SIR HUMPHREY GILBERT
Although Sir Humphrey Gilbert was not involved directly in the Roanoke voyages, both he and members of his family participated in early colonization efforts, and Gilbert decisively influenced his half-brother Sir Walter Ralegh, the leading proponent of the Roanoke Island colonies. Born about 1539, Gilbert was the second son of Otho Gilbert and Katherine Champernowne. Compton Castle, the family seat, was then held by Otho's elder brother John; thus it was at Greenway on the River Dart, that John, Humphrey, Adrian and Elizabeth Gilbert were born. All four children were minors when their father died in 1547. Their mother then married Walter Ralegh the elder, and bore two more sons and one daughterWalter, Carew, and Margaret Ralegh. Educated at Eton and at Oxford, Humphrey Gilbert also spent time in the household of Princess Elizabeth, who later became Queen Elizabeth. In 1562-63, he served under the Earl of Warwick at Le Havre and was wounded during the siege. Early interested in exploration, in 1566 he prepared A Discourcs of a Discoveries for a new Passage to Cataia [China] in which he urged the queen to seek a Northwest Passage to China because the known routes were controlled by the Spanish and the Portuguese. Both Martin Frobisher and John Davys were inspired by this work. Gilbert invested in Frobisher's 1576 voyage and Davys named Gilbert Sound, near Greenland, in his honor.

Martin Frobisher Personal Backgrond Passage to the New World Second Voyage Later Life ... Bibliography
Martin Frobisher was an English navigator and explorer. He was one of the first English to search for the Northwest passage to India and Asia. Today, he is considered to be one of the greatest seamen of the age of Queen Elizabeth I. He was very courageous and resourceful; sometimes he was also so strict that captains of ships were sometimes unwilling to work with him.
Personal Background:
In 1535, Martin Frobisher was born in Altofts, Yorkshire. His father died when he was young. After that, his mother sent him to live with his uncle who was a merchant in London. He spent a lot of his childhood working as a trader for him. School was never very important to him; he spent most of his life barely literate. As a kid he was considered violent and undisciplined, but very ambitious. So, he started privateering as a teen and gave up trading.
Passage to the New World:
In 1576, Frobisher set off looking for his riches. He had about 39 men and three small ships, averaging about 25 tons each. Their names were the Gabriel, the Michael and a pinnace, which were all well supplied. Some of the supplies included navigational instruments and books.
The trip went badly from the start. The smallest ship collided with another and they were delayed until repairs were made. Later, a storm came up and one of the ships disappeared. When they reached Greenland, one of the ships turned back. Another hardship was the cold, ice, and freezing winds. Still, Frobisher went on and discovered a bay on Baffin Island. He named it Frobisher Bay after himself. He continued onward, thinking that this was the entrance to the Northwest passage.

8th Grade Explorers of the New World Projects The 8th Grade Social Studies class studied the early explorers who came to America from various other countries. Their web projects reflect the research they conducted into the personal background, goals, ships and supplies, route, hardships encountered, time frame and results. Using AppleWorks, students designed and constructed their web pages. In doing this, students reviewed basic HTML commands they learned as 7th graders. These web sites feature the results of the research and at least one graphic of the explorer. Students worked in pairs, sharing the research and web page responsibilities. Marquette and Joliet

Captain Pedro Menendez de Aviles (Feb. 15, 1519-Sept. 17, 1574) was a brutal Spanish sailor, soldier, explorer, and conquistador. The King of Spain sent Aviles to Florida in the New World, to start a Spanish settlement (St. Augustine, in northeastern Florida), and to decimate a nearby French settlement (Fort Caroline). For more information on De Aviles, click here DE FUCA, JUAN Juan de Fuca (15-1601?) was a Greek navigator who sailed for Spain under a Spanish name; his original name was Apostolos Valerianos. De Fuca sailed up the western coast of North America from Mexico to Vancouver Island in 1592, looking for a passage from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. He was perhaps the first European to see this area. He sailed through the Strait of Juan de Fuca (which was named for him in 1725) and believed it to be the beginning of a route to the Atlantic Ocean (it is not). This strait connects the Pacific Ocean to the Puget Sound and the Georgia Strait, between the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state, USA, and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. After sailing back to Acapulco, Mexico, de Fuca was not rewarded by Spain for his journey, and his discovery of the strait was not entirely believed until Captain Vancouver retraced de Fuca's route 200 years later. After this journey, de Fuca returned to Greece.

Thanks Jan.......I'm sure you're busy enough these days without worrying about our assignments. See you tomorrow night. Jill Introduction Task Resources Process ... Evaluation Introduction The once blue sky has turned a dirty shade of gray. The wind begins to howl. The expansive ocean around you heaves and boils. Your small wooden ship groans as large waves break over its bow. Storms at sea were just one of many risks early explorers faced as they set out against the breaking waves of their own shore, and sailed toward distant and unknown lands. The millennium is a time to retell, relate and reflect on the past. What better way to achieve this goal than to hold a reunion, An Early Explorer Reunion. We will invite the early explorers to an unforgettable event filled with tales and glory. We will have a chance to meet these wonderful men face to face and to discover the stories they have kept with them for so many years. The Task Early explorers plotted their courses carefully on navigational charts. Captains and others on board also kept logs or diaries during their journeys. Your team task is to investigate three early expeditions to the New World. You will explore web sites containing information and graphics about the life of an early explorer. You will be asked to find specific information dealing with the expeditions of three explorers. This information will help you put yourself in the shoes of the explorers. Through the eyes of your explorer you will be asked to keep a daily log of your findings. You will write a Readers Theatre script of a conversation between the reunion host and the three explorers and present this memorable event to the class.

Martin Frobisher by Daniel Martin Frobisher Biographical Facts Martin Frobisher was born in 1535 but people are not quite when he was actually born but it was around 1535. Martin Frobisher died in 1594. Even though he only lived to the age of about 59 he did complete alot in his life. When he was a young child he did sail in ships and went out to sea. It said in a book that he was killed of a bad wound but I am not so sure about that. Major Achievements Martin was very famous for his voyages. He only had three voyage but they were very good. The reason they were good because he discoverd what is now called Frobisher bay. He had his first voyage in 1576 his second in 1577 and his third in 1578. Martin was knighted. He was knighted by the queen of england. The reason he was knighted was so he could help defeat the spanish armada. Country The reason that the voyages were made so that they could mine these black rocks wich they thought contained gold. They were also done so Martin could try and find a passage to China. Martin thought the first inuits they met were chinese. The country they found there was very cold. The first expidition was not so they could mine the black rock but during the first expidition they found the black rocks.

English men and women of the sixteenth century experienced an unprecedented increase in knowledge of the world beyond their island. Religious persecution at home compelled a substantial number of both Catholics and Protestants to live abroad; wealthy gentlemen (and, in at least a few cases, ladies) traveled in France and Italy to view the famous cultural monuments; merchants published accounts of distant lands like Turkey, Morocco, Egypt, and Russia; and military and trading ventures took English ships to still more distant shores. In 1496, a Venetian tradesman living in Bristol, John Cabot, was granted a license by Henry VII to sail on a voyage of exploration, and with his son Sebastian discovered Newfoundland and Nova Scotia; in 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert returned to Newfoundland to try to establish a colony there. The Elizabethan age saw remarkable feats of seamanship and reconnaissance. On his ship the
