    Combinatorial Games
Mathematicians use the words "game theory" in two different senses. The more common sense of the word includes things like the Prisoner's Dilemma, poker, the New York Stock Exchange, or other "imperfect-information" games. Research in this type of game theory makes a lots of money for a lot of people, and has even resulted in a few Nobel prizes. An introductory sketch is available at Drexel University. Those aren't the kind of mathematical games I like. Combinatorial game theory tries to analyze the outcomes of "perfect-information" games like Nim and Tic-tac-toe. More difficult real-world examples are Hex, Reversi, Mancala, Checkers, Chess, Shogi, and Go. Nancy Casey has a

American bullfrogs are the largest native frogs in the U.S. They typically range from 3.5 - 6 inches long. They are green to brown in color and are characterized by a ridge curving from behind the eye around the tympanum (the "ears"). They will eat almost any living creature they can fit into their mouths. Females lay 1000 - 5000 eggs in a thick surface film. Metamorphosis of tadpoles takes 1 - 2 years. The American bullfrog requires 2 - 3 additional years to reach maturity. Habitat: American bullfrogs live in medium to large permanent bodies of water (lakes or ponds) throughout Tennessee. The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the World Wide Web change continuously. It is advisable that teachers review all links before introducing CyberGuides to students.
  • This supplemental unit provides Internet resources for K-3 students to learn interesting facts about frogs and toads. They will also focus on friendship, the central theme of Frog and Toad are Friends . Students will draw and write about a special friend. As a culminating activity they will make a new friend and e-mail a message just like Frog wrote a letter to Toad. Keypals will be from another part of the United States or even another country. You will choose a class of students from 1,700 participating classrooms.

http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/conmag/1996/decoi/3.html
"It's Raining Frogs and Toads!" by Beverley Billings Fenn illustrated by David Besenger Sound impossible? Some people claim to have seen it happen. What if you were sitting in front of the television watching the nightly news, and the weather forecaster came on. "Good evening," he says. "Tonight's weather will be clear and cool. Tomorrow it will rain frogs and toads." He must be playing a joke, you think, or he's made a goofy mistake. After all, frogs and toads can't fall out of the sky. That's impossible! But the truth is that while frog and toad rainstorms are extremely rare, they can actually happen. One of these rare events is described in the August 3, 1883 edition of the Decatur Daily Republican. "Cairo, Illinois, August 3 - Early yesterday morning the decks of the steamers Success and Elliot, moored at the Mississippi levee, were observed to be literally covered with small green frogs about an inch in length, which came down with a drenching rain which prevailed during the night. Spars, lines, trees and fences were literally alive with the slimy things, while the lights from the watchmen's lanterns were obscured by the singular visitation. The phenomenon, while not entirely unknown, has never been explained, and is causing considerable comment." Another report about one of these bizarre events appeared in Scientific American magazine, dated July 12, 1873. It states, "A shower of frogs, which darkened the air and covered the ground for a long distance, is the reported result of a recent rainstorm at Kansas City, Missouri." Here is an event which no forecaster predicted ahead of time. And just think - it took place right here in Missouri.

Introduction
Salientia (Anura) includes frogs, toads and their close fossil relatives. The closest living relatives of the Salientia are the other amphibians, salamanders and caecilians. Frogs outnumber both of these groups substantially; there are 162 living species of caecilians, 352 living salamanders, and 3438 species of frogs (Duellman and Trueb, 1986). The earliest known salientian is Triadobatrachus massinoti, from the Early Triassic of Madagascar. This "proto-frog" is about 250 million years old. We call it that because it had not yet quite evolved the combination of features that we now think of as being associated with frogs. For more information see Triadobatrachus massinoti The earliest "true" frog is Vieraella herbsti , from the Early Jurassic era (188-213 my). Thus, perfectly respectable frogs were around just before most of the major groups of dinosaurs had appeared.

STERN'S SPLENDORS OF THE RAIN FOREST MICHIGAN, USA Home Page Bromeliads and orchids are the floral aristocrats of the rain forest. They display an incredible range of form and size and, when they bloom, an impressive palette of extraordinary colors. These plants are native to the tropical and subtropical areas of the Americas, the majority indigenous to South America. Most of them grow as air plants on the trunks and branches of trees. Some species wrap their roots around porous rocks, while others, such as the pineapple and "earth stars," grow in the soil. To obtain unusual and rare species, I recommend joining plant societies. These organizations promote plant and seed exchanges and provide information on the culture of these plants. PHOTO GALLERY VISIT: Orchids Tillandsias Bromeliads Greenhouse ... Toads And Frogs Puzzle
The Toads And Frogs Puzzle is also known under the names of Hares and Tortoise and Sheep and Goats . With no animals at hand, it can be played with two kinds of coins. The following names still reflect on the essence of the activity: Hop, Skip, Jump and Traffic Jam N frogs are placed on N successive positions on the left of a string of squares; M toads occupy M rightmost squares. On the whole, there are M + N + 1 squares, so that just one square remains unoccupied. Frogs only move rightward; toads move leftward. Every move is either a S lide to the nearby square or a J ump over one position, which is allowed only if the latter is occupied by a fellow of a different kind. In any case, no two animals are allowed in the same square. The goal is to move toads into M leftmost positions and the frogs into N rightmost positions. The number of toads and frogs can change between 1 and 5. Originally, N = M = 3. These are shown just above the string of squares. To change the values, click on either a little off its center line. For every combination of N and M, the puzzle has two solutions: one can start either towards right or left. In both cases, the total number of moves is

Toads And Frogs Puzzle
in 2D
Here's a 2-dimensional variant of the Toads and Frogs puzzle. The rules are virtually identical. Frogs only move rightward or downward, toads can only move leftward and upward. A piece can jump over another piece of a different kind, provided the square on which it lands is empty. The goal of the puzzle of course is to cause frogs and toads to swap their positions.

  • W.W.Rouse Ball and H.S.M.Coxeter, Mathematical Recreations and Essays , Dover, 1987 Alexander Bogomolny The puzzle is solved by the following observation. The middle vertical column may be looked at as a simple 1-dimensional puzzle. In the course of a successful solution of that puzzle, the empty square will eventually move over all squares in that column. (This is because all pieces will have to be moved from their original positions.) The row in which the empty square is located may be looked at as another 1-dimensional puzzle, this time horizontal. The process of solution of the vertical puzzle serves as an index into a sequence of horizontal puzzles that are solved successively. Alexander Bogomolny
