The French and Indian War
France and Britain were international rivals seeking wealth and power. This competition extended to the colonies, and allowed the two countries to fight each other overseas without formally declaring war and risking invasion of the homelands. The French and Indian War was a war by proxy initially, and was one of a chain of conflicts stretching back almost a century. The failure of the French to establish colonies on the Atlantic seaboard south of the Saint Lawrence River, and their slow occupation of the Ohio River and Mississippi River valleys, allowed the English to ultimately gain control of the North American continent.
Failure of the French
The Wars Before the French and Indian War
The War of the Grand Alliance was fought between 1689-97, after Louis XIV of France invaded the lands east of France, a remnant of the Holy Roman Empire, and stimulated emmigration of German-speaking residents of the Palatinate to America in the process. The American portion of the conflicts between France and England (allied with Spain and the Netherlands, home of King William III before he was chosen to replace James II in the Glorious Revolution of 1688) was known as King William's War. The English failed in an attempt to capture Quebec, and most of King William's War consisted of skirmishes on the western frontiers of the colonies. The Treaty of Ryswick that technically ended the war created only a pause in the fighting.

Local News French-Indian War group launches online guide to anniversary events Friday, February 28, 2003 By Marylynne Pitz, Post-Gazette Staff Writer History buffs have a new Internet site to visit. The War for Empire Consortium launched its Web site yesterday. The consortium, made up of representatives from local historic sites, created the Web site to announce events that will mark the 250th anniversary of the French and Indian War, also known as the War for Empire or the Seven Years War, in 2004. The war, which began in 1754 and ended in 1763, pitted Britain, France and American Indians against one another in a monumental struggle for political and economic control of North America. A young George Washington, Pittsburgh and its Point all played key roles in the war. The confluence of Pittsburgh's three rivers was a very desirable site for a fort. There are 18 historic sites in Western Pennsylvania associated with the war.

Including Supplemental Material from Soldiers in King Philip's War This compact and readable book represents an amalgam of two brief summaries written by George M. Bodge on King Philip's War. This bitter conflict, pitting the New England colonies against the Narraganset and Wampanoag tribes, was fought from 1675-1677. The colonial militias suffered severe reverses before finally conquering Philip with the help of the Mohegans and other Indian allies. The main text of the work was privately published in pamphlet form in 1891. This edition includes supplemental data from Bodge's larger work

There is no proof these ancient residents were ancestors of the Abenaki, but there is no reason to think they were not. Acolapissa The mild climate of the lower Mississippi required little clothing. Acolapissa men limited themselves pretty much to a breechcloth, women a short skirt, and children ran nude until puberty. With so little clothing with which to adorn themselves, the Acolapissa were fond of decorating their entire bodies with tattoos. In cold weather a buffalo robe or feathered cloak was added for warmth.
