FORTRAN PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT FEATURES
The pages linked to here are an attempt to compare compilers on various platforms available at LLNL in order to make it easier for the user to answer questions like:
  • I used option x with compiler ywhat do I use to get the same effect with compiler z?
  • If I use a particular language feature, will it be available on all of the platforms that I am interested in?
Basic information about recommended Fortran compiler options to use for codes at LLNL is available for the following compilers: NOTE: These pages are not an attempt to fully explain features or how to use them. The syntax, where given, is not necessarily formal or complete, although hopefully what is presented is accurate. Please refer to the appropriate man pages, user's guides, and reference guides for details. The intent is to link to the more detailed documentation as the appropriate links are found and time permits. In the meantime, hopefully this material will help aim users in the right directions. The languages and compilers currently compared here are the following:

Fortran
Fortran (also FORTRAN ) is a programming language originally developed in the and still in use today. The name is short for "Formula Translation". Early versions of the language were known as FORTRAN, but the capitalization has been dropped in newer revisions beginning with Fortran 90. The official language standards now refer to the language as "Fortran". Fortran is mainly used for scientific computing and numerical analysis . Although originally a procedural language, recent versions of Fortran have included some features to support object-oriented programming The first FORTRAN compiler was developed for the IBM 704 in by an IBM team led by John W. Backus . This was an optimizing compiler, because the authors reasoned that no one would use the language if its performance was not comparable to assembly language The language was widely adopted by scientists for writing numerically intensive programs, which encouraged compiler writers to produce compilers that generate faster code. The inclusion of a complex number data type in the language made Fortran especially suited to scientific computation. There are many vendors of high performance Fortran compilers today. Many advances in the theory and design of

Please council it when you plan to rewrite the article entirely. - A programming language or computer language is a standardized communication technique for expressing instructions to a computer. It is a set of syntactic and semantic rules used to define computer programs. A language enables a programmer to precisely specify what data a computer will act upon, how these data will be stored/transmitted, and precisely what actions to take under various circumstances.

Description FOR mula TRAN slation. FORTRAN was developed in the 1950-s by a team of IBM programmers and released in 1957. It is a language special developed to let the computer execute number crunching operations. It was the first high level language, one in which the programmer did not have to directly deal with assembler or machine code (0's and 1's). It was the first language to be widely used and it is the oldest language still widely used today. It was designed to express scientific and mathematical formulas and it is still used in that area. A simple example of FORTRAN IV (this is one of my firsts programs, written in FORTRAN IV for an IBM1130 using 8Kb memory in 1973): // JOB
// FOR
* ONE WORD INTEGERS
* IOCS(DISK,TYPEWRITER,KEYBOARD,PAPERTAPE)

21: Running C and Fortran Together 20: Running Fortran Compiling Fortran
When running programs on a shared computer, or on a cluster of computers, it is important to be aware of how your program consumes resources. As your program consumes more and more resources, you affect other users more and more. If you are working with large arrays which occupy a large fraction of the computer's RAM , or if your program takes more than a few minutes to run, you probably are affecting other users. In the Physics Department, the machines goophy, daphy, and hermes each has more than 32 Meg of RAM. But be aware, the highest priority for the departmental cluster is class use. If you need to run a large research program on the cluster, you should give it low priority and have it run between 10 pm and 8 am. If you run a large job on the cluster during class time, the system administrators have been instructed to kill them. To run your program at a lower priority, use the nice command. To use it, enter nice followed by the command you want nice ed . For example, to be nice when you run the program
