The People

The 1988 population census found a total of about 190,000 people in French Polynesia. However the criteria used for defining the racial groups can only approximate a breakdown of: 70% Polynesian, 12% European, 10% Polynesian/European, five per-cent Chinese, and three percent Polynesian/Chinese. All are French citizens. The 1988 population figures for the five administrative subdivisions are Windward Islands 140,341, Leeward Islands 22,232, Austral Islands 6,500, Tuamotu/Gambier Islands 12,374, Marquesas Islands 7,358. About 70% of the total population lives on Tahiti. The indigenous people of Tahiti-Polynesia are the maohi or Eastern Polynesians (as opposed to the Western Polynesians in Samoa and Tonga). Racial intermariages are commun and many Tahitians can claim French, Chinese, American and Polynesian ancestry. This accounts for the physical beauty of the inhabitants and the total abscence of racial prejudice, either from the Europeans or the Tahitians. Education
Formal education is mandatory in Tahiti for every child to the age of 14. Primary education begins at age five, and continues to the age of 12, when children begin secondary education.

French Polynesia is easily the most expensive destination in the South Pacific. Tipping is not encouraged and contrary to Polynesian culture. Most credit cards and travellers cheques are readily accepted at hotels and there are ATM machines around the main island of French Polynesia and on Moorea. Currency is the Cour de Franc Pacifique (CFP).

Holidays Guide
French Polynesia holidays are expensive and vastly over-rated compared to its South Pacific neighbours making it our least favourite South Pacific destination. Many of the islands are extremely commercialised (particularly Bora Bora), extremely expensive, the traditional culture has all but vanished (except on the Marquesas and Austral Islands where it is very rich indeed) and being a French imperialistic outpost, its many French expatriate settlers are mostly arrogant and unfriendly especially if you don't speak their language - far from what the glossy brochures of the travel agents would have you believe. In fact, there is little to attract the tourist to French Polynesia except for those who are prepared to explore the vast and remote Marquesas Islands where Paul Gauguin himself found the most peaceful and beautiful, or the equally stunning and remote Austral Islands.
There are of course a couple of exceptions - sailing is fantastic and if you're looking for a commercial cruise, then French Polynesia offers great opportunities with its stunning mountain landscapes. The only other reason to visit French Polynesia is if you are looking for an upmarket romantic escape, staying in an over water bungalow with fantastic lagoon views, with great French cuisine, and preferably on a small uninhabited island cut off from the world - but then, in reality, you're not in French Polynesia at all.

30. Traveling In French Polynesia
for the way its people sing—their purposefully atonal sound is perhaps one of thelast vestiges of precontact religion and culture left in french polynesia.
http://www.grandtimes.com/French_Polynesia.html
Traveling in French Polynesia WHERE VACATION MEETS ADVENTURE by Robert F. Kay Choosing where to go in French Polynesia is akin to perusing the menu at a five-star restaurant. There are so many places to visit, it’s really a tough call. Each of the five major island groups has its own distinctive attractions. The main thing is to get out of Papeete and either spend time in one of Tahiti’s outer districts or visit one of the outer islands. Only in Tahiti’s countryside or on an outer island are you likely to experience the pace and hospitality of genuine French Polynesia. My personal favorites in the Society Group (which includes the Windward and Leeward Islands) are Moorea, Huahine and Maupiti. If you can, you should also make a point of visiting at least one island in the Tuamotu Group so that you can experience an atoll, which is entirely different from a high island. Among these islands you might consider one of the lesser visited atolls such as Tikehau, Takaroa, Mataiva or Fakarava. If you have the time and the budget, at least one of the Marquesas Islands should also be on your itinerary. Remote and seldom visited by tourists, their precipitous terrain is absolutely spectacular. I like Nuku Hiva, but any island in the Marquesas Group is worth seeing. Society Group Because of its proximity to Tahiti, Moorea has become a “suburb” of Papeete. The island is dramatically beautiful, with sharp serrated peaks that command deep cleft valleys. The pace is slower than Tahiti, it’s less congested with cars, and it has an abundance of good beaches—many more than Tahiti.

Employment levels in pearl culture in French Polynesia: a correction
Dear Sir, Almost all pearl farms are located in the Tuamotu and Gambier island groups that only had 15,370 inhabitants at the time of the 1996 census. The labour force represents about 42% of this population, i.e. 6427 people, from which must be deducted all those who do not making a living from pearl culture as not all of the islands in these groups are suitable for this industry. It is generally estimated that the number of pearl culture-related jobs is between 3000 and 4000. Your estimate seems to have been extrapolated from a 1989 figure to which you applied the production growth rate, but it seems that increased production was the result of very large pearl farms using increasingly modern methods which make possible scale economies and significant increases in productivity. Family production, which is more job-intensive, accounts for only 10 to 20% of total production. It certainly is true that pearl culture has led to spectacular repopulating of these island groups. Between 1988 and 1996, the population increased 106% on Apataki, 80% on Arutua, 30% on Kaukura, 88% on Fakarava, 191% on Kauhei, 75% in the Gambier Islands, 57% on Makemo, 132% on Ahe, 79% on Manihi, 44% on Makatea, and 46% on Rangiroa. These figures, which are themselves remarkable, demonstrate the benefits of pearl culture for the islands concerned. But they only involve a small part of French Polynesia and I do not believe that indirect jobs are on the scale you suggest as storage and marketing of this lightweight product require a much less elaborate infrastructure and less manpower than is needed for the tuna industry.

:: The Project :: Moorea 2003 - Tupapaurau Channel The Channel of the Many Ghosts (Tupapaurau) The quick setup of this campaign was triggered by the discovery of many shaped stone objects near the Tupapaurau Channel (The Channel of the Many Ghosts) on Moorea Na Too E Va'u No Aimeho Nui
In response to a request made by Mrs. Louise Peltzer, Minister of Culture, Higher Education and Research in French Polynesia, Mr. Robert Veccella, Head of the GRAN branch in Tahiti , agreed to manage a comprehensive excavation campaign on the site.
The significance of the excavation area is due to its dimensions (250 by 50 meters) and to the number of the objects it holds, which has been estimated to several hundreds.
Those objects have been described in situ by the GRAN Team in Polynesia, and are identified as : anchors, plummet sinkers for fishing lines or nets, adzes, pestles, axle shaped stones, and maybe standing stones and seats which were used in marae (Polynesian places of worship). Some other stone types could possibly be found on the site.

CULTURE Sculpture
Sculpture is one of the major arts of French Polynesia. Initially, pieces of art were produced on all 5 archipelagos. Nowadays, most sculptures you will find along your trip are produced in the Marquesas islands. Polynesia sculpture is characterised by some kind of mystical power that seems to emanates from the subjects chosen by the artist, often inspired by old original designs and patterns. The Tiki is a human representation of a divinity. It will be frequently encountered on markets. But you will also find some weapons such as spears and "head blowers", musical instruments (toere, ukulele) and cooking ustensils (umete). The material used for sculpture is mostly wood and sometimes stone, mother-of-pearl or bone. Weaving
Originally, this was a specialty of the Austral islands. It can now be found on most Polynesian markets. The wood used for weaving is usually pandanus, although you may see some pices made out of coconut leaves (niau) or local bamboo (ofe). Common articles are hats, baskets and mats (peue).

About Tahiti
Click here to see a map of Tahiti. Tahiti is tropical-paradise located in the French Polynesia. It is the region's biggest and most famous island. Picture aqua-blue seas and palm-fringed beaches and you see Tahiti. The French Polynesia is made up of tasteful resorts, lagoons teeming with tropical fish, perfect for scuba diving and a unique mix of French and Polynesian cuisine. A few kilometres inland of Papeete is the famous Bain Loti. This is a favourite swimming spot for locals. Tahiti also has a lush and rugged side that offers endless possibilities for walkers and mountain climbers. Here you will find spectacular waterfalls, lava tubes and Polynesian relics, including the ruined temples. The Island of Bora Bora is regarded as the most beautiful island in the Pacific because of its lush-green volcanic peaks, huge lagoon, and the sandy motus that skirts its coast. People come here to dive in the fish and coral-filled lagoon and to climb the three peaks, Hue, Pahia and Otemanu. Rangiroa, in the Tuamotu Archipelago, is the second-biggest Island in the world. It is the most populated island in the archipelago. Divers come from everywhere to experience the great abundance of marine life within the lagoon. Pearl farming and mother-of-pearl production is important to the local economy here.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tahiti - Culture Tahiti , often called "The Island of Love" , is the largest of the 118 Islands and atolls that comprise French Polynesia. The 1,042 sq. km. (402 sq. miles) of Tahiti's surface area consists of mountain peaks reaching over 2, 000 meters ( 7,000 ft.) into a lei of wispy clouds; deep green valleys covered with rainforests and soft ferns, waterfalls cascading into cool sweet rivers and streams and flat coastal land, with luxurious tropical vegetation. Around Tahiti-Nui (big Tahiti) a 114 km. (71 miles) road winds between the mountains and the sea. And on the peninsula of Tahiti-lti (little Tahiti) the road continues down each coast for 18 km. (12 mile). An interior road leads past dairy farms and citrus groves to a panoramic view on the Plateau of Taravao-the isthmus that connects the two Islands. Papeete , the bustling capital of Tahiti and Her Islands, contains the territorial government offices, gendarmerie, hospitals and clinics, banks, telecommunications center, airline and travel agencies, boutiques and black pearl shops. International cargo freighters, copra schooners, luxury liners and sailing yachts share the harbour. A modem city, it hums with happy voices as the daily drama is staged. Tahiti , however, offers enough interesting excursions and sites to make it worth a short stay.
