Facts about Foster Parenting
Foster families are people who take children in need of temporary care into their homes to provide day-to-day care and nurturing. Each child in foster care should have a plan that will let him or her grow up in a permanent family. For many children, the plan is reunification with the birth parents. In these cases, foster families may work with the birth parents as well as with the child, helping them both learn the skills they need to live together again. Foster parents need to be able to love the children who live in their home, and let go of them when it is time to send them back to their parents. For other children, reunification will not be possible. For them, the plan may be another kind of permanent living arrangement such as adoption, guardianship, long-term kinship care, or permanent foster care. Foster parents may become adoptive parents or maintain other kinds of formal or informal ties with the children they parent. Every state has its own rules about foster parenting. However, the chances are good that YOU can be a foster parent in your state.

    Lifeline for foster parents
Nonprofit networks and support groups help foster parents help the kids in their care
By Janis Farmer Being a foster parent is a tough job," says Lou Graham, director of foster care for the Children's Bureau of Southern California. That's one reason that the number of foster parents is shrinking, while the number of children in need of foster care is growing. But something as simple as a foster-parent support group can be the key to keeping foster parents on the job, says Mary Fink, a foster mother for the past 14 years in the Antelope Valley area of Los Angeles. For the first eight years she received children directly from the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services. In 1992 she joined the foster-parent network of the nonprofit Children's Bureau of Southern California, which places foster children referred by the county and provides ongoing training and support for foster parents. Children's Bureau of Southern California, which developed one of the first private foster-care programs in the nation, now runs one of many nonprofit foster-family agencies in the state. To fund the $4-million-a-year program, it relies on foundation, corporate, and individual donations.

    Foster Parent Program
The Massachusetts Department of Social Services offers a ten-week course, entitled Massachusetts Approach to Partnerships in Parenting, for all prospective foster parents. Foster parents become part of a professional team, along with social workers, teachers, doctors, and others, to provide children with the best services possible. There are about 7,000 children in foster care throughout the commonwealth. An important goal of the Department is to keep children in their own schools and communities should the occasion arise that they are in need of foster care. To inquire about becoming a foster parent to a child in our community, please call the Department of Social Services Foster Parent Recruitment Line at 1-800-345-4343.

NOTE: we are not against parenting or parents per se. To the contrary, we are decidedly for any good parenting, and certainly are supportive of all good caregivers whether parents, foster parents, etc. Neither are we anti-government, though a strong strain of vigilance or almost libertarian `scepticism` pervades our work. Good parenting deserves allies wherever they may be found, and agencies must be held to the highest standards of integrity. That is our purpose and ideal. Are you with us?

    by Ron Huxley, LMFT
Attachment u ses a parent's emotional interaction with a child to promote healthy self-esteem. This tool doesn't necessarily refer to the amount of physical interaction. While physical interaction may be necessary to develop emotional bonding, it is not the essential component. Attachment is essential during a child's early years. It communicates unconditional love and a deep sense of trust between parent and child. In a practical manner, children form this attachment when parents attend to their needs. When they are wet, they get changed. When they are frightened, parents are there to comfort them. When they are hungry, parents feed them. And when they hurt, parents care for them. When parents do not convey this empathy to children's needs, children may carry a sense of mistrust throughout their life. They also do not feel compelled to meet their parents' expectations or try to please them. Attachment is a tool that communicates to a child that their parent or parents are there for them. This promotes a healthy sense of self and ability to master their world. parenting WORKS newsletter Parenting does WORK! Get a free parenting ebook when you join today.
