Foster Parents and Grandparents
Though the traditional definition of a parent refers only the biological father or mother of a given individual, those who adopt children or anyone who provides the primary care for a child have all come to be thought of as parents in terms of both tradition and statutory law. By law, parents have certain responsibilities and rights with regard to their minor children. Among these responsibilities are financial support, provision of health care, and education. Through time, as parents have become increasingly concerned with their role as developers of young lives, literature and guidance relating to parenting has become very popular. The links included herein relate specifically to foster parents and grandparents. Get more exposure, list your site

Steps to Becoming a Foster Parent
Step 1. Contact Foster and Adoptive Family Services (FAFS) via email or call 1-877-NJ FOSTER When you contact FAFS, a foster care representative will contact you and you will be asked a few questions about yourself, your family and your interest in fostering or adopting a child. They can also help to answer your questions. Step 2. Read the information provided to you. After contacting you, Foster and Adoptive Family Services will send you a packet of information about the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS), the children served and why foster parents are so important. Step 3. Come to an orientation. Orientation is an opportunity to learn more about the specific issues related to foster parenting.  Sessions are held throughout New Jersey and Foster and Adoptive Family Services will sign you up to attend one at your convenience. Step 4. Complete a homestudy with a caseworker and attend pre-service training. Staff will guide you through an assessment process to help you and DYFS learn as much about each other as possible.  The pre-service training is designed to prepare you to become a foster parent.  DYFS requires that you complete both the homestudy and the preservice training so that you may become certified as a foster parent.

Foster Parenting Foster parenting brought many challenges and taught me about things that I never knew existed until I was faced with them. I was aghast when I found out that not all people treat children as they should be treated. I didn't know that somewhere while I was having a nice day there were innocent little children being burned with cigarettes, tied up to something, put in a closet, box or cage, left in the crib all the time, not given any food, beaten with belts, wire hangers, extension cords, bed slats, or anything else within reach. You might say I had a very rude awakening to the "real" world when I found out things like this go on and I was seeing the result of this in the precious little children I was getting to know. I quickly became familiar with suction machines, PT rolls, apnea and heart monitors, GT buttons, tube feeding, standers, feeder chairs, CPR, spika casts, shunts, and strange uses for hair dryers and cellophane wrap just to name a few new things in my life.

The Children's Aid Society is looking for very special New York City residents in the Bronx and Manhattan to provide temporary homes, stability and loving care to children whose families are unable to care for them at this time. Won't you consider opening your home and your heart to a child who needs you? We are looking for foster parents for children of all ages, races and religions. We especially need foster parents who can provide for:
  • brothers and sisters together teenagers, teen mothers and children children who are medically or physically challenged children with emotional needs.
Although they come from different backgrounds and experiences, all of these children have one thing in common: they are all absolutely lovable . With care from a loving foster parent, all of them can thrive and bring joy, laughter and love into your home.
Open Your Home to a Neighborhood Child
The Children's Aid Society's unique foster care program keeps children in their own neighborhoods. This way, they can go to the same schools and keep the same teachers, friends and supports in place. This approach helps the foster parent, too: the child is happier, resources are more familiar, and connecting to other foster parents is easier. It also helps foster parents develop a positive relationship with birth families, which can speed up the time it takes to reunite the family. To avoid moving children to other parents of the city, we especially need homes in the following New York City boroughs and neighborhoods:

What is foster care?
Foster care is a state mandated service provided through federal, state and local funds to deliver a full range of services for a planned period of time to a child who is abused or neglected as defined by the Code of Virginia (law). These services include casework, treatment and community services. Usually, initial services are aimed at preserving and strengthening families to keep children in their own homes. When a child must be removed from a home and placed in a foster home, the initial goal becomes the provision of services to return the child home.
How does a child enter foster care?
When reasonable efforts to keep a child in his or her own home are unsuccessful, the juvenile court may award custody of the child to the department of social services. In cases where an emergency arises when the court is not in session a child protective services social worker may assume custody of a child and place him or her in a foster home. Either way, the social worker must prove to the juvenile court that "no less drastic alternative than removal of the child from his or her home exists" to protect the child. It is therefore typically in the most serious cases of abuse or neglect that a child is placed in foster care.

More funds, staff needed, foster parents say
By Angela Wilson
News-Leader

Former and current foster parents hope a probe into the Division of Family Services leads state officials to allocate funds for more caseworkers and increase funding for foster parents.
Dominic was placed in DFS care two weeks after his June 4 birthday. A day later, he was placed in the home of John and Jennifer Dilley of Willard.
Dominic, who medical examiners say was severely shaken, died two months later after spending two days on life support. John Dilley is charged with second-degree murder. Dean, pastor at Silver Springs Church of God, wants the probe to also include investigation of the Juvenile Office and family court decisions. Foster parents also said they want the investigation to spearhead: At a foster family picnic Saturday in Springfield, several foster parents criticized Holden for deeply cutting the pockets of social services, making it virtually impossible to hire more caseworkers. The state had to make drastic cuts after revenues fell short of predictions. Subscribe now June 9, 2004:

What is an Orangutan Foster Parent? An Orangutan Foster Parent is someone who sponsors one of the many orphan orangutans that come into the care of the Orangutan Foundation International's Orangutan Care Facility in Indonesian Borneo. A Foster Parent can be an individual or a group of people, such as a school, a classroom, a family or an organization. A Foster Parent is someone who cares about the young orangutans who still need to be helped as they find their way back to the forest. We call someone a foster parent (and not an adopting parent) as the care is temporary and the orangutans are expected to return to the wild. Orangutan Foster Parents receive recognition and a special Foster Parent kit for their concern and support. Puji Ego Why do Orangutans Need Foster Parents?

Pennsylvania Needs Foster Families

Have you ever considered being a foster parent? Would you be willing to care for children temporarily while efforts are made to reunite children with their parents? There are children who need you. For some, foster care is a temporary, safe haven. For others, it is a protective bridge to adulthood. However long they stay and for whatever reasons they enter care, foster care is a necessary protection for many children.
Foster Care Helps Children in Trouble
On any given day in Pennsylvania, there are more than 20,000 children and youth in foster care. From babies to teens, foster care provides these young people with a safe, secure and stable homes while working toward some type of permanency for the child.
Permanency can take many different forms including:
  • Return to legal family
  • Living with relatives
  • Adoption
  • Kinship Care
  • Permanent legal custodianship

At a time when more children are entering foster care, Pennsylvania needs more caring adults willing to provide a loving, supportive environment for a child whose family is temporarily unable to do so.

The Sexualized Child in Foster Care: A Guide for Foster Parents and Other Professionals

by Sally G. Hoyle
THE SEXUALIZED CHILD IN FOSTER CARE gives practical advice, information, training tips, and references for those who work with children who have been sexually abused in a previous placement. Chapters include information about sex and sexuality, distinguishing normal from abnormal sexual behavior, treatment methods, research on sexual abuse assessment, and concerns about the sexually aggressive child. Become a Foster Parent
In 2000, the Family Intervention Program (FIP) was created to generate a fundamental shift in the way FLOC works with children and families in the child welfare system. FIP recognizes and builds on strengths within the family by focusing on the resiliency of the child and family, and by using a team model approach. FIP works with members of the child's extended biological family and their community to strengthen and, if possible, to reunite the family. FIP's goal is to help the family work towards a permanent appropriate plan for the child within twelve months of being removed from their biological family. FIP licenses individuals and families to be a part of the larger team as "professional parents" to assure that goals for the child are met. Through the help of our FIP foster parents, the team can assure safety, stability, permanence and long-term well-being for each child. I'd Like to Talk with Someone About Becoming a Foster Parent! In-Service Training Opportunities for Current Foster Parents Foster Parenting Every year thousands of children throughout the U.S. are removed and placed outside their homes because of abuse, neglect or abandonment. Nationwide the number of children living apart from their birth families exceeded 50,000. Currently in the District of Columbia approximately 3000 children are placed in foster homes apart from their birth families.

What is Foster Care? Foster care with Logan County Children's Services is the full-time, temporary care of a child (birth to 18 years of age) in a family foster home that has been certified according to guidelines set by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. This child cannot stay in his/her own home due to serious family problems, and there is no suitable relative available to provide for him/her. The child may have been a victim of abuse or neglect or may lack adequate care from his/her parents through no fault of their own. foster care is a way to provide for this child on a full-time, temporary basis. How do these children come to our agency? Some families voluntarily seek help from Children's Services and ask that a foster home be provided for their children until their crisis is over. The Juvenile Court also may place children under the temporary custody of the agency. The rules affecting children coming into foster care are set and monitored by federal and state laws. What kind of behavior can be expected from foster children?

Foster Parenting
Being a Foster Parent Really Does Save Lives ! If ' there is available cage space CAP attempts to keep an animal until it finds a home, 'unless' the animal becomes ill, then sadly they have No Choice except to put the dog or cat 'to sleep'. There is no place to house a sick animal at CAP Shelter because the cages stay full with the healthy animals. Therefore the unfortunate animal who gets sick, has little hope for life, 'Unless' a kind-hearted and caring person will be a 'Foster Parent' to them. Many dogs must be 'put to sleep' because they get Kennel Cough which is simply cured by giving them one antibiotic tablet twice a day for 10 to 14 days, occasionally a few days longer. Providing your own dog(s) has a Kennel Cough shot every six months, there is little to be concerned about that your dog might catch it. It is still wise to confine the sick pet in a separate room for the first few days. (Kennel Cough is similar to people getting a cold.) Anyone who has ever boarded a dog at a Kennel knows most Kennels 'require' that your animal has had the Kennel Cough shot within a six month period. The reason for this and why some of the puppies and dogs awaiting a home at shelters get Kennel Cough is because in 'close quarters' (like shelters and kennels) it can spread if the animals have not had their vaccination.

We have fostered for over 30 yrs. We now have 3 girls who are all mentally challenged. We have loved fostering but have worried about the changes and the demands put on foster parents. We are tied down to lots of rules and regulations, some good, some annoying. If we are to truly parent these children we need the support of the agencies, schools and the community. Although we have fostered our disabled daughter for 9 yrs., no one has really been able to come up with a good system of dealing with her. Her behaviour can be very bad and it seems like only the school is re3ally able to manage her and this is because they have a lot of help. We do have help in the home and also have a aid to help with her still we have had some very difficult moments and know not what to do when she has a tantrum. Are there any other fp who handle this population?
