I found the very idea of a population explosion delightful after such a long spell in the enforced hermitage of Zeke , and as we approached the city lights, the smell of thousands of bodies and their excretions drifted across the tide. I instantly recognised it, a combination of exhaust, sewage and sweat, and realised that I've spent most of my life living in this smell, so much so that I've also spent most of my life not noticing it. Mangareva reminded me that healthy earth and trees smell; Papeete reminded me that humans smell too. I revelled in it. But Papeete, despite my initial euphoria at encountering a city, wasn't that flash. It's an intriguing combination of French culture, Polynesian flair and tropical weather, but it's a pretty smelly and dirty place. As a place to visit it's interesting, but only that, and the landscape around the city - Tahiti with its high mountains and Moorea, the neighbouring island, with its jagged peaks - is picturesque but no great shakes after New Zealand, which has a similar ruggedness to it, but much more power. Papeete Town Hall The quay was an interesting place to observe the oddities of Papeete, like the huge Club Med ships that frequent the Society Islands, full of ignorant holidaymakers who believe the huge sails on those boats actually push the things along (they're engine driven, with four huge gibs stuck out to make them look good when sailing).

Come to think of it, it's pretty damn hard for me to sit here on the deck of Zeke and describe how beautiful this paradise is, because however I rearrange phrases like 'stunning coral reef', 'striking volcanic peaks', 'palm-fringed beaches', 'deep turquoise water', 'sparkling sunshine', 'cloudless skies', 'gently lapping water', 'cool sea breezes', 'sweet and succulent fruit', 'hot white sand', 'unspoilt and uninhabited' and 'refreshing swimming', you'll still not understand how amazing this paradise really is. The first step is to understand that paradise has nothing to do with what you see in the tourist brochures - cocktail bars, crowded beaches and only two weeks in which to cram a sun tan, three James Clavell novels and at least one cultural experience - so it's not all bumming around on the beach. This is the real thing, and we're not tourists, we're living here. This became really apparent when we went for the beach barbecue experience, an off-the-cuff decision that simply isn't possible in places like Tahiti. In thanks for hosting the

Taking a stand in Polynesia
Refusing to wear anything but traditional dress is Tahitian native Clement Pito's way of protesting what he calls French occupation of his land. Tahiti and its Polynesian neighbors have long been prizes of colonizing nations. Tahiti has been under French control since 1842 and a French colony since 1880. Its neighbors share a similar history. But Tahitians say it is not their land that is in danger it is their culture. The French language, French culture and French merchandise are everywhere you look in Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia on Tahiti giving it an atmosphere and appearance of a French provincial town, with palm trees. In 1767, when British sailors became the first Europeans to drop anchor in Matavai Bay, they were greeted by people whose culture was completely different from their own. Each ship returned to Europe with amazing stories of feasting and dancing, and of beautiful, exotic people. The stories inspired artists and writers with the philosophical ideal of the "noble savage."

History and Culture of French Polynesia M ost Polynesian cultures lived near the ocean and never traveled very far inland. There are, however, many facinating ruins on the island of Moorea dating back to the thirteenth century A.D. which are inland. These ruins are generally known as marae. The inland tribes abandoned their land and moved to the coast when missionaries arrive at the beginning of the nineteenth century. C aptain Cook was the first westerner to see Tahiti and Moorea in 1774. He estimated the population of Tahiti to be around two hundred thousand. While he was here he saw a flotilla of two-hundred war canoes with about ten thousand warriors set out for Moorea. In 1777 he returned to discover that the assault had been unsuccessful. Chief Mahine of the Moorea clan Marama allowed him to drop anchor in what is now known as Cook's Bay. W e visited the Marae Ahu o Mahine on Moorea. No one knows the original name as it is lost in history but local tradition names it after the great Chief Mahine who ruled the area at the time of Captian Cook's voyages.
Marae Ahu o Mahine M arae were open air sancuaries that were used as social, political, and commercial gathering points for the Polynesians. New maraes were built around the stones of older marae or stones carried in from other marae.

It's a beautiful little book with gorgeous pictures of people and places. Unfortunately, the food and hotel guide is minimal; this could be due to the size of the islands, but I feel this book is best suited for those who want to know more about the history and culture of Tahiti (hence why it's a publication in conjunction with the Discovery Channel). If culture and history are what you're looking for, this little book does a great job.

Pros
Interesting culture, beautiful island
Cons Not as good as other islands for snorkeling and beaches Full Review Tahiti - just the word brings up images of shimmering white sand beaches and palm trees in a perfect tropical paradise. I visited Tahiti while on a South Pacific cruise and I enjoyed Tahiti a lot, although I'd recommend some of the other islands more highly for their beaches and their beauty. (I wrote a review on the cruise - look in my profile if you're interested) Tahiti is about an 8 hour flight from Los Angeles. To find Tahiti on a globe or atlas, find Hawaii. Look south from Hawaii to the equator. Next look directly south again about the same distance and there is Tahiti and the rest of the Society Islands. It is fairly expensive to visit Tahiti and the South Pacific. Resort stays can go for $500-$1000 per night (food not included). Simple "burger" meals can cost $12.00 and higher. It is understandable, as these small islands have to import so much from far away that the cost is high. Gasoline is very expensive and purchased by the liter. I don't recall exactly, but we put in enough to drive about 50 miles and it cost about $12.00. I found the most economical way to see the islands was a package cruise where your room and board is included.

Levy Average review score: Sex, Self and Society in the South Seas World War II had relatively little influence on the culture of Tahiti and the surrounding Society Islands of the South Pacific, unlike its effect on much of Melanesia and Micronesia, further west and north. Rather, major changes began in the early 1960s, when France decided to conduct nuclear tests in the area. This decision, with massive transfers of money, technology, and personnel, had "an explosive effect" on Tahitian culture. Levy conducted the research for this book just as the new period was opening, from 1961 to 1964. Thus, we can probably say that no matter how good it is, TAHITIANS is now a historical document. Nevertheless it is an excellent psycho-portrait of a people at a certain point in history, a portrait that utilizes earlier histories and descriptions from the moment of European contact in 1767. I have reviewed another book in this field for amazon.com-"All the Mothers are One" by Stanley Kurtz about India. Kurtz' book is entirely based on analysis of other writers' theories and building some new ones. He did no field work himself. Levy's book, written entirely on extensive field work and interviews, is just the opposite, yet both are extremely useful works for students wishing to delve further into psychological studies of other cultures. Teachers looking for good books to use in courses touching on psychological anthropology or Pacific Studies have come to the right place. TAHITIANS is an overlooked classic that deserves to be read by a much wider audience than has been the case.

The Tropics of Old France! The islands of French Polynesia are a selection of volcanic islands and atolls strewn across the eastern South Pacific. These islands have allured, inspired and enamoured visitors since the time the islands were first discovered. Visiting these islands is a special The 118 islands of French Polynesia were born from volcanoes some 20 million years ago. The islands in the Society, Marquesas, Austral and Gambier Island groups remained high islands, while the islands of the Tuamotu Islands group became atolls. Atolls are islands that have long since sunk below the ocean surface, leaving only the barrier reef. The total land area of the islands is equivalent to the total area of Europe. The remoteness of the islands of Polynesia kept the people insulated from the rest of the world until European world travel began in the 1700's. Polynesian origins are believed to be in the area of Southeast Asia, more precisely the eastern are of Indonesia or the Phillipines some 4,000 years ago. The early Polynesians were master navigators. Their migrations took them through Melanesia to the eastern edge of Polynesia. The Polynesians settled in Polynesia between 1000 BC and 1000 AD. Polynesia is roughly described as the "triangle" with the northern point in the islands of Hawai'i, the southeast at Easter Island, and to the southwest at New Zealand.
