Reception
6:00 pm, Morven Park Mansion May 24 - June 2: MHH Sporting Art Morven Park Mansion Coach House Contact: Gia Anderson Foxhunting - a Virginia heritage since Colonial times, evokes both sound and imagery; the music of hounds in the chase, the staccato of the huntsman's horn and scarlet coats flickering by a backdrop of autumn foliage. The Museum, located in the north wing of the Mansion, contains the art, artifacts and literature of this centuries-old pastime - a collection of paintings, bronzes, and photographs; displays of elegant hunting attire and tack; music, books and videos portraying famous hounds, huntsmen and Hunts in North America and England. Beagling and French staghunting artifacts are also on display. The Museum's oldest foxhunting treasure is a gracefully curved 1731 hunting horn carried by Colonial Governor Samuel Ogle of Maryland. Governor Westmoreland Davis was an avid foxhunter and served as the Master of the Loudoun Hunt in 1906. He was one of the founders the Masters of Foxhounds Association (MFHA) and the estate is now home to the MFHA and the Museum of Hounds and Hunting.

English Literature
It is not unfitting to compare English Literature to a great tree whose far spreading and ever fruitful branches have their roots deep down in the soil of the past. Over such a tree, since the small beginnings of its growth, many vicissitudes of climate have passed; periods of storm, of calm, of sunshine, and of rain; of bitter winds and of genial life-bearing breezes; each change leaving its trace behind in the growth and development of the living plant. It is obvious, then,, that to present the complete history of such an organism in a few pages is impossible; all that can be attempted in this article is to describe the main lines of its life. Christianity , preached by St. Augustine in 597, bringing in its train education, science, and the arts, was the main factor in this refining change. Such British tribes as had escaped the English destroyer remained for a time almost entirely apart, though they and their literature were afterwards to have no small influence upon the literary development of England. Putting aside minor verse we come first upon the "Beowulf", a narrative poem which, together with a few other fragments, is all we have of the old English epic. It seems clear that the matter of it is much older than its present form. It is a storehouse of the thinking and feeling of the forefathers of the English people when they were still heathen and before they came to Britain, even though the poem may not have been actually put together in its present form until the ninth or tenth century. It gives a picture of very great interest of certain aspects of the actual life of the people. The English temper of mind at its best, enduring and heroic, pervades it throughout.

The study of languages has been the fundamental basis of liberal education since the Renaissance and is crucial to learning in the 21st century, as technologies create global channels of communication. This department, therefore, is committed to promoting the study of at least one second language in order to enable students to participate in the world of international communities and, moreover, to appreciate and contribute to a broad spectrum of diverse cultures. The Department of French, Italian, and Comparative Literature offers a complete sequence of courses in two languages and in the literatures and cultures of the world.
