Our Paradise: The Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 228 Words Author : Photographed by Mark Downey; written by Christopher Baker
Located 750 miles northeast of Tahiti, the Marquesas were the final stop for the French painter Paul Gauguin in his search for an untamed place. Gauguin came in 1901 hoping to light a final fire to his imagination on islands reputedly still inhabited by "savages" and cannibals. He was sorely dismayed to find that a culture once acclaimed by Capt. James Cook as the most artistically refined in the world had been overwhelmed by missionary influences so that Jehovah might triumph over the local tikis (idols).
Gauguin spent his last two years painting on Hiva Oa and is buried in a now-overgrown cemetery near Atuona. The Belgian singer and composer Jacques Brel lies a few feet away, buried on the island that he called "my paradise."

Tahiti and her Islands (French Polynesia)
Tahiti and Her Islands comprise an area officially known as French Polynesia, which is an overseas territory of France. The 188 islands are scattered over four million square kilometers (one and a half million sq. miles) of ocean in the eastern South Pacific. The capital city Papeete is located on Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia. Tahiti is located only 7 1/2 hours by air from Los Angeles in the same time zone as Hawaii. Cooled by the gentle breezes of the Pacific, the climate in French Polynesia is sunny and pleasant. Roughly speaking, there are two seasons: from November through May the climate is warmer and humid, while April through October is cooler and drier. Most of the rain falls during the warmer season, but there are also many lovely sunny days during these months, with refreshing trade winds. HUMAN PALAEOECOLOGY IN THE MARQUESAS ISLANDS, FRENCH POLYNESIA (With Dr. Melinda Allen, University of Auckland and Dr. John Flenley, Massey University, New Zealand) Funded by The National Geographic Society
As the foregoing emphasizes, the coral reef of Anaho was an important resource in the past. To better understand this geographic feature and its economic resources, Aswani will carry out dive surveys along multiple transects across the reef platform. Local fishers will be interviewed to gather information on marine resources along the north-to-eastern coast generally and to collect data on traditional fishing practices. Comparison of this baseline information with the archaeological data will allow for reconstruction of the reef's biotic history and for an evaluation of human impact on reef resources. Aswani brings to this study over a decade of research into traditional marine fisheries in the Solomon Islands, including aspects of technology, marine tenure and conservation (e.g., Aswani 1998, 1999).
