84. Masons (Freemasonry) - Christian Or Anti-Christian?
Masons (freemasonry). freemasonry refers to the principles, institutions, and practices of the fraternal order of the Free and Accepted Masons.

Masons (Freemasonry)
Christian or Anti-Christian?
Freemasonry refers to the principles, institutions, and practices of the fraternal order of the Free and Accepted Masons. The largest worldwide society, Freemasonry is an organization of men based on the "fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man," using builders' tools as symbols to teach basic moral truths generally accepted by persons of good will. Their motto is "morality in which all men agree, that is, to be good men and true." It is religious in that a belief in a Supreme Being and in the immortality of the soul are the two prime requirements for membership, but it is nonsectarian in that no religious test is used. The purpose of Freemasonry is to enable men to meet in harmony, to promote friendship, and to be charitable. Its basic ideals are that all persons are the children of one God, that all persons are related to each other, and that the best way to worship God is to be of service to people.

By the time of the Haitian Revolution, there were already several Masonic lodges catering to French colonists. The idea of mystical fraternities also appealed to Haitians whose ancestors had developed their own secret societies in Africa. After Independence, they joined Masonic lodges in great numbers and freely used fraternal imagery in other sacred contexts. The all-seeing eye, pyramid, square and compass, skull and crossbones, pick, shovel, top hat, and other funereal symbols are especially prevalent in imagery evoking the Gedes and the Bawon Samdi. Foreword: This sermon was prepared while Dr. Alva J. McClain was the pastor of the First Brethren Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Several young men of that church were urged by friends to enter the Masonic lodge and they came to Dr. McClain for counsel in the matter. As the outcome of a conference with them he promised to make a fair investigation of the organization on the basis of such Masonic literature as might be available to the general public, and to report his findings in the form of a sermon to the congregation. Following the delivery of the sermon to a large audience, a number of interested friends made provision for its publication requesting that it be printed as delivered with as little change as possible. This will explain the conversational manner. This booklet has had wide circulation, having gone through six printings. In order to make the documentation up to date, the references in the Encyclopedia of Freemasonry were taken from the "New and Revised Edition" published by the Masonic History company in 1929. BMH Books sends forth this, the seventh printing with the prayer that this important message by the late Dr. Alva J. McClain might serve in an increasing ministry of helpfulness to persons being confronted by Freemasonry, and as Dr. McClain himself said in an earlier foreword, "that its ministry may be used to open the eyes of men, that they may see and honour the Lord Jesus Christ as the 'true God, and eternal life' (1 John 5:20)." FREEMASONRY FOR WOMEN
by catherine yronwode Can women be Freemasons? The answer is YES. To understand the role of women in Freemasonry, it is necessary to go back into the history of the fraternity. It has been said that exclusion of women from the craft forms one of the "ancient landmarks" of the order. Is this true? The question is answered in five parts:

With commentary by Moncure Daniels Conway.

British-American author of The Age of Reason, Common Sense, Rights of Man and Crisis, Thomas Paine has not been proven to have been a Freemason. A brilliant pamphleteer, his theory about the origins of Freemasonry is only of interest as an historical curiosity. HISTORY INDEX TRANSITION THEORY Thomas Paine's
Origin of Free-Masonry NOTE: This essay appeared in New York, 1818, with an anonymous preface of which I quote the opening paragraph: "This tract is a chapter belonging to the Third Part of the Age of Reason, as will be seen by the references made in it to preceding articles, as forming part of the same work. It was culled from the writings of Mr. Paine after his death, and published in a mutilated state by Mrs. Bonneville, his executrix. Passages having a reference to the Christian religion she erased, with a view no doubt of accommodating the work to the prejudices of bigotry. These, however, have been restored from the original manuscript, except a few lines which were rendered illegible." Madame Bonneville published this fragment in New York, 1810 (with the omissions I point out) as a pamphlet. — Dr. Robinet ( Danton - Emigre

Did you know that English Freemasonry is organised separately and independently from Scottish and Irish Freemasonry? In the United Kingdom alone, there are three Grand Lodges for English Freemasonry, Irish Freemasonry (both Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic), and Scottish Freemasonry. The organisation which manages Freemasonry in each kingdom is called a Grand Lodge. English masonry (or freemasonry) is administered by the United Grand Lodge of England ( UGLE ). This site contains links to many useful sources of information about Freemasonry: both worldwide and English. It also has copies of official statements by UGLE; and a List of Grand Lodges recognized by UGLE, including all Overseas District Grand Lodges, Inspectorates and unattached Lodges.

What is Freemasonry?
Introduction
Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest secular fraternal societies. This leaflet is intended to explain Freemasonry as it is practised under the United Grand Lodge of England, which administers Lodges of Freemasons in England and Wales and in many places overseas. The explanation may correct some misconceptions. Freemasonry is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. Its members are taught its precepts by a series of ritual dramas, which follow ancient forms and use stonemasons' customs and tools as allegorical guides.
The Essential Qualification for Membership
The essential qualification for admission into and continuing membership is a belief in a Supreme Being. Membership is open to men of any race or religion who can fulfil this essential qualification and are of good repute.
Freemasonry and Religion
Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. Its essential qualification opens it to men of many religions and it expects them to continue to follow their own faith. It does not allow religion to be discussed at its meetings.
The Three Great Principles
For many years Freemasons have followed three great principles:
Brotherly Love
Every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding to his fellow creatures.

The Structure of Freemasonry

American Freemasonry remembles two sets of stairs that begin and end together, as this chart of Masonic structure shows. A Mason's first step is to become an Entered Apprentice. He climbs to the third step where most Masons stay. If he wants to go in the Masonic hierarchy, he enters either the Scottish or York rites. Many authorities say the Scottish Rite was begun by Scots emigre's in France; the York Rite is named after York, England where, by legend, the first Masonic body was organized. In the Scottish Rite a Mason climbs 30 steps, or degrees. The name he takes on at each degree is written on each step in the chart. Where there are two names the top is used by northern Masons, the italicized one by southern Masons. Some figures a Mason meets in Rite ceremonies stand on the steps (from bottom): King Solomon, King Cyrus, acolyte, George Washington, Sultan. Each degree teaches a moral. To earn a degree candidate learns the moral and participates in ceremony dramatizing it. A 32 degree is the
highest degree a Mason can earn. The 33 degree is awarded by the Supreme Council, ruling body of the Rite.

Humanum Genus - Encyclical on Freemasonry - Promulgated on April 20, 1884 - Pope Leo XIII Preliminary Comments:
From 1738 A.D. to approximately the 1950's the Catholic Church has consistently and strongly opposed Masonic institutions and their affiliates. Such evils as atheistic Communism and the destructive forms of Socialism are directly associated with Freemasonry (Mason - Freemason).
In more recent years it has become evident that not only the Catholic Church has been under attack, but also, all God fearing Christian religious associations have become increasingly under the influence of Freemasonry (Mason - Freemason).
Recently I asked these questions to a Christian gentleman in regard to comments he had made concerning Freemasonry: "Does the Masonic organization have specified goals for influencing or controlling various Christian churches? How does the influence of Masons / Freemasons corrupt Christianity?"
The following are excerpts from his response:
"You have asked some very good questions.
