Biodiesel operates in conventional engines.
Just like petroleum diesel, biodiesel operates in combustion-ignition engines. Essentially no engine modifications are required, and biodiesel maintains the payload capacity and range of diesel. Pure biodiesel is not compatible with natural rubber, sometimes found in pre-1994 vehicles. Because it is a solvent, it can degrade natural rubber hoses and gaskets. This is not a problem with B20 blends (20 percent biodiesel/80 percent diesel) and below.

Biodiesel does not require special storage. In fact, in its pure form or in blends, biodiesel can be stored wherever petroleum diesel is stored, except in concrete-lined tanks. It handles like diesel and uses the same infrastructure for transport, storage and use. At higher blend levels, biodiesel may deteriorate natural rubber or polyurethane foam materials. Biodiesel exhaust is less offensive.

This is what the Global Emergency Alert Response campaign is all about. We invite students/activists to help by learning and sharing information about the nature and scope of the problems and solutions associated with this multi-faceted global crisis.
Most people understand that the combined effects of deforestation and fossil fuel combustion now imperil the Earth with global warming induced catastrophic climate changes evidenced by the recent devastating storms like Hurricane Mitch and the February tornados that left US cities looking like they were bombed out. What most people are still unaware of is that there are solutions to global warming that have been kept from public attention by government secrecy policies, disinformation, and the corporate controlled media information censorship.
While the scientists paid by the fossil fuel industry still claim that global warming is no big deal, others feel that it may already be too late to save life on Earth. Not only is the greenhouse effect of excess carbon dioxide contributing to the problem, but so also is the critically depleting ozone layer which threatens all the phytoplankton in the oceans with total destruction over the next ten years from increasing solar irradiation. These one-celled plants provide over half of Earth's oxygen production and if we lose them, Earth may wind up looking like Mars.

Human beings (like all other animals) draw their energy from the food they eat. Until the last century, all of the food energy available on this planet was derived from the sun through photosynthesis. Either you ate plants or you ate animals that fed on plants, but the energy in your food was ultimately derived from the sun. It would have been absurd to think that we would one day run out of sunshine. No, sunshine was an abundant, renewable resource, and the process of photosynthesis fed all life on this planet. It also set a limit on the amount of food that could be generated at any one time, and therefore placed a limit upon population growth. Solar energy has a limited rate of flow into this planet. To increase your food production, you had to increase the acreage under cultivation, and displace your competitors. There was no other way to increase the amount of energy available for food production. Human population grew by displacing everything else and appropriating more and more of the available solar energy. Just when agricultural output could expand no more by increasing acreage, new innovations made possible a more thorough exploitation of the acreage already available. The process of “pest” displacement and appropriation for agriculture accelerated with the industrial revolution as the mechanization of agriculture hastened the clearing and tilling of land and augmented the amount of farmland which could be tended by one person. With every increase in food production, the human population grew apace.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW what's happening on the planet, don't look to the op-ed page of the New York Times. Not that the Times has done a poor job on reporting on global warming. But nearly every week its op-ed page carries a new quarter-page ad from Mobil contending that the facts are not yet in on global climate change. A November 6 ad by the oil giant, for example, told readers "other variables could be much more important in the climate system than emissions produced by man." The same ad cited a statement by the lead author of a report by a UN panel of 2,500 scientists about the "'uncertainty' inherent in computer climate modeling."
GLOBAL WARMING: THE FUTURE IS NOW
FOR 10,000 YEARS, the earth's climate has been moderated by the heat-trapping effects of 280 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide, the primary "greenhouse gas" released by fossil fuel burning. Since the beginning of this century, that concentration has been increasing (it is now 360 ppm) and it is projected to double in the next century. Among the consequences of that increase are changes in drought and precipitation patterns, accompanied by storms of increasing strength. Today a significantly higher proportion of rain and snow is coming in intense, severe downpours than 20 years ago.

Fossil fuel best for 2 billion poor?
An article on the Science Blog outlines a claim by a researcher at the University of California at Berkeley that using fossil fuels for household use (cooking, etc.) may actually be the best environmental option. ...in an editorial appearing this week in the journal Science, [Kirk R.] Smith [professor and chair of environmental health sciences at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health] argues that switching all 2 billion of the world's poor to liquefied petroleum gas for household use would add a scant 2 percent to the global greenhouse gas emissions of fossil fuels. At the same time, using gas fuel would decrease the environmental impact on local biomass resources.

Around 2025, give or take a decade, humans will have consumed half of all conventional oil resources that ever existed on Earth. With the rest increasingly hard to pump, production will begin to decline, leaving us vulnerable to a global economic crisis as oil supplies tighten and prices climb. We should develop other energy sources now, while we still have abundant fossil fuels to do it. Which energy sources are to replace fossil fuels? We should take a cue from U.S. insurance companies and drop nuclear power. Insurers have never been willing to fully cover the potential liabilities of reactors' huge risks. The nuclear industry would not exist except for repeated congressional acts since 1959 limiting commercial liability for accidents and sabotage. Claims of safer designs are irrelevant as long as the industry refuses to operate without a liability limit. Another energy source is fusion, which powers our sun, but engineering difficulties indicate this is at least half a century from being commercially viable. And although predicted to be safer than nuclear fission, it will still have huge risks that require unacceptable liability limits.

Experts Eye Nuclear Power for Producing Hydrogen Fuel It's no quick route, though fast becoming a yellowbrick road to an energy wonderland. From Iceland to Japan, hydrogen for power through fuel cells for automobiles, pipelines for industries, and generating stations for electricity is enticing visions of new "clean and green" technologies down the line. At the IAEA's Scientific Forum 16 September, energy experts took stock of the rising hydrogen economy, including the fuel's future production by advanced "next generation" nuclear power plants. One big issue is how best to produce enough hydrogen affordably, and fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear power are all in the running as options. The reason is that making hydrogen takes energy, lots of it. Though the most plentiful gas on earth, hydrogen rarely exists by itself. Instead it binds with other elements, like it does with oxygen to form water molecules. Hydrogen's attraction is clear it has the highest energy content of any known fuel and when it's burned, the "waste" is water, with no carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide as unwanted byproducts. Growing Market in Industries Today most commercial hydrogen is produced from water using a process called electrolysis. Research is heavily focused on other methods, including advanced systems producing very hot heat and steam.
