Background on the chosen class
The class chosen to do my CDA with was 9A2, a Year 9 class. Within Year 9 at Glossopdale there are twelve classes, six "A" classes numbered 1-6 and six "B" classes also numbered 1-6. Class 1 is the top set class and class 6 is the bottom set class with there being no difference between A or B. There are twenty-nine pupils in the class identified as working at Key Stage Level 4/5 to 6/7 (see Appendix 1 for full class list and individual level indicators). Immediately before the Easter holidays, this class were sitting mock Key Stage 3 SAT's. All but two pupils had been entered for the SAT Level 4-6, except for Emma Shard and Kathryn Hall who had been entered for Level 5-7. The text book the school was using for this class was Letts Educational Key Stage 3 Classbook. Basically, the book has three sections; Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6 that reflect National Curriculum Level Indicators for the Key Stage. A topic can appear in all three sections and the level of work will get progressively harder in each section. In September, the class teacher starts at the beginning of the book and aims to complete Level 6 before the Key Stage 3 SAT's. Therefore, the class had already covered a certain amount of work previously in the academic year on Fractions and Percentages (Level 4), Working with Decimals (Level 4), Decimals and Negative Numbers (Level 5) and Fractions and Percentages (Level 5). In Level 6, where I was starting from, the previous knowledge was being consolidated under one heading Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. I found some of the content in the Level 6 chapter was at times too difficult for some of the weaker pupils in the class.

A penny is 1/100th of a dollar or one percent. When you have 100 pennies, that is 100 percent of a dollar. Even with tutoring some 5th graders recently, I have found that relating decimals to money (and then to percent) is very effective. Relate it to the real world of grades. When they make an 80 on a paper, that is 80 percent. If there are 5

MA26 Applied Math
This course begins by reviewing the fundamentals of arithmetic and teaches computational skills with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents. These skills are then applied to a variety of topics, such as measurement, ratio and proportion, probability, statistics, graphs, and basic algebra and geometry. The student's understanding of each topic is immediately reinforced through sample solutions, ample exercises and reviews, and application problems stressing the ongoing use of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Text publisher: Educational Design MA30 Business Math
The worktext for this comprehensive course has two basic components: (1) the rules of and practice with the fundamental mathematical principles of decimals, fractions, percents, weights and measures, estimations, graphs, and shortcuts; and (2) the use of these principles for common applications such as keeping a checking account, calculating interest, calculating time-payment plans and short-term loans, purchase orders and invoices, cash discounts and trade discounts, selling goods, calculating gross pay for payrolls, inventory valuation, cost of goods sold and depreciation.

NCSALL Home Using Software Applications to Teach Math by Catherine Cantrell Seven years ago I was asked to join a project that focused on increasing the use of technology in adult basic education (ABE) programs. Initially I declined. I did not believe in placing basic skills students in front of computer monitors, isolated from other learners and from caring teachers. During graduate school I had observed several adult learning center computer labs where stu dents were left on their own to work through math problems, with the educational software doing most of the processing. While this method probably helps some learners, I found it to be boring and potentially pointless: the drills rarely provided a relevant context in which the students might apply their skills.

PROBABILITY
What are the odds? Lesson: Probability (Math) Grade: 6-8 Objectives: The student will be able to
1. define probability and learn what it is.
2. learn different ways to express probability as a decimal,
ratio, fraction or percent.
3. solve problems based on probability in the real world. Activity: The students will be able to use the information about probability
and apply it to several different problems. Each student will work
with a partner of their liking and work through the problems and
expressing the answers as decimals, ratios, fractions and percents. State Standards:
6.A.3 Represent fractions, decimals, percentages, exponents and scientific notation in equivalent forms.
6.C.3a Select computational procedures and solve problems with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents and proportions. 6.D.3 Apply ratios and proportions to solve practical problems. Procedure: 1. Each student will choose a partner and sit by each other. I will then ask the class to define probability. The group that has the correct answer will receive one point extra credit on a future test.

Through the curriculum, the students gain a familiarity with math vocabulary while solidifying their computation skills. The program also aims to build self-confidence in mathematical abilities and to teach the students organizational skills as demonstrated by and in their work. The process of arriving at one's answer is more important than the answer itself. This philosophy gives the students a greater ability to interpret and solve word problems. Students are recommended to the next level of mathematics, including honors levels based on their performance, attention to details, and diligence in study habits demonstrated in the current course. MATH 5 The Grade 5 math course emphasizes the development of sound computation and reasoning skills using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Students develop competency in all whole number operations and gain a firm foundation in those with fractions and decimals. Elementary statistics is introduced through data analysis. Development of basic geometry concepts continues. Problem-solving skills are stressed in this course.
