A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy
Sterne by Sir Joshua Reynolds by Mr. Yorick Last update: 24 March 1995 Source: A Sentimental Journey/ through France and Italy by Laurence Sterne/ Author of "Tristram Shandy," etc./ With a Life of the Author/ By H. D. Traill/ A. L. Burt, Publisher,/ New York [Not Dated, circa 1890]. Compared with critical editions and edited accordingly, this Renascence Editions online edition was prepared by Richard Bear rbear@oregon.uoregon.edu. NOTE. In 1765 Laurence Sterne travelled through France and Italy as far south as Naples, and after returning determined to describe his travels from a sentimental point of view. The decision was probably come to on account of the success with which he had touched upon his earlier stay in France in Book VII. of Tristram Shandy. what was destined to be the last volume of Tristram Shandy was published in 1767, and the author at once turned his attention to a new project of four volumes describing A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy.

Frances Harper (1825 - 1911) Harper's novel about the Reconstructed South, Iola Leroy, or Shadows Uplifted (1892), was the first book published by a black American. Born of free parents and self-educated, Harper worked as a nursemaid, seamstress, needlework teacher, and writer. She produced ten volumes of poetry and many articles, along with her novel. Advocating women's rights as well as abolition, Harper lectured at the 1869 meeting of the Equal Rights Association. But when the schism occurred between abolitionists and feminists, she sided with Fredrick Douglass, who believed that the issue of race had priority over that of gender. Harper continued her work on behalf of black women, founding the National Association of Colored Women and serving as its vice president until her death. 198. Biography Of Frances Burney
    Biography of the English novelist.
    http://dc37.dawsoncollege.qc.ca/burney/biofb.html
    Frances Burney d'Arblay
In her long life that spanned five reigns, Frances Burney d'Arblay (1752-1840) created a new genre in the English novel, chronicled events ranging from George III's mad crisis to the aftermath of Waterloo, and wrote comedies that could have rivalled Sheridan's had they been produced. She was born June 13, 1752, in King's Lynn, Norfolk, the daughter of Esther Sleepe Burney and music historian Dr. Charles Burney. From the time she learned her alphabet, she was a writer, composing odes, plays, songs, farces, and poems at an early age. She burned them all at age 15, most likely under the influence of her stepmother, who didn't think it appropriate for women to write. But Frances Burney's urge to write could not be stifled. At age 16, she began the diary that would chronicle personal and public events from the early reign of George III to the dawn of the Victoria age. These included first-hand accounts of the Johnson-Boswell circle, the trial of Warren Hastings, George III's mad crisis, Napoleonic France, a mastectomy without anaesthesia, and the aftermath of the battle of Waterloo, which found her nursing the stream of English wounded evacuated from the battlefield. She knew luminaries such as David Garrick, Sir Joshua Reynolds, James Boswell, and Samuel Johnson through her father, and her early diaries chronicle evenings spent in this circle at home.
