French literature
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
French literature is literature written in the French language ; and especially, literature written in French by citizens of France Although the French people are of mixed origin, having Celtic and Germanic as well as Roman strains in their composition, it is the Roman that has counted most. The French language itself may be regarded as a modern form of Latin . The Latin genius, as it has often been called, has seemed to hover over the development of the French culture and determine its destinies. It has bestowed upon the French people their love of order, clarity and reasonableness, their instinctive avoidance of extremesthe very qualities which are most conspicuous in their literature. In all artistic matters the French are essentially conservative, despite the fact that they have often been initiators of new movements. The French have always taken ideas and aesthetic matters seriously. Their literature is therefore the best from which to study literary movements . For that reason and because of its long and illustrious history and its influence on other literatures, French literature occupies, as it were, a central position.

Subject Librarian : English and French Language and Literature
Overview The library collections on French language and literature at Notre Dame aim to meet the needs of students and faculty in the French section of the Department of Romance Languages. Those needs cover all periods of the literature of France and of other Francophone countries. Library needs continue to expand as literary studies become increasingly more interdisciplinary.
Books and periodicals relating to the French language can be found in the Library of Congress classification range PC 2001 to 3761 and materials relating to French literature in PQ 1 to 3999. Many works relevant to French literary topics can also be found in the PN section among studies of various genres. The collections reflect the increased development of recent years and are consequently stronger in works published since the late 1980s.
French materials also appear in other fields of study, such as history and religion. Sets of revolutionary newspapers and proceedings in facsimile can be found in the section on the French Revolution. A variety of interesting sources can be found in the Rare Book Collection in religion

FRENCH LITERATURE. The moral and poetical peculiarities of the older and more authentic of these chansons are strongly marked, though perhaps not quite so strongly as some of their encomiasts have contended, and as may appear to a reader of the most famous of them, the Chanson de Roland, alone. In that poem, indeed, war and religion are the sole motives employed, and its motto might be two lines from another of the finest chansons (Aliscans, 161162): Dist a Bertran: Navons mais flul losir, Tant ke vivons alons paiens ferir. The special period of fabliau composition appears to have been the 12th and 13th centuries. It signifies on the one side the growth of a lighter and more sportive spirit than had S~ia1 But this serious and discontented spirit betrays itself also in compositions which are not parodies or travesties in. form. Early DramaBefore passing to the prose writers of the middle ages, we have to take some notice of the dramatic productions of those timesproductions of an extremely interesting character, but, like the immense MYsteries majority of medieval literature, poetic in form. The ir~ies. The morality was the natural result on the stage of the immense literary popularity of allegory in the Roman de la rose and itr imitations. There is hardly an abstraction, a virtue, a vice, 1
