Tires, Fires, Fuel and Air Quality
Tires and Fire
In general, burning tires can be evaluated as controlled and uncontrolled burning. Controlled burning is where tires or other solid wastes are used as a fuel supplement in a properly designed combustion device, such as a boiler or kiln, with appropriate air pollution controls, monitoring and reporting required. Energy recovery from the combustion of tires is performed under controlled conditions. According to the EPA, properly controlled combustion of tires appears to produce air emissions similar to some traditional fossil fuels, such as coal and coke. Open, uncontrolled tire fires are difficult to extinguish and can release large amounts of crude oil and other toxins into our air, soil, and groundwater resources. Across the nation, many states have been faced with large, uncontrolled fires in tire piles that have taken months or years to extinguish. Controlling the pollutants from these fires is difficult and finding an effective way of putting the fires out is even more difficult. Currently, Montana does not allow open burning of tires but inadvertent or accidental fires are possible. Montana has fortunately avoided the large, abandoned tire piles that are common in some states. Because tire piles are a fire hazard and because there is a significant national problem with abandoned and stockpiled tires, many states have implemented diverse (and often expensive) programs to permanently eliminate those tires in an effort to decrease the potential for more open and uncontrolled tire fires.

Environmental Concerns Energy - Fossil Fuels Take Action
Actually using them poses another problem altogether! By burning fossil fuels, harmful greenhouse gases are continuously released into the atmosphere. It has become the dominant belief that these gases destabilize current atmospheric conditions and in turn adversely effect climate and weather patterns across the globe. The result is the devastating condition of climate change called global warming . An increase in droughts, floods, and mean global sea level are the likely result. Moreover, such weather anomalies will no doubt affect the human population, as millions (particularly those in developing nations) will be forced to deal with an increasingly harsh environment. hundreds of millions of tons of pollution into the air. This pollution contributes to acid rain and smog as well as to global warming.
Take Action There are a number of steps you can take to help promote clean, renewable energy. One way is to contact your representatives in Washington, DC. Encourage them to introduce and support provisions that would encourage energy efficiency. Ask your Senators and Representative to support legislation that:
  • Addresses the dangers of global warming and sets limits on the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.

Fossil Fuel in General About Fossil Fuel Overview:
After food, fossil fuel is humanity's most important source of energy. There are three major fuels coal, oil and natural gas. Coal is used primarily to produce electricity. It therefore provides us with light, motive power from electric motors, and our many electronic devices. Oil gives us our mobility, our cars, planes, trains, trucks and boats. Natural gas is used primarily to produce heat, for our buildings, hot water, and industrial processes. Hydrogen and Other Clean Fuels
"Hydrogen can be produced from domestic sources initially natural gas; eventually clean coal....That's important. If you can produce something yourself, it means you're less dependant upon somebody else to produce it. " President George W. Bush
February 6, 2003 In his 2003 State of the Union address, President Bush announced a $1.2 billion initiative to reverse America's growing dependence on foreign oil by developing the technology for commercially viable hydrogen-powered fuel cells to power cars, trucks, homes and businesses with no pollution or greenhouse gases.
"Tonight I am proposing $1.2 billion in research funding so that America can lead the world in developing clean, hydrogen-power automobiles."
A key element of the President's hydrogen initiative is to develop advanced hydrogen production and delivery technologies that can supply tomorrow's energy and transportation systems with affordable hydrogen with significantly reduced or near-zero emissions. Fossil fuels (e.g., natural gas and coal) can provide the transition to a hydrogen economy by delivering a near- to mid-term source of hydrogen. With carbon sequestration , coal could be used to produce hydrogen for many decades without adding to concerns over the buildup of carbon gases in the atmosphere.

Hydrogen's Dirty Secret
President Bush promises that fuel-cell cars will be free of pollution. But if he has his way, the cars of tomorrow will run on hydrogen made from fossil fuels. By Barry C. Lynn May/June 2003 Issue
E-mail article

Print article
When President Bush unveiled his plans for a hydrogen-powered car in his State of the Union address in January, he proposed $1.2 billion in spending to develop a revolutionary automobile that will be "pollution-free." The new vehicle, he declared, will rely on "a simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen" to power a car "producing only water, not exhaust fumes." Within 20 years, the president vowed, fuel-cell cars will "make our air significantly cleaner, and our country much less dependent on foreign sources of oil." Such a system, experts say, would effectively eliminate most of the benefits offered by hydrogen. Although the fuel-cell cars themselves may emit nothing but water vapor, the process of producing the fuel cells from hydrocarbons will continue America's dependence on fossil fuels and leave behind carbon dioxide, the primary cause of global warming.

America has more coal than any other fossil fuel resource. The United States also has more coal reserves than any other single country in the world. In fact, 1/4 of of all the known coal in the world is in the United States. The United States has more coal that can be mined than the rest of the world has oil that can be pumped from the ground. Large coal deposits can be found in 38 of the 50 states. Coal is used primarily in the United States to generate electricity. In fact, it is burned in power plants to produce more than half of the electricity we use. If your family uses an electric stove, you use about half a ton of coal a year. If your water heater is electric, you are using about two tons of coal a year. If you have an electric refrigerator, that's another half-ton a year. Even though you may never see coal, you use several tons of it every year! The material that formed fossil fuels varied greatly over time as each layer was buried. [Read more about

Hybrid Vehicles Provide the Best of Both Worlds
Take an interactive tour of the EP System. For more information about GM's hybrid technologies, see There are many ways to configure a hybrid drive system. In some hybrids, the batteries power electric motors, which drive all four wheels. In others, the engine may drive the rear wheels while the batteries power the electric motors, running the front wheels. In others, the batteries or another electrical source act as auxiliary power. Hybrid power systems have been developed to address the shortcomings of powertrains based solely on internal combustion or electricity. Gasoline and diesel engines cannot run without fossil fuels, and the combustion of those fuels produces emissions. Vehicles powered by electricity alone are expensive, have very limited range and must rely on heavy batteries for power storage.

http://www.generalbiomass.com/whybio1.htm
Why Biomass? Biomass recycles carbon from the air and spares the use of fossil fuels, reducing the need to pump additional fossil carbon from the ground into the atmosphere. Biomass comes from green plants which actively absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and convert it into sugars, which are then stored in long molecules like cellulose. Eventually this plant carbon is returned to the atmosphere by natural decay processes, including the breakdown of cellulose. We can intervene in this process by breaking down cellulose to glucose in biomass processing plants, then converting the sugars to ethanol, which is a substitute for gasoline. Using ethanol made from biomass sugars reduces the need for fossil fuels like gasoline. Ethanol can also be used to power fuel cells, and is easier to store and distribute than gaseous hydrogen. Biomass can also be burned to produce electricity, or gasified to produce a non-fossil substitute for natural gas. Biomass is an abundant and underutilized resource which remains to be effectively used on a commercial and societal scale. Plants produce an estimated 1 trillion metric tons of cellulose every year. Using even a fraction of this for fuel ethanol and biogas could begin to reduce our yearly addition of more fossil carbon to the atmosphere, and provide additional domestic energy supplies and jobs. Worldwide, the use of biomass could provide social and economic benefits to many countries and reduce their dependence on imported oil, while lowering their emissions of CO2 from fossil carbon.

Old coal fired power stations produce more dangerous than gas ones. In the 1990s, our emissions fell as electricity companies switched from coal to gas . Recently this trend has reversed as gas prices have risen making coal more economic. Did you know?
