STONYFORD, Calif., Apr. 05 /PRNewswire/ STONYFORD, Calif., April 5 /PRNewswire/ The national nonprofit organization Tread Lightly!(R) and General Motors' HUMMER division announced Saturday a new initiative aimed at repairing damage caused by the 2001 "Trough Fire" at the North Fork Campground in the Mendocino National Forest. The organizations have committed over $20,000 to assist with the rehabilitation of the area. The project is part of HUMMER Helps, an ongoing initiative with Tread Lightly!'s Restoration for Recreation(TM) program aimed at promoting socially responsible four-wheeling by enhancing recreational areas and educating the public about responsible outdoor use. HUMMER and Tread Lightly! launched the new initiative at a groundbreaking ceremony at the North Fork Campground near California's Sacramento Valley. "The North Fork area is crucial to Northern California's recreational community," said Mike DiGiovanni, HUMMER general manager. "This initiative will help repair significant damage caused by the fire and restore basic resources that support the activities that make this site so popular. We're proud to be part of such a worthy effort that not only benefits the four- wheeling community, but outdoor enthusiasts of every kind."

    Introduction
Although quality timber production may be the main objective for most of our CRP pine lands, many landowners have other objectives in mind. These other objectives often include enhanced wildlife, clean water, intensified forest aesthetics, quality forest recreational activities, and a variety of other purposes. As these CRP stands are beginning to reach pulpwood size, the big question for many innovative forest landowners then becomes: Which of the above activities can I conduct in my planted pine forests as they reach ten plus years old? First, it seems like a good idea that we get some sense of the characteristics of the trees and the environment they are in. On a site with average productivity (site index = 70) these ten year old pine trees will be about 6 inches DBH and forty-one feet tall. Originally planted at 700 trees per acre, they are now down to about 580 trees per acre due to losses of various types. The understory is mostly open and clear of underbrush. There is a layer of pinestraw on the ground and there is some room between the trees allowing you to walk upright in most places without fear of hitting your head on a limb. There are many recreational activities for a landowner in a CRP forest. Think back to the fondest memories of your youth. Perhaps you can conjure up carefree adventures involving a forest setting.

On February 3, a regular club meeting, the person with the club information showed me the draft of the club information and told me that she was going to circulate it for approval. She said she was going to E-mail it to someone, who would then forward it to me when it was done. (At least that's what I thought would happen.) On February 8, I was working at this auto show and telling people about the event. We were passing out brochures and cards with our Web site address. (I'm not posting the address on this page! Sorry.) Around mid-afternoon, I asked the person working on the club information if it had been approved and if I should have received it via E-mail yet. She got upset with me and said that I was being really pushy about asking for this information over and over again. She said, "I've been working 13 hours a day and I don't have time to work on this page. You'll get it when you get it." At this point, I got upset (partially with myself for angering her, and partially with her for her angry response). I didn't say anything to her; instead, I crossed off some words printed on my draft copies of the Web pages and threw my legal pads onto a shelf below the counter and prepared to walk away from the booth. She immediately got furious, followed me and nearly screamed, "

Summit County - Copper Mountain, Breckenridge
    Colorado
    Majestic Mountains Against Blue Skies

Summit County, besides being the host to many popular ski resorts, also is a popular summer playground.
The towns of Breckenridge, Keystone, Dillon, Frisco, Copper Mountain, and Silverthorne all offer a wonderful mix of recreational and cultural activities.
Majestic mountain ranges, blue skies and crystal clear streams provide a flawless setting for any endeavor. Whether hiking, biking, horseback riding or four-wheeling, the countless trails in the region accommodate the novice to the professional.
Water activities abound here as well. Miles of rivers afford themselves to rafting and kayaking. And fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the numerous lakes and streams. Dillon and Frisco Dillon started in the 1880s as a mining camp located at the confluence of the Blue, Snake and Ten Mile rivers, but moved across the Blue River when the railroad lines came through. It was forced to relocated yet again when Dillon Reservoir was built in the 1960s. Dillon Reservoir offers a variety of outdoor summer activities in the towns of Dillon and Frisco. Frisco, located in the shadow of Mt. Royal, started in the 1870s. Its historic park offers visitors a look at Colorado's past. The 1881 jail, log chapel, homes and schoolhouse provide a taste of yesteryear.

"city above the clouds" the history of woodland park The history of Woodland Park is typically that of a small community in the mountains, favored with a good location and able to respond to changing situations. This combination of favorable location and ability to respond has resulted in periods of rapid growth since 1891. This growth has been directed in a positive way to protect the natural beauty of the area as well as the residents. Woodland Park has become a city where modern convenience blends well with historic charm. The location of Woodland Park is its greatest asset. The city is located on a high, broad plateau between 8,200 and 9,000 feet above sea level and offers "the best view of Pikes Peak". It is also at the junction of Ute Pass and a valley system that extends north of the city, providing a well-drained town site and favorable access to Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak to the southeast, Denver to the north, and mountain recreation areas in all directions. Nature has been lavish in her donations to Woodland Park, the town taking its name from the thickly wooded hills and valleys on every side. Stately pines and spruce of prolific growth form a perfect forest for miles around, in a grand picturesque scene. Looking to the south the view is spectacular. Pikes Peak with her colossal sheds stands in bold relief against the blue sky, her snowy crest above the clouds. The canyon of Fountain Creek, with its rugged borders, flows to the plains. The easy access to all of this through Ute Pass gives Woodland Park a unique place among the State resort areas.

    Land Use Information
By " Land Use " we generally refer to all aspects of public use of public and private land, including legislative affairs property rights citizen lobbying , and trail maintenance activities. While all the clubs and members in our association enjoy and participate in trail riding and 4 wheeling activities, we also realize that we must stand up for our rights to use public lands. That's what our "Land Use" activities are all about.
    Land Use home page
Southern Four Wheel Drive Association is very active in land use activities. We used to be mainly concerned with trail maintenance activities in areas such as Tellico, Blairsville, Uwharrie, Royal Blue, etc. We still do a lot of trail maintenance work (more than ever). However, due to Washington politics, we had to add legislative affairs, letter writing, and public meetings to our focus. The Clinton/Gore administration was set on locking more and more people out of public lands by restricting recreational activities on public lands. All 4WD associations, under the umbrella of United Four Wheel Drive Associations, have become very politically active to preserve our rights to enjoy public lands. Now with President George W. Bush in office, the situation looks better, but much damage must be undone. Trail information about:
