he French and Indian War was a period in our history that is largely overlooked today. Interestingly, it is a period of British history and French history, as well as American, since the war was fought by the French and the subjects of New France (Canada) against Britain and her colonial subjects. Officially, the war took place in 1756-1763. But critical events in North America, including the first real battle in 1754 led by a fresh young commander named George Washington, took place years before war was declared. Also, the war ended in North America in 1761, two years before it ended in Europe. Most of the battles took place in the Hudson River/Champlain Valley corridor, and, secondarily, the Connecticut River valley. For hundreds of years, Indians and then European explorers traveled north from the mouth of the Hudson River to a place near the south end of Lake George, where they carried there canoes and small boats a few miles overland and resumed their journeys on Lake George. At the north end of Lake George was another portage to the south end of Lake Champlain. From the north end of Lake Champlain, another series of portages and river routes emptied into Hudson Bay in Canada. Many Indian tribes lived along this region, and both the French and British military built fortifications up and down the waterways.

France and England began fighting because each believed they owned the land in the Ohio River Valley. During this time, French explorers had made friends with the Indians, and in doing so turned the Indians against the British. Once war began, the Indians helped the French fight the British. During the war many settlers in Western Maryland were killed. Several forts were built to help provide protection. Fort Necessity, at Great Meadows in Pennsylvania, and in Maryland, Fort Cumberland was built around what is now the City of Cumberland, and Fort Frederick, near Hancock. Many Western Maryland settlers were frightened by all the killings, and fled their homes and farms, seeking safer areas. Most went to Frederick, Annapolis or Baltimore. Finally, after England won the war, most of the settlers who had left their homes in Western Maryland did not return. They stayed in Frederick, Annapolis or Baltimore, and by doing so increased the growth of these cities.

SAVOIR FAIRE: The French and Indian War
Sandra Bell, Research and Information Services William Fowler Jr., Director of the Massachusetts Historical Society, historian, professor, and author of several books on American history, spoke to an enthusiastic group on February 18, 2003, about his latest research project, the French and Indian War.
From left to right: Sandra Burrows, William M. Fowler, Nina Milner.
The French and Indian War (1754-1763) was a series of conflicts between the French and English for control of North America. Dr. Fowler provided a chronology, context and analysis of the key events for his audience. The French and Indian War has several names, including the War for Empire, the Seven Years’ War, and the War of the Conquest. Dr. Fowler suggested that it might also be called the first World War since the conflict spanned the entire globe from Europe to India, from the West Indies to the Philippines, and from North America to Asia. The period also saw the feats and achievements of some of history's famous characters: George Washington, General James Wolfe, the Marquis de Montcalm and William Pitt. It also saw the Battle of the Plains of Abraham on September 13, 1759, a significant date in the evolution of the country of Canada, a day which changed the course of history on the North American continent. The context for the French and Indian War was the rivalry between France and England. After the Reformation, both countries went different ways: England became Protestant while France remained Roman Catholic. While both sought overseas exploits, neither country was the first to arrive in the New World. Other nation states such as Spain and Portugal had already ventured into North America. However, the rivalry between the two countries was transferred to the New World.
