heat economy by absorbing more solar energy. Adults may attain a length of 3 inches (7.6 cm). Text: Kevin Broderson

R.P. Lister
in " Of Frogs and Toads
The message is definitely green . . . . . . but it's not just for hardcore frogophiles. Of Frogs and Toads : Poetry and Short Prose About Amphibians, edited by Jill Carpenter, collects what 70 contemporary writers ranging from Pulitzer Prizewinners to a first-published author claim to have learned from a decidedly cold-blooded muse. Of Frogs and Toads explores everything from "frog storms" to the place of amphibians in fable and folklore. It is a mirth-filled celebration of warty creatures who are princes in disguise, as well as a lament for the precariousness of their existence in our modern world. Here also is a range of human encounters with amphibians: in the toilet (creating a plumbing problem), in a biology laboratory (flexing like a ballerina), even under a pot of geraniums (organizing their social order like a quadrille). Here are frogs the size of a bottle cap, with eyes as big as doorknobs, and a giant Cameroonian frog that hangs in the National Geographic Hall like an abandoned diver's suit.
