EMAIL this page to a friend Foreword by Judith H. Shulman, Lee S. Shulman Anyone interested in mathematics teaching and learning is likely to get hooked on case discussions. Barnett, Goldenstein, and Jackson have found that teachers gain a deeper understanding of mathematical ideas themselves in the process of examining the mathematical thinking of children. Their case discussion approach promotes dialogue between and among teachers which serves as a catalyst for changing and improving the curriculum. Case methods open a whole new way of fostering teacher learning that both draws on and informs practice. The cases—written by upper-elementary and middle school teachers about their experiences covering fractions, decimals, ratios, and percents—enhance professional development by stimulating reflection and dialogue about problems encountered in the classroom. Although the cases contain many examples of teaching that reflect the NCTM

Mathematics Teaching Cases: Fractions, Decimals, Ratios, and Percents
Hard to Teach and Hard to Learn?
By: Carne Barnett Donna Goldenstein Babette Jackson
The 29 cases in this book are written by classroom teachers who hope that by sharing their experiences, others will learn. One purpose is to provide problematic situations that will evoke thoughtful analyses and reflection about teaching and learning. Ultimately, the goal is for these processes to become self-sustaining within the culture of the school and the classroom. A second purpose of this casebook is for teachers to build their own mathematical knowledge as it relates to real classroom situations.

Ellen Dombrowski Field Exercise #2 This week I was given the opportunity at my placement to teach decimals and percentages to fourth graders. This proved to be a very enlightening experience for me; it opened my eyes to some of the basic challenges that teachers have to face on a daily basis. My co-op, Lisa Fink, told me last week that she would soon be starting a unit on percentages. Yesterday, she began this unit and found out that the kids had little or no exposure to decimals—a fairly fundamental step between fractions and percentages. My job, the next day, was to develop an activity that would help the kids to make that transition between fractions, decimals and percentages. This was much more difficult than I had originally thought it would be. Fostering Mathematical Power , to see what Dr. Baroody recommended for teaching kids decimals and percentages. It was interesting to see how this textbook was finally connecting to a real teaching experience, and I found the information to be rather helpful. That night as I tried to come up with an effective plan, I realized that there are many different dimensions that are connected to what is seemingly a simple concept to learn.

Unit Outline Decimals and Percents Wendy Getson, Matthew Raniowski
Duncan Retson, Jeff Zwicker
Grade 7 Mathematics
Class size: 30 students
Duration of classes: 50 minutes Prerequisite Knowledge: In preparing this Unit Outline, we make certain assumptions about what lessons and units we have already taught to our class. The following understandings are in place:
  • Students have already been taught a unit on fractions wherein they developed all of the following skills:
Conversion to and from real numbers Expressing in lowest terms, LCD and GCM Equivalence of fractions Basic operations Conversion to Percent
Students have worked up to thousandths place and have performed all of the basic operations we will teach on these decimals of no more than three decimal places.
General Methodology and Reasoning: Through this unit the teaching approach is student-centred. Most of the lessons, excepting the general introductions, are divided into three day modules: the first day features an introduction engaging the students with manipulatives in groups and through directed questioning; the second day features cooperative problem solving in groups; the third day features independent problem solving. This approach is intended to involve the students in the learning process and place the lessons in a relevant context. In much the same tone, the unit concludes with a student driven review. Students in groups are responsible for preparing a written report and delivering it orally before the class, summarizing what they have learned through the unit. This review contains the important cross-curricular message the mathematicians and scientists must have strong communication skills too.
