Workshop Information
Archaeology is at a point where it can benefit greatly from the application of computer vision methods, and in turn provides a large number of new, challenging, interesting conceptual problems and data for computer vision. In particular, it provides new horizons for the development of shape theory for structured and free-form representation, deformation, and Bayesian inferencing from 3D and 2D data, invariants for matching and searching, conceptual grouping, geometric and feature databases, 3D immersion, and many more. The purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum to discuss how computer vision has been applied to archaeology problems and in turn define new interesting problems to work on. The format of the proposed one day workshop is a set of talks and a poster session followed by a panel discussion. A list of possible themes for submitted papers, meant to be suggestive rather than exclusive, is:

Christian Archaeology
Christian archaeology is that branch of the science of archaeology the object of which is the study of ancient Christian monuments. The modern historian who endeavours to reconstruct the life of the primitive Christians has two sources of information to draw upon, namely: literary and monumental sources. By literary sources is commonly understood the existing remains of early Christian literature; monumental sources consist of the various classes of objects of a material character surviving from antiquity, which were produced by Christians or under Christian influence, sepulchral inscriptions, paintings, sculptures churches, and the products of the minor arts. The principal aim of Christian archaeology, as indicated, is to ascertain all that is possible relative to the manners and customs of the early Christians from the monuments of Christian antiquity. Any attempt to determine the date when the period loosely designated "Christian Antiquity" gave place to the medieval period must of necessity be more or less arbitrary. As a consequence of this difficulty, differences of opinion exist among archaeologists as to the chronological limits to be assigned to

“The initiative to start APAA was a call from the heart.”
As its title the “Association for the Protection of Afghan Archaeology, Inc.” indicates, it is a non-profit organization dedicated to the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage of Afghanistan. Our goal is to bring understanding and raise awareness. This ensures the promotion of the Afghan Archaeological and Cultural Heritage. This goal is realized through its teaching in schools and public venues across the world, including in Afghanistan and in the Afghan and multi-cultural Bay Area community. Also we work to promote and assist in the education of the international public about the inherent value of archaeological treasures to cultural identity, and to specifically focus on the plight of Afghan people regarding the loss of their cultural heritage. Through this Association Dr.Tarzi assists in educating the younger generations as well as the older ones. He does this by publishing children books as well as provide training programs and education in Afghanistan to future Archaeologists so they may become Professionals of the trowel and skilled restorers; provided with the necessary skills, tools and equipment they in turn may become self reliant and efficient.

The Arveni and the Auvergne
The oppidum of Gondole According to Greek and Latin authors, the Arveni after whom the Auvergne is named, were the most powerful Gallic tribe in the 3rd-2nd centuries BC. Their king, Luernios was "the richest man in all Gaul", but with the defeat of his son Bituïtos in 123 BC when the Romans invaded the Provence, the tribe was eclipsed by its neighbours the Aedui , and by the Sequani of eastern Gaul.
Gold coin of the Arvernian ruler Vercingetorix However, the Arveni once again took the lead in resisting Rome in 53-53 BC when their leader Vercingetorix successfully defended the oppidum of Gergovia against Julius Caesar, and even united the majority of the Gallic tribes under his leadership, though he was finally besieged and defeated by Caesar at

Art Gothic Impressionism Post-Impressionism Romanesque After England's Stonehenge, Europe's most famous prehistoric remains are France's Paleolithic cave paintings. Created 15,000 to 20,000 years ago, they depict mostly hunting scenes and abstract shapes. Whether these paintings served in religious rites or were simply decorative is anybody's guess. Important examples of ancient art include: Cave art. The caves at Lascaux, the Sistine Chapel of prehistoric art, have been closed since 1963, but experts have created a replica, Lascaux II. To see the real stuff, visit Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, which boasts four caves (Font de Gaume is the best). In neighboring Lot Valley, outside Cahors, is the
