What is the difference between frogs and toads?
What is the difference between a frog and a toad? In most fairy tales frogs are portrayed as the animal you kiss to get the prince. Toads are portrayed negatively in the story, claiming you can get warts just by touching them. What sense can we make of this maddness?
Frogs and toads mostly differ in their portrayals in fairy tales. According to most fairy tales, if you kiss a frog you can turn him into a prince, whereas kissing a toad would result in warts appearing all over your body. The physical differences are not always so clear cut. Together frogs and toads comprise the largest group of amphibians. Both frogs and toads come into the world from eggs, hatching as tadpoles. These fish-like tadpoles experience a metamorphosis. During this period of change, a frog or toad sprouts legs and their fish-like tails disappear. Frogs and toads also have the ability to breathe through their skins, the lungs also undergo change during this metamorphosis period. bodyOffer(32035) Telling the difference between a frog and toad can be difficult. There are some basic guidelines to follow in identifying each species. A frog belongs to the class Rana and toads are in the Bufo class. Frogs tend to spend most of their time in water, whereas toads tend to be land dwellers. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. Toads are generally well camouflaged to blend in with their in environment; toads will likely appear as a mushroom or stone. Frogs in general are brighter in color.

Often, the area was flooded when there was heavy rain. Even when it rained lightly, puddles of water formed on the ground. And in the night, frogs and toads would call loudly. Sometimes their "chorus" could be quite deafening. One frog species, the Banded Bullfrog, Kaloula pulchra (family Microhylidae), was plentiful then. There seem to be fewer of them around now. I had difficulty finding them during the occasional trips back to my hometown. The call of the males of this species has been described as being like the "bellow of cattle". This frog would puff itself up when disturbed. In dry conditions, the frog would hunker down under logs or rocks and perhaps it could even bury itself in the ground. (Note: The frog shown here is not the Banded Bullfrog, but the Cooper-cheeked Frog. The photos shown here were taken in various localities.)

    Introduction:
After reading "Frog and Toad All Year" by Arnold Lobel , we have learned that Frog and Toad are two very different characters. Even though they have different ways of handling problems, making decisions, and having fun, they still have enough things in common to help them stay great friends! Have you ever wondered what makes real frogs and toads different, or in what ways they are alike? In this WebQuest, you will be working to discover those differences and similarities.

American toads are very common in Ohio. They have either one, two, or three warts in the dark spots on their backs. American toads spend the spring breeding in shallow ponds. When these toads leave the ponds, they leave behind long strands of eggs. One female American Toad can lay as many as 12,000 eggs. Soon after these eggs are hatched, little black tadpoles emerge and soon turn into tiny toads. Unlike most animals, this toad does not drink water. Instead it absorbs water through its skin. This frog is considered to be the largest frog in North America. The bullfrog's "jug-o'-rum" sound can be heard throughout Ohio's, marshes, and streams from late April through late summer. During their breeding season, they get very aggressive and become very protective over their territory. (Denny, 25)

    74. Frogs And Toads Of The Chicago Region
Amphibian Links, frogs and toads of the Chicago Region by Ellin Beltz. by Ken Mierzwa. Translations of the scientific names of frogs and toads by Ellin Beltz.
    http://ebeltz.net/niftylinks/amphibians/ourfrogs.html
Frogs and Toads of the Chicago Region by Ellin Beltz
The Chicago Region includes all counties within a 75-mile radius of downtown Chicago and covers parts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Before 1800, the region was a highly diverse series of environments including prairie, oak savanna, sand areas, eastern forest, and marshes like those on the lake plain and near the Kankakee River.
Each habitat type supported particular groups of amphibians at different times in its formation. This "snapshot in time" is of approximately the early 1800s. A similar map could be made today, however, much of the area has been urbanized and developed.
Understanding the relationship between frogs and their environment reveals a fascinating story of the changes in the Chicago Region over the past 10,000 years. By about 13,000 years before the present, glacial ice which formerly covered the region had retreated. The environment then was a wild place. Giant lakes and huge floods helped sculpt the features left behind by the glacier while plants and animals attempted to gain a toehold in the rapidly changing environment.
When the first frog arrived in the region is not known, but we do know that they migrated northwards from unglaciated areas, called "refugia," in the southern and southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico.

    Wildlife Conservation Strategy

There are more than 3400 species of frogs and toads worldwide, with the majority living in the humid tropics. Michigan can boast only 13 species, but they are an important part of the State's wildlife heritage. Classification Frogs and toads, along with the salamanders, are members of the class Amphibia. Amphibians are characterized by a life cycle which begins with an unshelled egg laid in water, the egg hatches into a fish like, gill breathing larva (called a tadpole or polliwog in frogs and toads), followed by the transformation of the larva into an adult. During this transformation, the larva gradually develops legs, lungs, and other modifications for life as an air breathing adult capable of living on land. Sometimes this transformation occurs inside the egg, with the animal hatching out as an “adult,” but all of Michigan's frogs and toads, have a typical aquatic (water living) tadpole stage. Most amphibians have rather thin skins through which they can "breathe" and absorb or lose water. Because of this, they prefer to live in moist or wet habitats.

    Wildlife Conservation Strategy

Although most of Michigan's amphibians are small and secretive, with just a little effort you can create a haven for them in your own yard. Here are a few suggestions:
    • Leave some leaf litter under your trees, shrubs and in the garden.
Encourage native ground cover, grasses and wildflowers; a finely manicured lawn is attractive to people but not to most frogs and toads or other wildlife.
Build a burrow for toads for them to hide. Call the Wildlife Division, Natural Heritage Program for plans at (517) 373-1263.
Build a shallow pond that includes natural pond vegetation and rocks in and around. For more details call the number above.
Erect a toad light. A toad light is a light that is set no higher than 3 feet and is placed near a border between a garden or rockery and a lawn area. The light attracts insects on which the toads feed at night.
Try to discourage children and others from capturing and caging frogs and toads in your yard and elsewhere.
Minimize the use of pesticides and fertilizers in the yard.
