Welcome to Le Poulet Gauche
This is a guide to the history, culture, and daily life of 16th century France. It was originally developed as a resource for historical recreation. The proprietor of the Poulet Gauche has acquired other responsibilities and the tavern has not been opened in a few years. But the body of reference material is still useful, so it is being reorganized and updated.

Prelude to Operation Overlord
During the first six months of 1944, the United States and Great Britain concentrated land, naval, and air forces in England to prepare for Operation Overlord, the assault on Hitler's "Fortress Europe." While the Soviet Union tied down a great portion of the enemy's forces, the western Allies marshaled their resources, trained their forces, separately and jointly, for the operation, and fine tuned the invasion plans to take full advantage of their joint and combined capabilities. Before the invasion, the air and sea components played major roles. The 12,000 planes of the Allied air forces swept the Luftwaffe from the skies, photographed enemy defenses, dropped supplies to the resistance, bombed railways, attacked Germany's industries and isolated the battlefield. The Allies' naval component was similarly active during the buildup. The navies escorted convoys, patrolled and protected the English Channel, reconnoitered beaches and beach defenses, conducted amphibious rehearsals and organized and loaded a mighty flotilla to land the assault forces in France. Meanwhile, the nine army divisions (three airborne and six infantry) from the United States, Britain and Canada trained and rehearsed their roles in the carefully choreographed operation. Rangers climbed cliffs, engineers destroyed beach obstacles, quartermasters stockpiled supplies and infantrymen waded through the English surf as each honed the skills necessary for the invasion's success.

Modern History Sourcebook:
Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869):
History of the Revolution of 1848 in France
Lamartine was a Romantic poet, a member of the provisional government, and a one-time presidential candidate. Here he recounts events in France in 1848. Initial demands were for liberal political reforms. Soon social and economic issues came quickly to the fore as an organized working class began to make demands. The 12th arrondissement [ note: district ]of Paris had arranged a banquet. The opposition had promised to verify the right by its presence, and the banquet was to take place on the 20th of February. The ministry did not oppose it by force. They merely proposed to certify the offence by a commissary of police, and to try the question by the courts of law. The opposition was unanimous for accepting the judicial debate on this ground. Everything was prepared for this peaceable demonstration. On the eve of it, the ministry, disturbed by a summons addressed to the National Guards, without arms, by the impatient republicans, declared at the tribune that they retracted their concessions, and would disperse the manifestation by force. M. Barrot summoned the constitutional opposition to his house to deliberate.

Technically my wedding anniversary isn't for another hour and seven minutes, but try telling that that to a man with a big sword and a kilt. My parents were drafted to babysit tonight, not that they considered it a.....noun describing a thing that the government does to force you into an action not of your own choosing. "Burden" would fit right into the flow of the above sentence, but it really doesn't communicate the correct sense of "outside forces compelling one into an action not of one's own choosing" as well as the word that I would have chosen would have if I had not had hoisted the celebratory Burn's night glass of expensive scotch after consuming the celebratory Burn's night sixpack of imported ales. That word will come to me, but likely not until I've been abed for an hour or three. Words like that have a predilection for coming at inopportune times, and any time that one sits bolt upright in the wee hours of the morning, in the bed one shares with one's six months pregnant wife, and shouts "Encumbrance!"?

ICES Homepage FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT ICES SYMPOSIUM: "ACOUSTICS IN FISHERIES AND AQUATIC ECOLOGY" Montpellier, France 10-14 June 2002 As climate change, environmental factors, and fisheries depletion increase concern about marine life, the need for accurate assessments of fish and plankton becomes ever more urgent. Acoustical methods are the primary remote-sensing tool in the aquatic environment. The fifth ICES Symposium on acoustics of aquatic systems will explore recent advances and the expansion of acoustical methods into a broad range of environments. New analytical techniques, new technologies, and innovative acoustical implementations are changing the way we evaluate aquatic life. This ICES Symposium, the first on this topic to be held in the new millennium, will provide a unique opportunity for the international community to take stock of this rapidly evolving field. OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE Since the first symposium on fisheries acoustics, 30 years ago, these methods have been used extensively for observation and measurement in oceans, lakes, and rivers. Scales of study extend from a few centimetres to hundreds of kilometres, and from individual organisms to entire populations of fish and plankton. Recently the scope of acoustics has increased dramatically, and the methods and tools provide information to fisheries biologists as well as to ecologists, in most aquatic ecosystems : from the deepest oceans to extremely shallow waters, from unicellular organisms to the biggest marine mammals, for limnological and littoral environments, for pelagic, demersal and benthic populations, or even bottom type and
